Chapter 5 - THE ECHO IN THE LIBRARY

The click of the gun’s hammer echoing in the silent library sounded like a thunderclap.

I screamed, throwing my arms around Ben's waist, trying to pull him out of the line of fire. But Ben was immovable, his broad shoulders squared entirely between Vanessa’s weapon and my body.

“Vanessa, please!” I begged, my voice breaking. “You took our home. You have the journal. Just let us walk away. We won't tell anyone!”

Vanessa’s perfect lips curled into a cruel, mocking smile.

“Walk away?” she laughed, the sound cold and hollow. “Sweetheart, you're the last loose end. I spent ten years pretending to mourn your sister just so I could manipulate Luca into this engagement. I'm not going to let a maid and a grease monkey ruin my wedding.”

Daniel, the head of security, stepped forward, his own tactical flashlight pinning us like deer in headlights.

“Make it quick, Mrs. Bellini,” Daniel said, his voice flat. “Mr. Moretti is dealing with the caterers in the East Wing, but he’ll be looking for her soon.”

My stomach bottomed out. Daniel, the man trusted to protect Luca’s life, was on Vanessa’s payroll. The betrayal ran deeper than I could have ever imagined.

Vanessa leveled the pistol directly at Ben’s heart.

“Goodbye, Ben,” she whispered.

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the gunshot.

But the shot that rang out didn't come from Vanessa’s gun.

A deafening BANG shattered the silence, echoing violently off the high ceilings of the library.

Vanessa screamed, dropping her pistol as her wrist exploded in a spray of red. The heavy gun clattered onto the hardwood floor, sliding across the dust.

Daniel spun around, raising his weapon toward the dark hallway.

Before he could even acquire a target, a second shot rang out. Daniel cried out in pain, his knee buckling as a bullet tore through his leg, sending him crashing to the ground.

Ben and I dropped to the floor, terrified and confused.

From the shadows of the hallway, a figure stepped into the dim light of the library.

It was Luca Moretti.

He held a sleek black handgun, smoke curling lazily from the barrel. His tailored three-piece suit was perfectly crisp, but his dark eyes burned with a terrifying, absolute fury.

He didn't look at Daniel bleeding on the floor. He didn't look at Vanessa clutching her ruined wrist.

He looked directly at me.

“Are you hurt, Hannah?” Luca asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.

“N-no,” I stammered, clinging to Ben. “We’re okay.”

Luca’s expression didn't soften, but the slight relaxation in his broad shoulders told me how terrified he had been.

Vanessa sobbed loudly, falling to her knees and cradling her bleeding arm. “Luca! Luca, he was going to attack me! The mechanic broke into the house, I was just defending myself!”

Luca slowly walked into the room, his heavy footsteps echoing on the dusty floorboards. He stopped in front of his fiancée and looked down at her with absolute disgust.

“You think I am blind, Vanessa?” Luca asked quietly.

He reached into his tailored pocket and pulled out a small, ornate silver lighter.

It was the exact same lighter Ben and I had found in the wreckage of our apartment.

Vanessa’s sobbing abruptly stopped. Her face drained of color as she stared at the lighter in Luca's hand.

“My men intercepted the thugs you sent to destroy Hannah's apartment two hours ago,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “They confessed everything. They said you paid them to ruin her home, and then ordered them to plant this lighter to ensure Hannah knew exactly who did it.”

Vanessa swallowed hard, her eyes darting frantically toward the door.

“You wanted her desperate,” Luca continued, kneeling down so he was eye-level with the woman he was supposed to marry in a week. “You wanted her to come back here tonight. Because you knew I gave her the brass key.”

I stared at Luca in shock. He had known. He had orchestrated this entire night.

“Why, Luca?” Vanessa cried, her facade completely shattering. “Why give her the key? She's just a maid!”

“She is Elena’s sister,” Luca roared, the sudden explosion of anger making everyone in the room flinch.

He stood up, towering over Vanessa.

“Ten years ago, you poisoned the only woman I ever loved,” Luca said, his voice trembling with a decade of suppressed grief. “You staged her death to look like a heart attack. You thought you buried her secret with her.”

He looked toward the mahogany desk, at the leather-bound journal Ben and I had found.

“But Elena was smarter than you,” Luca said. “She hid her journal. And she left me a letter in my safe, telling me she had a sister in the foster system. She made me swear to find her and protect her from you.”

Tears streamed down my face. My sister, a woman I had never even met, had used her dying breath to ensure I would be safe.

“It took me eight years to find Hannah,” Luca said softly, looking at me. “She was married. She was happy. So I brought her here, where I could keep an eye on her, keep her safe, while I gathered the final proof I needed to destroy your family, Vanessa.”

Vanessa let out a bitter, desperate laugh. “You can't destroy my family, Luca! The Bellinis control the shipping ports! If you kill me, my father will wage a war that will burn this city to the ground!”

Luca didn't flinch.

“Your father is already dead, Vanessa.”

The silence in the library was deafening.

Vanessa stared at him, her mouth opening and closing without any sound coming out.

“While you were busy playing landlord and destroying a mechanic's apartment tonight,” Luca stated coldly, “my men raided the Bellini shipping yards. The stolen money was recovered. Your father resisted. He didn't survive.”

Vanessa screamed—a raw, guttural sound of pure agony. She lunged for the pistol on the floor with her good hand.

But before she could reach it, a massive hand clamped down on her shoulder, pinning her to the ground.

It was Marco, Luca’s loyal second-in-command, stepping into the room with four heavily armed guards.

“Take her to the cellar,” Luca ordered, turning his back on his screaming fiancée. “And call a doctor for Daniel before you throw him in there with her.”

Marco nodded, dragging the hysterical Vanessa and the bleeding security chief out of the library.

The heavy double doors closed, leaving Ben, Luca, and me alone in the dusty room.

Luca took a deep breath, holstering his weapon. The terrifying mafia boss disappeared, replaced by a man who looked incredibly tired.

He walked over to the desk and gently picked up the silver picture frame containing the photo of him and Elena.

“I’m sorry, Hannah,” Luca said softly, tracing the glass over my sister's face. “I never wanted you to find out like this. I wanted to tell you everything on my own terms. But when Vanessa moved up her timeline and destroyed your apartment tonight, I had to force her hand.”

Ben stood up, helping me to my feet. He looked at Luca, his protective arm wrapped tightly around my waist.

“You used my wife as bait,” Ben said, his voice tight with anger.

Luca looked at Ben. He didn't deny it.

“I knew Vanessa wouldn't pass up the chance to eliminate the last connection to Elena if she thought Hannah was vulnerable,” Luca admitted. “But I swear to you, Ben. I would have burned this entire mansion to the ground before I let a single bullet touch her.”

Ben stared at him, the tension between the two men thick and heavy.

Before Ben could reply, Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, thick envelope. He tossed it onto the desk.

“There is fifty thousand dollars in cash in that envelope,” Luca said quietly. “There is also a deed to a small house in the suburbs. It's clean. Untraceable. The Bellinis are gone, but my world is still dangerous. Take the money, Ben. Take Hannah. Start your family. And never look back.”

I stared at the envelope. It was more money than Ben and I had ever seen in our lives. It was safety. It was freedom.

Ben looked at the envelope, then at me.

He reached out and picked it up.

But he didn't put it in his pocket.

Ben tossed the envelope right back onto the dusty mahogany desk.

“Keep your money, Mr. Moretti,” Ben said firmly.

Luca frowned, confused. “Ben, your apartment is destroyed. You have nothing.”

“I have my wife,” Ben replied, his hand squeezing mine. “And I can provide for her myself.”

Ben looked at the leather journal sitting on the desk.

“But there is one thing we are taking with us,” Ben said.

He reached out and picked up Elena’s diary. He held it out to me.

“Take it, Hannah,” Ben whispered softly. “She’s your family. You deserve to know her.”

I took the journal, holding it tightly against my chest, tears blurring my vision.

Luca watched us, a deep, profound respect settling in his dark eyes. He nodded slowly.

“Marco has a car waiting for you at the front gates,” Luca said. “He will take you to a safe hotel for the night. Tomorrow, you can go anywhere you want.”

We turned to leave the library.

But as we reached the double doors, a sudden, frantic ringing echoed from the hallway.

It was the mansion’s emergency landline, a phone that only rang if there was a catastrophic security breach on the perimeter.

Luca answered it quickly, his face draining of color as he listened.

He hung up the phone and looked at me, his eyes wide with a terror I had never seen in him before.

“Hannah,” Luca said, drawing his weapon again. “The men who raided your apartment... they didn't just smash your TV.”

My heart stopped. “What did they do?”

May you like

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“They found the ultrasound picture hidden in your bedside drawer.”
