Chapter 8 - The Tarmac Standoff

The roar of the jet engines faded into white noise, drowned out by the frantic pounding of my own heart.
I stood frozen near the open door of our SUV, watching the nightmare unfold under the harsh glare of the tarmac lights.
Vanessa held Noah tightly against her side. The ten-year-old boy was pale, his eyes wide with a quiet, terrified understanding. He didn't cry. He didn't struggle. He just stared at his father.
Luca stood ten feet away, his weapon aimed directly at Vanessa's head. His hands, usually so steady, were trembling slightly with suppressed, violent rage.
"Let him go, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal it barely sounded human. "I know the truth. I know you're a Moretti."
Vanessa’s cruel smile widened. "I figured you would eventually open the old man's safe. He was so paranoid, keeping those letters. He couldn't bear to destroy the only proof that he loved my mother more than yours."
"He didn't love her," Luca spat, keeping his gun perfectly leveled. "He used her. And when Marco suspected, my father abandoned her to save his own skin."
"Lies!" Vanessa shrieked, her composure cracking for a fraction of a second. She pressed the barrel harder against Noah’s temple. Noah flinched, closing his eyes.
"Don't hurt him!" I yelled, stepping forward instinctively, unable to watch the boy I cared for be used as a shield.
"Shut up, maid!" Vanessa snapped, glaring at me. "Take one more step, and I'll drop him right here!"
Luca shot me a warning look, silently commanding me to stay back. He turned his focus entirely back to Vanessa.
"Where is Elena?" Luca demanded. "If you hurt her..."
"Relax, Romeo," Vanessa scoffed. "Elena is locked in a maintenance shed a mile down the road, tied to a chair. I didn't need her. I only need the boy."
"Victor couldn't finish the job," Luca deduced, realizing how Vanessa ended up here. "He failed at the house, he failed in the cellar, so you killed Marco, took his resources, and ambushed my security chief yourself."
"Victor was a sloppy, washed-up relic," Vanessa sneered. "When he called to tell me Elena shot him in the cellar, I realized I had to do it myself. I intercepted Marco's car on the access road. Marco trusted me. He rolled the window down. Two bullets to the chest, nice and clean."
She looked down at Noah, her eyes devoid of any familial warmth. "Then I drove the decoy car here, knowing you'd follow the tracker, knowing you'd be desperate."
"What do you want, Vanessa?" Luca asked, his voice steadying, entering the cold, calculating mindset of a negotiator. "You want the syndicate? It's yours. Take it. Let the boy walk to me, and you can have Chicago."
Vanessa laughed—a high, bitter sound that echoed over the tarmac.
"You think I want Chicago?" she mocked. "I just murdered the head of the Bellini family and the head of your security. Half the city will be hunting me by sunrise. I can't stay here."
She gestured with her chin toward the idling Gulfstream jet behind her.
"I want the plane, Luca," Vanessa demanded. "Fully fueled, cleared for international takeoff. And I want the three hundred thousand dollars you packed in that duffel bag."
"You have it," Luca agreed instantly, not lowering his weapon. "Take the plane. Take the money. Leave the boy."
"I'm not stupid, brother," Vanessa smirked, the word 'brother' dripping with venom. "If I leave him here, you'll order your men to shoot this plane out of the sky before I even clear the city limits. The boy comes with me. Once I land in Europe and secure my new identity, I'll let him go."
"No," Luca roared, taking a step forward. "He doesn't get on that plane."
"Take another step, and I'll scramble his brains right now!" Vanessa screamed, her finger tightening on the trigger.
Noah let out a small, terrified whimper. "D-d-dad."
The sound of his son's voice broke the last thread of Luca's restraint. The mafia boss, the master tactician, vanished, leaving only a desperate father willing to trade everything for his child's life.
Luca slowly lowered his gun. He placed it gently on the tarmac and kicked it away.
He held his empty hands up in surrender.
"Take me," Luca offered softly, his eyes locked on Vanessa.
Vanessa frowned, confusion flickering across her features. "What?"
"Take me as your hostage," Luca said, his voice completely calm, devoid of any trickery. "I am the head of the Moretti family. I am a much more valuable shield than a ten-year-old boy. The Commission won't shoot down a plane if their boss is on it. They would risk a boy, but they won't risk me."
Vanessa stared at him, weighing the options. She knew he was right. Noah was leverage against Luca, but Luca was leverage against the entire Chicago underworld.
"If I go with you," Luca continued, stepping slowly toward her, "you have guaranteed safe passage anywhere in the world. When you land, you disappear, and I walk away. But you have to let Noah go. Right now."
Vanessa looked at Noah, then at the empty tarmac, and finally at Luca.
"Fine," Vanessa agreed, a cruel smile returning to her lips. "Kick the gun further away. Hands behind your head."
Luca did exactly as he was told. He kicked his pistol twenty feet away, intertwining his fingers behind his head, and walked slowly toward her.
"Dad, no!" Noah cried, struggling against Vanessa's grip.
"It's okay, buddy," Luca smiled reassuringly, his eyes never leaving his son. "I'm going to take a little trip. You go with Rachel. She’s going to take you to Mom."
When Luca was five feet away, Vanessa violently shoved Noah forward.
Noah stumbled, falling onto the hard tarmac, scraping his knees. I didn't wait. I sprinted forward, ignoring Vanessa’s gun, and scooped Noah into my arms, dragging him back toward the safety of our armored SUV.
"I've got you," I whispered fiercely, pressing his face into my shoulder as he sobbed for his father.
Vanessa immediately grabbed Luca’s arm, pressing her pistol hard into his spine.
"Move," she ordered, shoving him toward the boarding stairs of the jet.
Luca didn't fight her. He walked up the stairs, his hands still behind his head. He paused at the door of the cabin, looking back at me and Noah one last time.
His dark eyes met mine. It wasn't a look of defeat. It was a look of absolute, terrifying promise.
Keep him safe, his eyes said.
Then he stepped into the cabin, and Vanessa followed, pulling the heavy door shut behind them.
The engines of the Gulfstream whined to a deafening pitch. The plane began to taxi down the runway, picking up speed, preparing to disappear into the night sky with the most powerful man in Chicago as a hostage.
I held Noah tight, watching the plane accelerate.
"They're taking him," Noah cried, burying his face in my uniform apron. "Rachel, she’s going to kill him!"
"No, she isn't," a rough, familiar voice said from the shadows near the hangar.
I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat.
Stepping into the light, holding a heavy sniper rifle, was Silvio. The head of security wasn't downtown organizing a sweep. He was right here.
"Silvio!" I gasped. "Why didn't you shoot her? You had a clear shot!"
Silvio didn't lower his rifle. He watched the jet lift off the runway, banking sharply into the dark clouds.
"Because the boss ordered me not to," Silvio said, a grim, terrifying smile touching his lips.
I stared at him in utter confusion. "He ordered you to let her take him?"
"He ordered me to let her take the plane," Silvio corrected softly.
He reached into his tactical vest and pulled out a small, black electronic device. It wasn't a radio. It was a detonator.
"Vanessa thought she was stealing a getaway vehicle," Silvio said, his thumb hovering over the red button. "She didn't realize she was stepping into a coffin."
My blood ran cold. "Luca is on that plane!"
"I know," Silvio said, his eyes reflecting the flashing lights of the runway. "The boss knew she would demand the jet. He had me rig it with C4 three hours ago."
Silvio looked at me, a profound, agonizing sorrow in his eyes.

"He never intended to come back from this flight, Rachel," Silvio whispered. "He's ending the bloodline. All of it."
Silvio pressed the button.
