Chapter 10 - The Falling Sky

The luxurious cabin of the Gulfstream jet felt smaller than a coffin.
Vanessa sat paralyzed in the plush leather armchair, her knuckles white around her suppressed pistol. The realization that she had walked blindly into a meticulously crafted trap shattered her arrogant facade, leaving only raw, desperate panic.
Marco, the security chief she thought she had murdered, stood six feet behind her, his weapon leveled perfectly at the base of her skull.
"Drop the gun, Vanessa," Marco ordered, his voice devoid of any warmth. "Slowly. Use two fingers."
Vanessa didn't move. She stared at Luca, sitting calmly across from her, his dark eyes radiating a terrifying, absolute authority.
"You planned this," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling. "You knew I’d take the plane."
"You’re predictable, sister," Luca said softly, the word 'sister' dripping with venom. "You crave control. The moment you realized you couldn't control me or Noah, you tried to clear the board. A private jet is the ultimate escape for a coward."
"I'm not a coward!" Vanessa shrieked, her panic spiking into hysteria. She swung her gun wildly toward Marco, abandoning her aim on Luca.
It was a fatal miscalculation.
Before Vanessa could even pull the trigger, Luca moved with terrifying, blinding speed. The relaxed posture had been a coil waiting to spring.
He lunged across the small space between the armchairs, grabbing Vanessa's wrist with one hand and driving his other palm hard against her throat, pinning her violently against the leather seat.
Vanessa gasped for air, thrashing wildly, but Luca’s grip was iron. He twisted her wrist sharply, forcing a sharp cry from her lips as the suppressed pistol clattered harmlessly onto the carpeted floor.
Marco immediately stepped forward, kicking the gun out of reach and pressing the barrel of his own weapon against Vanessa's temple.
"Don't move," Marco growled.
Luca released her throat, stepping back and straightening his suit jacket as if he had merely swatted a fly. He looked down at the woman who had terrorized his son and ordered a hit on his ex-wife.
"Bind her," Luca commanded softly.
Marco produced a pair of heavy-duty zip-ties from his tactical vest, expertly securing Vanessa’s hands behind her back, ignoring her desperate, choked sobs.
"What are you going to do to me?" Vanessa cried, tears streaking her flawless makeup. "If you kill me, the Commission will demand answers! I am a Bellini!"
"You're a bastard Moretti," Luca corrected coldly, picking up her discarded pistol and checking the chamber. "And the Commission answers to me. But I'm not going to kill you, Vanessa. Death is too easy for someone who tried to murder a ten-year-old boy."
He looked at Marco. "Is the cabin soundproof?"
"Fully, boss," Marco confirmed.
"Good." Luca turned back to Vanessa. "Because you're going to tell me exactly who else was involved in the hit on Elena ten years ago. Victor didn't act alone. You didn't act alone. I want names, Vanessa. Every single captain, every single politician on your father's payroll who turned a blind eye."
Vanessa sneered, a defiant spark returning to her eyes despite her bound wrists. "Go to hell, Luca. I'll never give you my contacts."
Luca smiled—a dark, chilling expression that made Marco instinctively take a step back.
"I think you will," Luca said softly. He gestured toward the small, round window of the jet. "Marco, open the emergency door."
Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer terror. "What? We’re at thirty thousand feet! The cabin will depressurize! We’ll die!"
"Marco and I have oxygen masks in the cockpit," Luca lied smoothly, his face a mask of absolute calm. "You do not. We’re over the Atlantic now. When he opens that door, the suction will be violent. It will be incredibly cold. And you will be the only one struggling to breathe."
He leaned closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "You have thirty seconds to start talking, Vanessa. Before I let you experience exactly what it feels like to be completely powerless."
Vanessa stared at him, searching for a bluff. She found none. The ruthless syndicate boss she had underestimated was staring back at her, entirely willing to let her suffocate to protect his family.
"Wait!" Vanessa shrieked as Marco reached for the heavy red handle of the emergency exit. "Wait! I'll tell you!"
For the next two hours, high above the clouds, Vanessa Bellini sang. She detailed every offshore account, every corrupted judge, and every disloyal captain within the Chicago syndicate who had secretly backed her father's bid for power. Luca recorded every word on his encrypted phone, building a dossier that would purge his empire of traitors in a single, devastating sweep.
When she finally finished, hoarse and trembling, Luca put the phone away.
"Turn the plane around, Marco," Luca ordered, his voice returning to its normal, composed cadence. "Take us back to Chicago. Land at the private Bellini airstrip on the North Side. The feds won't be watching that one."
"Yes, boss," Marco nodded, retreating to the cockpit.
Vanessa looked up at Luca, exhausted and defeated. "What happens to me now?"
"You're going to federal prison," Luca said simply. "I'm handing this recording, along with the evidence of your father's crimes, directly to the FBI. You’ll be indicted on RICO charges. You’ll spend the rest of your life in a concrete box, Vanessa. And every day, you’ll remember that a ten-year-old boy you deemed 'unworthy' is the one who holds your empire."
The flight back was silent.
When the Gulfstream finally touched down on the dark, secluded runway of the Bellini airstrip, the sun was just beginning to rise, painting the Chicago skyline in hues of pale pink and gold.
Silvio and a team of loyal Moretti guards were waiting on the tarmac, heavily armed and vigilant.
Luca escorted a bound, silent Vanessa down the boarding stairs. He handed her over to Silvio without a word.
"The FBI is en route to the designated drop point, boss," Silvio reported quietly. "They’re expecting the package."
"Make sure she gets there in one piece," Luca said, watching Vanessa being shoved into the back of an armored SUV.
He didn't wait to see her drive away. He turned to Marco.
"Take me to my son."
Forty-five minutes later, we were all gathered in the sprawling, sunlit living room of the downtown safe house.
I was sitting on the plush sofa, exhausted but unable to sleep, holding a mug of tea. Elena was curled up in an armchair, watching Noah sleep peacefully on the large sectional couch, wrapped in a thick blanket.
The heavy front door opened quietly.
Luca walked in.
He looked battered, his suit wrinkled, dark circles under his eyes, but he was alive. The oppressive, lethal aura that usually surrounded him was completely gone, replaced by a profound, overwhelming relief.
Elena stood up quickly, tears springing to her eyes. She didn't say a word. She crossed the room and threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder, sobbing quietly.
Luca held her tight, burying his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of the woman he had never truly stopped loving.
"I'm sorry, Elena," Luca whispered fiercely. "I'm so sorry I brought this danger to your door."
"You brought yourself back to us, Luca," Elena cried softly. "That's all that matters."
I watched them, a warm smile touching my lips. The mafia war was over. The traitors were purged. The family was finally safe.
Luca gently pulled away from Elena and walked over to the sectional couch. He knelt down beside his sleeping son, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from Noah's forehead.
Noah stirred, his eyes fluttering open. He blinked against the morning sunlight, focusing on his father's face.
"Dad?" Noah murmured, his voice thick with sleep.
"I'm right here, buddy," Luca smiled, tears filling his dark eyes.
Noah sat up quickly, throwing his small arms around Luca's neck, hugging him with a desperate, crushing strength. "You came back! You promised, and you came back!"
"I will always come back to you, Noah," Luca promised, holding his son tighter than he ever had before. "You are the most important person in my life. Nobody will ever make you feel otherwise again."
Noah pulled back slightly, wiping his eyes. He looked at me, sitting on the sofa, then back to his father.
"Dad?" Noah asked, his stutter completely gone in the safety of his father's arms. "C-can Rachel stay with us? I don't want her to go back to being just a maid."

Luca looked at me. His eyes were filled with a profound gratitude that transcended any salary or title.
"Rachel isn't going anywhere, buddy," Luca said softly, his gaze locked on mine. "She's family now."
