Chapter 2 - THE SILVER BABY RATTLE

The dining room descended into a suffocating, icy silence.

Twenty-four wealthy guests stared at the elderly man standing in the doorway.

Salvatore Bellini.

Head of the Chicago syndicate’s most ruthless faction.

A man whose tailored suits and polite smiles hid a legacy of bodies.

He leaned heavily on his gold-handled cane, his dark eyes locked entirely on Luca.

"Hello, son," he repeated, his voice smooth like polished glass.

Luca didn't flinch.

He didn't step back.

But I saw the muscles in his jaw tighten so hard I thought the bone might snap.

He slowly lowered the forged birth certificate to his side.

"Don't," Luca said, his voice dropping to a lethal, quiet register, "ever call me that."

Salvatore chuckled.

He stepped into the room, his cane tapping rhythmically against the marble floor.

Vanessa immediately backed away from him.

She wasn't looking at her father with respect.

She was looking at him with absolute, unadulterated terror.

Mrs. Carter stood behind Luca, her trembling hands clutching her black apron, the red zip-tie marks glaring against her fragile skin.

"It's the truth, Luca," Salvatore said, stopping at the end of the long dining table. "Eleanor Hayes was a beautiful woman. But she was naïve. She thought she could take my bloodline and disappear into the suburbs."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"If you're my father," he said, his voice laced with venom, "and Vanessa is your daughter..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't have to.

The horrifying realization rippled through the guests.

Gasps echoed across the room.

A woman near the window covered her mouth.

Luca had been engaged to his own half-sister.

Luca turned his head slowly toward Vanessa.

"You knew."

Tears streamed down her flawless, pale cheeks.

"Luca, I swear to God," she sobbed, "he forced me. He said if I didn't marry you and merge our family assets legally, he would kill my mother."

"Your mother?" Luca asked, his voice shaking with a rage I had never seen before. "You let me put a ring on your finger? You let me kiss you?"

"It was a business arrangement!" Salvatore interrupted, waving his free hand dismissively. "A necessary merger of two empires. Genetics are trivial when billions of dollars are at stake. You would have figured it out eventually, but by then, the ink on the contracts would have been dry."

Luca stepped forward, closing the distance between himself and the mob boss.

"You orchestrated this entire evening," Luca realized, his eyes burning. "You had Vanessa frame Mrs. Carter because you knew Mrs. Carter found out about Eleanor."

"Mrs. Carter," Salvatore sneered, glancing at the housekeeper, "is a glorified maid who doesn't know her place. She intercepted the woman who ruined my life thirty-nine years ago."

"Where is she?" Luca demanded.

"Eleanor?" Salvatore smiled. "The hospital, I assume. She always did have a weak heart. Especially when she's given the wrong medication."

The room went entirely still.

"What did you do to her?" Luca whispered.

"I simply made sure she wouldn't interrupt the wedding on Saturday," Salvatore said.

He reached into his tailored suit jacket.

Daniel, Luca's head of security, immediately drew his weapon.

"Hands where I can see them, Bellini!" Daniel shouted.

Salvatore ignored the gun.

He pulled out a small, tarnished object and tossed it onto the dining table.

It landed next to the crystal wineglasses with a heavy clatter.

I leaned forward.

It was a silver baby rattle.

Engraved with the initials L.A.M.

But it wasn't the silver that made my stomach drop.

May you like

It was the fresh, bright smear of crimson blood across the handle.

"Your mother held onto this for thirty-nine years," Salvatore said coldly. "But she won't be needing it anymore."
