Chapter 4 - THE PEARL NECKLACE

"Get down!" Luca roared.

He shoved me and Emily to the floor just as a deafening blast shattered the study doors. Wood splintered and rained down over us. The heavy oak doors blew open, hanging off their brass hinges.

Through the thick gray smoke, three men in dark suits stepped into the study.

They weren't Luca's security guards.

At the center of the men stood Anthony Bellini. He was a tall, imposing man with silver hair and a tailored coat. Beside him stood Vanessa. She wasn't crying anymore. She looked bored.

"I told you, Luca," Anthony said, his voice echoing in the ruined room. "You don't humiliate a Bellini and walk away."

Luca shielded me and Emily with his body, his pistol raised and aimed directly at Anthony's chest.

"You blackmailed my dying wife," Luca snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You forced her to suffer in silence."

"I made a business calculation," Anthony corrected smoothly. "You were weak when it came to Katherine. If you had known she was dying, you would have surrendered your territories to me to buy time with her. I just expedited the process."

Vanessa stepped forward, her eyes fixed on Emily, who was trembling behind my apron.

"We don't need to do this the hard way, Luca," Vanessa said softly. "Just sign the transfer deeds for the downtown ports. Give my father control of the shipping routes. And you and the brat can leave Chicago alive."

"I'd rather burn this city to the ground," Luca spat.

Vanessa sighed. She reached up to adjust the collar of her silk blouse.

As she did, the fabric shifted, revealing a necklace resting against her collarbone.

It was a single, flawless teardrop pearl on a delicate gold chain.

My breath stopped in my throat.

"Mr. Moretti," I whispered urgently, grabbing Luca's sleeve. "Look at her neck."

Luca’s eyes flicked to Vanessa’s throat. His expression completely shattered.

It was Katherine's pearl necklace. The one she had worn on her wedding day. The one that had mysteriously gone missing the night she died.

"Where did you get that?" Luca demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, guttural growl.

Vanessa touched the pearl defensively. "It was a gift."

"Katherine was wearing that necklace the night she passed away," Luca said, standing up slowly, completely ignoring the shotguns pointed at him. "The coroner said it wasn't on her body when they arrived. I searched this house for weeks."

He took a step toward Vanessa.

"Did you steal from my dead wife?"

Vanessa’s father stepped in front of her, raising his weapon. "Don't take another step, Luca."

But Vanessa laughed. A cruel, sharp sound.

"I didn't steal it, Luca," she smiled. "I earned it."

Luca froze. "What are you talking about?"

Vanessa looked around the ruined study. "You thought it was a coincidence that we met at that charity gala a year after she died? You thought I just happened to bump into the grieving widower?"

She took the pearl necklace off and dangled it from her fingers.

"My father put me in this house long before we ever started dating, Luca. Do you really think Katherine’s original hospice nurse just 'quit' unexpectedly?"

The room spun.

I remembered the private, overnight nurse the agency had sent during Katherine's final weeks. She wore a surgical mask. She kept the lights dim. She barely spoke to the staff.

"That was you," I gasped, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.

"Ding ding ding," Vanessa mocked. "I administered her medications. I sat beside her while she cried. I watched her write those pathetic little birthday letters."

Emily let out a small, wounded cry.

Luca’s face was completely drained of blood. "You were her nurse."

"And she was so grateful," Vanessa sneered. "On her last night, she gave me this necklace. She told me I had an angel's touch. She told me she hoped you would find someone as caring as I was."

Vanessa dropped the pearl necklace onto the floor. It hit the hardwood with a hollow click.

"But she was in so much pain, Luca," Vanessa whispered, her eyes turning dark. "The morphine just wasn't enough. So... I gave her a little extra. To help her sleep."

The silence in the room was absolute.

She hadn't just stolen the necklace. She had murdered Katherine.

A raw, primal scream tore from Luca's throat.

He didn't fire his gun. He dropped it and launched himself across the room with his bare hands.
