Chapter 7 - THE BLUE ENVELOPE

The early morning light filtered through the broken windows, casting long shadows across the living room.
Luca carefully unfolded the blue paper.
He had spent four years mourning Katherine, believing he had heard her final words. Now, holding a hidden letter, he looked terrified to read it.
"Read it, Mr. Moretti," I encouraged softly. "She meant for you to find it."
He took a deep breath, his eyes tracing the elegant, familiar handwriting.
My dearest Luca,
If you are reading this, it means Emily finally showed you her pink notebook. I told her to hide this letter there, and to only give it to you when she felt you truly needed it.
I am so sorry I lied to you about the cancer. I know the guilt you carry. I know you blame yourself for not seeing it, for not protecting me from Anthony Bellini.
But you must listen to me, Luca. Anthony did not force my hand.
Luca frowned, confused. He read the next line aloud.
"I knew Anthony was plotting against you long before he came to my hospital room. I hired a private investigator months before my diagnosis."
My jaw dropped. Katherine, the gentle, kind woman who loved gardening and baking, had been running her own investigation into the mafia?
Luca continued reading, his voice thick with emotion.
"I found out Anthony was using the legitimate charities I ran to launder his drug money. He was framing you, Luca. He was building a paper trail to hand over to the FBI, to send you to federal prison for the rest of your life so he could take over the city."
Luca lowered the letter, staring at me in absolute shock. "She knew about the offshore accounts. I never told her about that side of the business."
He looked back down at the letter.
"When I got sick, I realized I could use my death to save you. I let Anthony think he was blackmailing me. I played the victim. But in reality, I used my 'silence' to buy time.
I gathered all the evidence of Anthony's framing. The bank statements, the forged signatures, the wire transfers. I put them all in a safe deposit box at the First National Bank downtown.
The silver key to the box is hidden inside Emily's musical jewelry box. The one that plays Clair de Lune."
Luca stopped reading. He looked toward the stairs.
The silver key.
Vanessa had found a silver key in Katherine's vanity and thrown it on Emily's suitcase. She thought it went to a medical file. She didn't realize she had just handed Luca the key that would destroy her family.
Luca read the final paragraph, tears spilling freely onto the blue paper.
"Take the evidence to the FBI, my love. Use it to grant yourself immunity. Leave the life behind. Take our beautiful girl and go somewhere safe. I love you more than this world could hold. Be free."
He pressed the letter to his lips, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs.
Katherine hadn't been a helpless victim. She had been a fiercely protective mother and wife who spent her dying days orchestrating a master plan to destroy her family's enemies and secure their freedom.
"She saved us," Luca whispered. "She saved us from beyond the grave."
He stood up, gently laying the still-sleeping Emily on the sofa and covering her with the blanket.
"Helen, stay with her," Luca said, his eyes burning with renewed purpose. "I'm going upstairs to get that key. Then we are going to the FBI."
"Yes, sir," I said, my heart soaring. Finally, it was truly going to be over.
Luca sprinted up the grand staircase.
I sat beside Emily, brushing the hair from her forehead. The nightmare was ending.
But ten minutes passed, and Luca didn't come back down.
"Mr. Moretti?" I called out softly, not wanting to wake Emily.
No answer.
I felt a sudden, cold prickle of unease at the back of my neck.
I stood up and walked to the base of the stairs. "Luca?"
Still nothing.
I hurried up the stairs, my heart pounding against my ribs. I reached Emily's bedroom, where Vanessa had left the pink suitcase.
The door was wide open.
The suitcase was still there.
But the silver key was gone.
And Luca was nowhere to be found.
"Mr. Moretti!" I yelled, panic rising in my chest.
I ran down the hallway to the master bedroom. Empty. The study. Empty.
I ran back to Emily's room and noticed something on the carpet near the bed.
It was Luca's cell phone. The screen was cracked, as if it had been dropped in a struggle.
I picked it up. A text message was open on the screen. It had been sent five minutes ago from an unknown number.
We have your housekeeper's husband. Bring the key to the downtown pier, or the old man dies.

My stomach plummeted into the floor.
Vanessa's family hadn't given up. They had sent someone after the only family I had left.
