Chapter 4 - The Ransom of a Forgotten Heir

The foyer went dead silent.

Even Daniel, a man who had seen the darkest corners of Chicago’s underworld, took a step back.

Luca stared at the locket dangling from Vanessa’s manicured fingers.

"You're bluffing," he said. But his voice lacked its usual certainty.

Vanessa popped the locket open and held up the faded photograph.

"Am I? Look at his eyes, Luca. They're Antonio’s eyes. The famous Moretti green."

She snapped it shut.

"His name is Leo. He's six years old. I’ve kept him hidden in a private facility since the day he was born. A facility that requires my physical signature every month to keep him safe from the people who want to hurt him."

Maria gripped Daniel’s arm to steady herself.

"You monster," the old woman whispered. "He's your own son."

Vanessa laughed. A harsh, metallic sound.

"My son? Oh, Maria, you always were a sentimental old fool."

She looked straight at Luca.

"I’m not his mother."

The room tilted.

"What?" Luca breathed.

"I couldn't have children," Vanessa sneered. "Antonio knew that. But he wanted an heir so desperately. So he found someone else. A beautiful, naive little waitress. He promised her the world. He promised her protection."

She took a slow, deliberate step toward the center of the foyer.

"When I found out, I was furious. But then Antonio died. And the waitress? Well, she had an unfortunate accident during childbirth."

My blood ran cold.

There were no accidents around this woman.

"I took the boy," Vanessa continued. "Because I knew that one day, he would be the perfect insurance policy."

She looked at her diamond engagement ring, twisting it on her finger.

"I didn't plan on marrying you, Luca. I just needed access to your private accounts. I needed the authorization codes to transfer Antonio’s trust fund. Once I had the money, I was going to leave you at the altar."

Luca’s face was carved from granite.

"Where is the boy, Clara?"

"Safe. For now." She dropped the locket back into her bag. "But the people watching him are very strict. If I don't arrive in Montreal by noon tomorrow with the final payment, they have instructions to dispose of the liability."

She walked toward the front door, stopping just inches from Daniel.

"Now, step aside. I have packing to do."

Daniel didn't move. He looked at Luca for the order.

Luca's chest rose and fell in a slow, measured breath.

"Let her pass."

"Boss—" Daniel started.

"I said let her pass."

Daniel stepped aside.

Vanessa smirked, pulling her coat over her shoulders.

"Have my bags brought to the car at dawn," she said to me, her voice dripping with venom. "And make sure my shoes are polished, Rachel."

She walked out into the cold night, the heavy doors shutting behind her.

Maria covered her face with her hands, sobbing quietly.

"Luca, you cannot let her leave. She will kill the boy."

Luca turned toward Daniel.

"Put a tracker on her car. Ground every private jet in the city. Call the mayor if you have to. Nobody flies out of Chicago tonight."

"Done," Daniel said, immediately pulling out his phone.

Luca walked over to Maria.

He gently wrapped his arms around the woman who had practically raised him.

"I've got you, Mama Maria," he whispered into her gray hair. "You're home now. You are never leaving this house again."

Maria wept against his shoulder.

I stood by the staircase, feeling entirely out of my depth.

I was just a housemaid. I shouldn't be hearing any of this.

I quietly turned to slip away to the kitchens.

"Rachel."

Luca's voice stopped me.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

He released Maria into Mrs. Carter’s care and walked over to me.

He looked exhausted, the weight of a twenty-year betrayal crashing down on him all at once.

"Vanessa said she runs background checks on the staff," he said quietly.

"Yes, sir."

"Did she threaten your mother?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

"Yes, sir. She knows about the medical debt."

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black card.

"Take this."

I stared at it.

"Sir, I can't—"

"Take it," he commanded, though his eyes were gentle. "Pay off the debt tonight. Move your mother to a private clinic. Give Daniel the address, and he will post guards at her door."

My eyes filled with tears.

"Thank you, Mr. Moretti."

"You risked your job to protect Maria today. You stood up to Vanessa when you thought she had all the power. You protected my family, Rachel. I protect mine."

He turned back toward the study.

"Get some rest. Tomorrow is going to be a long day."

I went to my small quarters at the back of the house.

I made the transfer to the hospital, securing my mother’s care. The relief was overwhelming.

But I couldn't sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the face of that little boy in the locket.

At 3:00 AM, the estate was dead silent.

I was sitting in the dark kitchen, drinking a glass of water, when I heard it.

A soft scraping sound.

Coming from the back patio doors.

I froze.

The security system was armed. Daniel had guards patrolling the perimeter.

But the sound came again.

Like a small hand dragging across the glass.

I put down my glass and crept toward the heavy drapes.

I pulled them back just an inch.

Standing on the cold stone patio, shivering in a thin blue jacket, was a little boy.

He had dark hair.

And striking green eyes.

He was clutching a torn piece of paper in his frozen hands.

May you like

And he was staring directly at me.
