Chapter 8 - The End of the Line

Vanessa’s eyes locked onto mine.
Her perfectly manicured facade was completely gone. Her hair was messy, her red silk gown torn at the hem from climbing the balcony trellis.
She looked like a cornered animal.
She raised the revolver, pointing it directly at my chest.
"Hand him over, Rachel."
I pushed Leo further behind me, shielding his small body with my own.
"No."
Vanessa cocked the hammer. The metallic click echoed in the small space.
"I am not playing games with a maid," she hissed. "I am leaving this estate. The boy is my ticket out. If you don't step aside, I will shoot you, and I will take him anyway."
My whole body was shaking, but I didn't move.
"You won't make it to the gate," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "Luca knows everything. He knows about the tape. He knows about Antonio."
Vanessa’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second.
Then, her face twisted into a mask of pure hatred.
"Salvatore," she whispered. "That incompetent old fool."
Before she could pull the trigger, a voice boomed from the bedroom door.
"Drop it, Clara!"
Vanessa whipped around.
Luca was standing at the entrance to the closet, his own weapon drawn and leveled squarely at her head.
Behind him stood Daniel, flanked by two heavily armed security guards.
"It's over," Luca said. His voice was terrifyingly calm. "Put the gun down."
Vanessa let out a manic laugh.
She grabbed my arm, yanking me forward, and jammed the barrel of her revolver against my temple.
Leo screamed.
"Get back!" Vanessa shrieked, using me as a human shield. "Get back, or I swear to God I'll paint this closet with her brains!"
Luca didn't flinch, but his eyes darted to the terror on my face.
"Let her go, Clara. She has nothing to do with this."
"She ruined everything!" Vanessa screamed. "If she hadn't helped Maria at the fountain, none of this would be happening!"
She began dragging me backward toward the balcony doors.
"Have your men stand down, Luca. I am walking out of here with the girl. When I am safely in a car, I'll let her go."
"You're lying," Luca said coldly. "You don't leave witnesses. You proved that on the boat."
Vanessa’s grip tightened on my arm. The metal of the gun dug painfully into my skin.
"Do you want to test me?" she snarled. "Tell them to drop their weapons! Now!"
Luca slowly lowered his gun.
"Do it," he ordered Daniel.
Daniel hesitated, then lowered his weapon, the guards following suit.
Vanessa smirked.
"Good. Now back away."
She pulled me out of the closet and toward the open balcony doors. The cold wind whipped through the room.
I looked at Luca.
His eyes met mine.
And in that split second, I saw it.
A subtle, nearly imperceptible nod.
He wasn't surrendering. He was giving me a signal.
Drop.
Vanessa took another step backward, stepping onto the threshold of the balcony.
I let my knees buckle entirely.
I threw my entire body weight straight down toward the floor.
Vanessa staggered forward, thrown off balance by my sudden drop. The gun wavered away from my head.
BANG.
The gunshot was deafening in the enclosed space.
But it wasn't Vanessa who fired.
Luca’s shot hit the gun clean out of her hand, shattering the cylinder and sending the weapon skittering across the balcony tiles.
Vanessa screamed, clutching her shattered hand.
Before she could recover, Daniel crossed the room in two strides, tackling her to the ground and pinning her arms behind her back.
I scrambled backward, gasping for air.
Luca dropped his weapon, rushed past Vanessa, and fell to his knees beside me.
"Rachel." He grabbed my shoulders, checking me over frantically. "Are you hit? Are you hurt?"
"I'm okay," I choked out, tears finally spilling over. "I'm okay."
From the closet, a small figure came running out.
"Rachel!"
Leo threw his arms around my neck, burying his face in my shoulder, sobbing hysterically.
I hugged him back as tightly as I could.
Luca watched us, his chest heaving, his face softening with an overwhelming mix of relief and sorrow.
"Get her out of my sight," Luca said to Daniel, his voice cold again. "Put her in the basement holding cell. The police are already on their way."
As the guards dragged a screaming, cursing Vanessa out of the room, Luca reached out and gently stroked Leo’s hair.
"You're safe now, little one," Luca whispered. "You're both safe."
Just then, another guard appeared at the door.

"Boss. We have Salvatore."
