testify

Chapter 10 - THE NAME ON THE CLINIC RECORDS

The head housekeeper stood perfectly still in the dim kitchen, the suppressed pistol aimed directly at Luca’s chest.

Mrs. Carter. The woman who had hired me. The woman who had told me to hide my injured hand. The woman who had managed the Moretti household for fifteen years.

"Mrs. Carter?" I gasped, the betrayal hitting me harder than anything else that night. "You're the one texting me?"

Mrs. Carter didn't look at me. Her eyes were locked on Luca.

"I sent the texts to bring you back here, Anna," Mrs. Carter said, her voice completely devoid of its usual warmth. "I needed Luca to bring the authentication codes on his phone. The brooch alone isn't enough to clear the transfer. I need his biometric approval."

Luca didn't raise his gun. He stared at the woman who had practically raised him after his own mother died.

"You're working with Eleanor Whitmore," Luca said, the devastation clear in his voice. "You're the inside man."

"Eleanor is a fool," Mrs. Carter scoffed, pocketing the pearl brooch. "She thinks she's the mastermind because she forged a signature nine years ago. But she couldn't move a dime without my access to your internal servers. I let her play her little game at dinner to get Vanessa out of the way. Now, I'm taking the money."

"Why?" Luca asked quietly. "I treated you like family, Martha."

"Family?" Mrs. Carter laughed bitterly. "You pay me to clean up your blood, Luca. Fifteen years of sweeping up glass and hiding bodies. I watched you mourn a dead wife while I knew exactly where your daughter was. I kept Eleanor's secret, and she promised me half the offshore accounts."

She stepped closer, raising the gun to Luca's head.

"Unlock your phone, Luca," Mrs. Carter demanded. "Authorize the transfer."

"Shoot me," Luca said coldly. "You'll never get the money."

"I won't shoot you," Mrs. Carter smiled.

She shifted her aim, pointing the gun directly at me.

"I'll shoot the maid," Mrs. Carter said. "And then I'll walk out to the driveway and put a bullet in your nine-year-old daughter."

Luca went rigid.

"Leave them out of this," Luca growled.

"Then unlock the phone!" Mrs. Carter screamed.

Luca slowly reached into his pocket. He pulled out his phone. The screen illuminated his exhausted face in the dark kitchen.

He brought up the banking app. It required a thumbprint.

"Do it," Mrs. Carter ordered.

Luca looked at me. His eyes were filled with an apology he couldn't speak. He was going to give up his empire to save my life.

He raised his thumb toward the screen.

Suddenly, the kitchen doors burst open.

Thomas Whitmore stumbled into the room, covered in soot and gasping for air. He had survived the panic room.

"Mom!" Thomas yelled, holding a heavy iron fire poker.

Mrs. Carter flinched, startled by the sudden noise.

She turned her gun toward Thomas for a fraction of a second.

That was all Luca needed.

Luca lunged forward, slapping the gun away with his left hand. The weapon fired, the bullet shattering a row of ceramic plates on the counter.

With his right hand, Luca grabbed Mrs. Carter by the collar and slammed her hard against the stainless steel refrigerator.

She dropped the gun, gasping for air as Luca pinned her.

"It's over, Martha," Luca whispered, his voice like ice.

Thomas dropped the fire poker, falling to his knees in exhaustion. "My mother... she locked me in. She tried to kill me."

"Your mother won't get far without this," Luca said.

He reached into Mrs. Carter's pocket and pulled out the pearl brooch.

He threw it onto the floor and crushed it beneath the heel of his heavy boot. The encrypted drive shattered into a hundred useless pieces. The three hundred million dollars was permanently locked back into the Moretti accounts.

Two of Luca's armed guards rushed into the kitchen, drawn by the gunshot.

"Take her," Luca ordered, shoving Mrs. Carter toward them. "Lock her in the basement until the police arrive. Tell them she was an accomplice to Dr. Bellini."

As they dragged the screaming housekeeper away, the kitchen fell silent.

Luca leaned against the counter, breathing heavily. He looked at Thomas, who was weeping on the floor.

"You saved my daughter, Thomas," Luca said softly. "You saved Anna. The Moretti family owes you a debt that can never be repaid. You are under my protection now."

Thomas looked up, wiping his eyes. "I just want Lily to be safe."

"She will be," Luca promised.

An hour later, the sun began to rise over the snowy Chicago skyline.

The police had arrested Dr. Bellini’s remaining men. Mrs. Carter was in custody. A massive manhunt had been launched for Eleanor Whitmore, but without the money, she was powerless.

I stood on the front steps of the mansion, watching the snow fall. My left hand was heavily bandaged, but the pain had dulled to a manageable ache.

The front doors opened.

Luca walked out, holding a sleeping Lily in his arms. The little girl had her head resting on his good shoulder, completely safe, completely loved.

He stopped beside me on the steps.

"Anna," Luca said quietly.

I turned to look at the mafia boss.

"You didn't have to protect her tonight," Luca said. "You could have walked away. You could have kept your mouth shut about the bracelet."

"I couldn't let Vanessa take her, Mr. Moretti," I said softly. "She belongs with her father."

Luca looked down at his sleeping daughter, a gentle, genuine smile crossing his exhausted face.

"I'm dissolving the syndicates, Anna," Luca said. "No more illegal clinics. No more offshore accounts. I'm turning the estate into a legitimate foundation. I want Lily to grow up in a clean house."

He looked back at me.

"I need someone I trust to run the foundation's operations," Luca said. "Someone who knows how to spot a lie. Someone brave enough to stand between a gun and a child."

My eyes filled with tears.

"Mr. Moretti, I'm just a maid," I whispered.

"Not anymore," Luca said, his voice firm but warm. "Your mother's medical bills are paid for life. And you have a permanent place in this family."

I looked at the sleeping little girl, then at the man who had torn his world apart to find her.

The secrets were exposed. The traitors were gone.

For the first time since I had walked into the Moretti mansion, I didn't feel afraid.

"Thank you, Luca," I said.

The sun broke through the winter clouds, casting a warm, golden light over the estate.

The long, terrifying night was finally over.

And the Moretti family was finally whole.
