Chapter 9 - THE REVOLVER IN THE SNOW

The revelation hit the inside of the SUV like a physical shockwave.

Three hundred million dollars. Stolen by an elderly woman who had spent the entire evening trembling and crying into a linen napkin.

"Track the IP address of the transfer," Luca barked into the phone, his exhaustion entirely replaced by lethal focus. "Lock down the airports, the train stations, and the shipping ports. She can't move that kind of money without a physical authentication token. Find her!"

Luca hung up the phone and slammed his fist against the dashboard.

Lily stirred in her sleep next to me, frowning, but she didn't wake up.

"I let her sit at my table," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute self-loathing. "I gave her tea while she was planning to rob me blind."

"She played all of us," I said softly, looking out at the falling snow. "She used Vanessa's arrogance as a distraction. While we were fighting for Lily's life, she was executing a bank heist."

"But she left Thomas behind," I realized suddenly. "Her own son. She let Vanessa hold a gun to his head."

Luca looked back at me, his eyes dark.

"In our world, Anna, blood is just a bargaining chip," Luca said. "She didn't care about Thomas. She didn't care about Vanessa. She only cared about the money."

My phone buzzed again.

Another text from the unknown number.

“She didn't go to the airport, Anna. She needs a physical token to clear the offshore transfer. And she left it at the mansion.”

I read the text aloud to Luca.

"Who is sending you these messages?" Luca demanded.

"I don't know," I said, my heart pounding. "But if they're right... what physical token would she need?"

Luca’s eyes widened.

"The pearl brooch," Luca breathed.

I frowned. "The brooch she was wearing on her blue dress?"

"It’s not just jewelry," Luca explained, his voice urgent. "It's a specialized encrypted hard drive. High-level syndicate bankers use them to authorize massive international wire transfers. I noticed it on her dress during dinner, but I thought it was just a vintage piece."

"She was wearing it at dinner," I said, trying to remember. "But when she sat next to you... when I helped her to the chair... she wasn't wearing it."

Luca stared at me. "Where is it?"

My mind raced back to the chaos in the pantry. The broken glass. The velvet box.

"When she came into the pantry," I said, the memory crystallizing, "she took off her coat. She unpinned the brooch to adjust her dress. She set it on the shelf next to the flour canisters."

"Did she pick it back up?" Luca asked.

"No," I said. "Vanessa walked in, they started arguing, the glass broke, and I cut my hand. In the panic, Mrs. Whitmore left the pantry without it."

Luca immediately grabbed the radio on the SUV console.

"All units, turn around," Luca commanded. "We're going back to the mansion. The target is returning to the primary location."

The three black SUVs slammed on their brakes, doing violent U-turns in the snowy road, and rocketed back toward the Moretti estate.

"If she gets that brooch, she disappears with half my empire," Luca said, checking his handgun. He only had three bullets left.

"Mr. Moretti," I said, terrified. "She won't be alone. She knows your men are securing the house."

"She's a seventy-year-old woman, Anna," Luca said grimly. "She doesn't need to fight. She just needs to slip in, grab the drive, and slip out."

Ten minutes later, we burst through the shattered front doors of the mansion.

The foyer was still a disaster zone from the fallen chandelier. Luca's men had cleared the bodies, but the house was eerily silent.

"Secure the perimeter! Nobody gets in or out!" Luca shouted to his guards.

He turned to me. "Stay here with Lily in the car. Lock the doors."

"No," I said, stepping out of the SUV. "I know exactly where the brooch is. I can find it faster than your men tearing the kitchen apart."

Luca hesitated, then nodded. "Stay behind me."

We moved quickly and silently through the ruined dining room, stepping over shattered plates and overturned chairs. The grand engagement dinner felt like it had happened a lifetime ago.

We reached the swinging doors of the servants' kitchen.

Luca pushed them open, his gun raised.

The kitchen was dark. The emergency lights cast long, terrifying shadows across the stainless steel prep tables.

I walked toward the pantry in the back corner.

The door was slightly ajar.

"It's on the second shelf," I whispered, pointing to the dark room. "Behind the flour."

Luca stepped into the pantry, his flashlight cutting through the gloom.

He reached up to the second shelf.

His hand closed around empty air.

"It's not here," Luca said, his voice tight.

Suddenly, a cold, metallic click echoed behind us.

"Looking for this, Mr. Moretti?"

We whipped around.

Standing in the shadows of the kitchen, holding the pearl brooch in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other, was Mrs. Carter.
