Chapter 11 - The Truth

The next few weeks were a blur of police statements, legal meetings, and healing.

Vanessa Bellini and Daniel were indicted on federal charges, ensuring they would never see the outside of a prison wall again. The Bellini crime family completely collapsed, their assets frozen and seized.

I didn't return to the small, ransacked apartment.

Isabella Moretti insisted I move into a private guest suite in the east wing of the mansion. She treated me not as a maid, but as a daughter-in-law. She spent hours sitting with me in the garden, telling me stories about Matthew when he was young, filling in the gaps of the man I loved.

I learned that Matthew had loved fixing old bicycles as a boy. I learned he had a terrible singing voice. I learned that he had left the family because he couldn't stand the violence.

And I learned that Luca had known exactly who I was the day he hired me.

It was a Tuesday afternoon. The mansion was quiet. Luca and I were sitting in the library, drinking coffee near the fireplace where Vanessa had almost destroyed everything.

"You knew," I said quietly, looking at him over the rim of my cup.

Luca froze, his coffee halfway to his mouth. "Knew what?"

"You knew I was Matthew's widow before Vanessa took my ring," I said. "And you knew Matthew was connected to your family."

Luca slowly lowered his cup. He looked into the fire for a long moment before turning to me.

"I didn't know he was my uncle," Luca said softly. "I swear to you, Abigail. I thought Matteo was dead. But I knew your husband wasn't just a random mechanic."

"How?"

"Because Daniel didn't hide the toolbox well enough," Luca confessed. "Six months ago, I found a financial discrepancy in Daniel’s accounts. I started digging. I found out he had paid off a mechanic named Matthew Foster right before Matthew died."

My breath caught. "Daniel paid Matthew?"

"A bribe," Luca nodded. "To keep quiet about the ledger in Vanessa's car. Matthew took the money to make Daniel think he was compliant, but he mailed the evidence away anyway."

Luca looked at me, profound guilt in his dark eyes.

"I thought Matthew was dirty. I thought he was working for the Bellinis. When I found out he had a widow struggling to pay rent, I hired you to keep an eye on you. I thought you might know where the missing ledger was."

I stared at him. "You hired me as a maid to spy on me?"

"I wanted to protect my family," Luca said, his voice desperate. "But then I got to know you, Abigail. I watched you work. I watched how kind you were. I saw you touching that ring every time you got nervous. I realized you had no idea about any of it."

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

"I was going to fire you with a massive severance package the day after the engagement dinner. I wanted to send you far away from my world, so you would be safe. But then Vanessa took your ring. And when I saw the engraving... Always come home safe... I knew Matthew wasn't a traitor. He was a victim."

I looked at the emerald bracelet on my wrist.

Luca had lied to me by omission. He had brought me into the lion's den. But when the lions bared their teeth, he had thrown himself in front of me.

"I'm sorry, Abigail," Luca whispered. "I'm so sorry."

I stood up from my chair and walked over to him. I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

I reached out and gently took his hand, tracing the tattoos on his knuckles.

"Matthew lied to me to protect me," I said softly. "You lied to me to protect your family. I’m tired of lies, Luca. But I’m not angry."

Luca looked up, a fierce, desperate hope in his eyes.

"Tomorrow is the anniversary of Matthew's death," I said. "I've always gone to the cemetery alone. Will you come with me?"
