Chapter 10 - The Photograph

The bank vault was deathly silent.

I felt like the floor had vanished beneath my feet. Eighteen months of grieving a humble mechanic, a man with grease on his hands and simple dreams, completely shattered in a single paragraph.

"He was your uncle," I whispered, staring at Luca.

Luca was still looking at the journal, his dark eyes wide with shock. "My father told me stories about Matteo. He was the one who refused to join the family business. He wanted a normal life. He disappeared when I was nineteen."

I grabbed the journal and frantically turned the pages, searching for an explanation.

I changed my name, Matthew had written. I built a quiet life. And then I found you, Abby. You were the best thing that ever happened to me. But a year ago, my brother was killed in that crash. I knew it wasn't an accident. I knew the Bellinis did it. I couldn't run anymore. I had to protect his son. I had to protect Luca.

Tears spilled freely down my face.

Matthew hadn't been a random victim. He had purposefully taken the job at Earl's garage because he knew the Bellini family used it for off-the-books repairs. He had been hunting for evidence to destroy Vanessa’s family to avenge his brother.

He had died protecting his nephew.

"He knew who I was," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. "He was watching over me from the shadows. And I never even knew he was alive."

I looked at the bottom of the lockbox. There was one last item resting beneath the letters.

It was a small, framed photograph.

I pulled it out. It was a picture of Matthew, looking incredibly young, standing next to an older man with a fierce, proud smile. They were standing in front of the Chicago mansion.

"That’s my father," Luca said softly, touching the glass of the frame.

I turned the photograph over. Taped to the back was a small, velvet jewelry box.

I pried it off and opened the lid.

Inside lay a breathtaking, massive emerald bracelet, surrounded by intricate diamonds. It was an antique, heavy and undeniably priceless.

Tucked beneath the bracelet was a final, small note.

For Abby. The Moretti family heirloom. It belongs to my wife. If Luca is the man his father raised him to be, he will make sure you are safe.

I broke down. I pressed my face into my hands and sobbed until I couldn't breathe.

I cried for the secrets Matthew had carried. I cried for the terrifying, lonely war he had fought all by himself. And I cried because he had loved me enough to keep me entirely out of the darkness until the very end.

Luca gently wrapped his arms around me. He didn't say it was going to be okay. He just held me in the quiet vault, letting me grieve the husband I had lost all over again.

When my tears finally slowed, I pulled back and looked at the emerald bracelet.

"I can't take this," I whispered. "It belongs to your family."

"You are my family," Luca said, his voice fierce and unyielding. "You were married to a Moretti. You carry our name, Abigail. That bracelet is yours."

He gently lifted the heavy emeralds and fastened the clasp around my wrist. The cold stones felt like a heavy, beautiful anchor.

"Come home," Luca said.

And for the first time since Matthew died, the word 'home' didn't feel like an empty apartment.
