Chapter 4 - THE SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX

The temperature in the study seemed to drop ten degrees.
Vanessa remained on her knees, staring at the iron key in Luca's hand as if it were a loaded gun.
"I don't know what that is," she stammered, her voice high and thin.
Luca didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. "The bank manager was very cooperative once I proved I was the executor of Dominic’s estate. You forged Dominic’s signature two days after he died to gain access to his private accounts."
Vanessa shook her head frantically. "I was his girlfriend! We were going to get married!"
"He was planning to leave you, Vanessa," Luca said softly. "He came to me the night before he died. He told me he made a mistake. He said he was going to end things with you."
Vanessa squeezed her eyes shut. "He was lying. We had a fight. He didn't mean it."
"He meant it enough to draft a new will," Luca continued, the calm edge in his voice cutting deeper than any shout. "A will that left you nothing. But you got to his apartment before the police did. You found the new draft. And you destroyed it."
I stood frozen by the mahogany desk. I was witnessing the unravelling of a criminal empire’s darkest family secret, and Luca hadn't once asked me to leave the room.
"You stole three million dollars from my brother's accounts," Luca stated. "And you used it to buy your way into my social circle. You bought the clothes, the apartment, the charity donations—everything you needed to make sure I noticed you."
"I did it for Leo!" Vanessa screamed, suddenly looking up. "I did it to give his son a good life!"
"You left his son in a cramped apartment in Milwaukee with a mother you abandoned!" Luca finally raised his voice, the roar echoing off the bookshelves. "You used my brother's money to buy yourself a red silk gown while your mother begged for a dinner roll in my dining room!"
Vanessa flinched violently.
Luca took a deep, shuddering breath, regaining his composure. He looked at the iron key.
"But that wasn't the worst thing I found in the safety deposit box."
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Luca looked directly into her eyes. "I found the police report. The one the responding officer filed the night of Dominic's crash. The officer who mysteriously retired two weeks later and moved to Florida."
Vanessa scrambled to her feet, her hands reaching out in blind panic. "Luca, don't. Please don't say it. Margaret is still out there. Don't let her hear this."
"She deserves to hear exactly who her daughter is," Luca said.
He looked at me. "Natalie, open the top drawer of my desk."
I swallowed hard, stepped forward, and pulled the heavy brass handle. Inside the drawer, resting on top of a leather ledger, was a clear plastic evidence bag.
Inside the bag was a shattered cell phone.
"Bring it here," Luca instructed.
I picked up the plastic bag. The glass screen was completely spider-webbed, covered in dried, dark-brown stains that I instantly recognized as old blood. My stomach churned.
I handed it to Luca.
"Dominic didn't lose control of his car on an icy road," Luca said, staring at the phone. "He was distracted. He was arguing with someone. The corrupt cop you paid off managed to bury the forensic report."
Luca held the bag up to the light.
"You called him, Vanessa. Fifty-two times in twenty minutes. You knew he was driving on the canyon road. You knew it was dangerous."
"I was trying to apologize!" Vanessa sobbed.
"You weren't apologizing," Luca said coldly. "The carrier pulled the voicemails yesterday. You were screaming at him. You told him that if he left you, you would tell me that he was the one embezzling from the family business."
My eyes widened.
"He checked his phone because you sent him a picture," Luca said. "A picture of the forged ledger you planted in his office. He looked away from the road for three seconds. And he died."
Vanessa covered her ears. "Stop it! Stop it!"
"You killed my brother," Luca whispered. "And then you hid his son. And then you crawled into my bed."
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Vanessa slowly lowered her hands. The tears stopped. The panic vanished.
When she looked up, her expression was completely blank. The mask had fully shattered, revealing the cold, calculating survivor beneath.
"So what now, Luca?" she asked, her voice steady. "Are you going to kill me? Make me disappear? The great Luca Moretti, getting his hands dirty over a tragic car accident?"
"I don't need to touch you," Luca said.
"Then I'll just leave," Vanessa said, lifting her chin. "I'll pack my bags. I'll take my mother, and I'll go back to Milwaukee."
"You're not going anywhere near Mrs. Ellis," Luca warned.
"She's my mother," Vanessa sneered. "And Leo is my son. You have no legal right to him. If you try to take him, I will drag your family name through every tabloid in this city. I will tell them the mafia boss kidnapped a grieving mother's child. I will ruin you, Luca."
She turned and marched toward the study door.
Before she reached the hallway, a small, fragile voice stopped her.
"No, you won't."
Vanessa froze.
Standing in the doorway was Margaret.
Her gray wool coat was still perfectly buttoned. But she wasn't crying anymore. She was holding a thick, manila envelope in her trembling hands.
"Mother, get out of the way," Vanessa snapped.
Margaret didn't move. She looked at Luca.
"Mr. Moretti," Margaret said quietly. "I didn't take the bus from Milwaukee today. I took a taxi."
Vanessa frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Margaret looked at her daughter with absolute, devastating pity.

"I didn't come here to see your engagement ring, Vanessa. I came here to give Mr. Moretti custody papers."
