Chapter 5 - THE PAPERS IN THE ENVELOPE

Vanessa stared at the manila envelope in her mother's hands.
"Custody papers?" Vanessa repeated, letting out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "You're senile, Mother. You can't sign away custody of a child that isn't legally yours."
Margaret didn't flinch. She stepped fully into the study, the heavy doors closing softly behind her.
"He is legally mine, Vanessa," Margaret said quietly.
Vanessa’s smile vanished. "What?"
Margaret looked at Luca, then back at her daughter.
"Three years ago, you needed a background check for the charity board you were trying to join. You needed to prove you had no dependents. You mailed me a stack of legal documents and told me to sign them quickly so the lawyers could process them."
Margaret’s hands gripped the envelope tightly.
"You told me it was just temporary guardianship paperwork in case you traveled. But you were always in such a rush, Vanessa. You never read the fine print."
Vanessa’s breath hitched. "What did you do?"
"I took them to a legal aid clinic," Margaret answered. "The lawyer there realized what you were actually trying to do. You were trying to sever your legal ties to Leo so your background check would come back clean. But you were too lazy to file it yourself."
Margaret opened the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of paper with a gold notary seal.
"I didn't sign temporary guardianship," Margaret said, her voice trembling but resolute. "I filed for full, permanent adoption on the grounds of maternal abandonment. And because you signed the waivers without reading them… the judge granted it."
Vanessa looked like she had been struck by lightning. "You... you stole my son?"
"You threw him away," Margaret corrected gently. "I just caught him."
Luca stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the elderly woman. The respect in his posture was palpable.
"Mrs. Ellis," Luca said softly. "Are you saying you have full legal authority over Leo?"
"Yes, sir," Margaret nodded. "He is my son now, in the eyes of the law. And I am an old woman. I have arthritis. I take the bus. I cannot give a nine-year-old boy the life he deserves."
She held the envelope out toward Luca.
"But a father's brother could."
Luca stared at the envelope. His hands, usually so steady, trembled slightly as he reached out and took it from her.
Vanessa let out a guttural scream.
She lunged at her mother, her manicured hands raised like claws. "Give him back! You miserable old hag, you ruined everything!"
Before Vanessa could reach her, I stepped in front of Margaret.
I didn't think. I just reacted. I shoved Vanessa hard in the chest.
She stumbled backward in her bare feet, her heels catching on the thick Persian rug. She crashed into the leather armchair, gasping for air.
"Don't you ever touch her," I said, my voice shaking with adrenaline.
Vanessa looked at me, pure venom in her eyes. Then she looked at Luca, who was carefully sliding the legal documents out of the envelope.
"You think you've won?" Vanessa spat, scrambling to her feet. "You think you can just erase me? I still know everything about your business, Luca. The off-shore accounts. The politicians you own. I will go to the FBI tonight!"
"Go," Luca said without looking up from the paperwork.
Vanessa hesitated. "What?"
Luca finally raised his eyes. They were completely devoid of emotion.
"Go to the FBI, Vanessa. Tell them everything you know about my business."
He walked over to his desk, picked up the office phone, and dialed a three-digit extension.
"Security," a voice answered through the speaker.
"Miss Bellini is leaving," Luca said. "Escort her to the front gates. Do not let her pack a bag. She leaves with the clothes on her back."
"Understood, Mr. Moretti."
Luca hung up.
Vanessa stared at him, suddenly realizing the gravity of her situation. She had no money. No leverage. No son. And the man she had tried to manipulate owned half the city.
"Luca, please," she whimpered, the fight completely draining out of her. "I have nowhere to go. I don't have a coat. It's freezing outside."
Luca looked at her.
"You should have thought about that before you complained about a hungry woman eating my bread."
The study doors opened. Two enormous men in dark suits stepped inside. They didn't say a word. They simply stood on either side of Vanessa.
"No," Vanessa cried, tears streaming down her face. "Mother, tell them! Tell him to let me stay!"
Margaret looked at her daughter. For a moment, the immense pain of a mother watching her child fail washed over her wrinkled face.
Then Margaret slowly turned away.
"Goodbye, Vanessa," she whispered.
The guards took Vanessa by the arms and pulled her out of the room. Her screams echoed down the long hallway, growing fainter and fainter until the heavy front doors of the mansion slammed shut.
The silence returned.
Luca looked down at the adoption papers. He traced his thumb over the name Leo Dominic Ellis.
He closed his eyes, exhaling a breath he looked like he’d been holding for eight years.
Then he looked at Margaret.
"Mrs. Ellis," Luca said gently. "Where is my nephew right now?"
"He's with my neighbor, Mrs. Higgins, in Milwaukee," Margaret said softly. "She's watching him until tomorrow."
Luca nodded. He walked over to the desk and picked up his car keys.
"Natalie," Luca said, turning to me.
"Yes, sir?"
"Go to the kitchen. Ask the chef to pack a basket with sandwiches, fruit, and whatever sweets we have left from the dinner. Then go to your room and pack a warm coat."
I frowned. "Sir?"
Luca walked over to Margaret and offered her his arm.
"Mrs. Ellis," Luca said softly. "Would you mind showing Natalie and me the way to Milwaukee? I think it's time my nephew came home."
Margaret's eyes filled with fresh tears. She smiled and placed her trembling hand on his arm.
"I would love that, Mr. Moretti."
I rushed to the kitchen, my heart soaring. But as I gathered the food into a large picnic basket, my phone buzzed in my apron pocket.
It was a text message from an unknown number.
