Chapter 2 - The Man Sitting Beside the Fiancée

The dining room went entirely still.

Forty guests stopped breathing.

The clinking of crystal glasses ceased, leaving only the heavy sound of the rain beating against the long windows.

Luca Moretti stared at the man sitting two chairs away from Vanessa.

Julian Rossi.

Julian wasn’t just a guest. He was Luca’s cousin. His financial advisor. The man who managed the legitimate front of the Moretti family empire.

Julian slowly placed his wine glass on the linen tablecloth.

He didn’t look panicked.

He looked annoyed.

“Daniel,” Julian said, his voice smooth and calm. “You’re confused, buddy. I haven’t seen your mother in eighteen months.”

Daniel gripped his father’s wet jacket.

“You’re lying.”

The twelve-year-old’s voice shook, but his eyes were entirely focused.

“You were in the hallway. You had an envelope. You told Mom if she didn’t sign the papers, you’d make sure Dad went to prison forever.”

A collective gasp rippled through the guests.

Vanessa stepped forward, her face flushed with panic.

“Luca, this is insane. The boy has been standing in the freezing rain. He’s exhausted and imagining things.”

She reached for Daniel’s arm.

Luca blocked her hand without even looking at her.

His eyes remained locked on his cousin.

“Julian,” Luca said quietly. “Stand up.”

Julian sighed, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive suit, and pushed his chair back.

“Luca, listen to yourself. You’re taking the word of a child over the man who has kept your businesses out of federal court for a decade.”

Luca didn’t raise his voice.

He didn’t need to.

“Were you in my house the night my wife left?”

Julian looked around the room. He saw the guards standing near the doors. He saw that Luca wasn’t going to back down to save face in front of the guests.

“Yes,” Julian admitted.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Why?” Luca asked.

Julian slipped his hands into his pockets.

“Because Isabella asked me to come.”

I watched Luca’s shoulders tense.

“She called me crying,” Julian continued, his tone turning sympathetic. “She said she couldn’t handle the lifestyle anymore. The bodyguards, the threats, the stress of your world. She wanted a fresh start, but she knew you’d never let her take Daniel.”

Julian took a step closer to the head of the table.

“She asked me for two million dollars in untraceable cash, Luca. In exchange, she promised to sign the divorce papers and walk away quietly. I gave her the envelope to protect you. To protect the family from a messy public trial.”

The room was painfully silent.

I looked at Luca.

For eighteen months, he had believed his wife abandoned him and their son because she simply stopped loving them.

Now, his trusted cousin was giving him a reason that made terrible, logical sense.

She hadn’t just left. She had been bought out.

Answer one.

It explained why Isabella vanished so suddenly. It explained why the divorce papers were signed without a fight.

I could see the betrayal breaking Luca’s heart all over again.

He looked down at his son.

“Daniel,” Luca whispered, his voice cracking. “Did your mother take an envelope from Julian?”

Daniel’s lower lip trembled.

He looked at Julian, terrified, but he nodded.

“Yes.”

Julian offered a sad, patronizing smile.

“I’m sorry, Luca. I didn’t want to break your heart. I was only trying to shield you from what she truly was.”

Vanessa exhaled loudly, regaining her confidence.

“You see, darling? Isabella made her choice. She took the money. Now, please, let’s get Daniel dried off and salvage the rest of the evening.”

She reached for Luca’s arm again.

This time, he let her touch him.

The fight seemed to drain out of him. The anger was replaced by a hollow, devastating grief.

He believed them.

I stood near the wall, my hands trembling as I held the serving tray.

I knew what it was like to need money. I knew what desperation felt like. But I had watched Daniel arrange that empty chair every Sunday. I knew a mother’s love didn't just evaporate for cash.

Then, Daniel reached into his wet blue backpack.

He didn’t pull out his baseball glove.

He pulled out a heavy, glittering object and dropped it onto the dining table.

It hit the mahogany with a heavy, metallic thud.

It was an emerald bracelet.

A thick, antique gold band set with six massive, flawless emeralds.

The guests closest to the table gasped.

Vanessa snatched her hand back from Luca’s arm as if she had been burned.

Luca stared at the bracelet, the color draining entirely from his face.

“Where did you get that?” Luca breathed.

Daniel wiped his eyes with the back of his wet sleeve.

“Mom gave it to me today. She said to hide it in my backpack and only show it to you if Vanessa tried to say she ran away.”

Julian’s calm facade finally cracked.

He took a step backward.

“That’s impossible,” Julian muttered.

Luca picked up the heavy bracelet.

“My grandmother’s emeralds,” Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with a sudden, lethal clarity. “I gave this to Isabella on the day Daniel was born.”

He looked up at Julian.

The grief in his eyes was gone.

The mafia boss had returned.

“Isabella loved this bracelet more than anything I ever bought her,” Luca said, taking a slow step toward his cousin. “She explicitly stated in her wedding vows that she would pass it down to Daniel’s future wife.”

Luca held the emeralds up to the chandelier light.

“If my wife wanted two million dollars to start a new life, Julian…”

Luca’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper.

“Why would she leave behind a bracelet worth four million?”

Vanessa swallowed hard, stepping behind her chair.

“Maybe she forgot it in her rush, darling,” she offered weakly.

But Teresa Moretti, who had been sitting quietly in her chair the entire time, suddenly spoke up.

Her voice was frail, but it carried across the dead-silent room.

“She didn’t forget it, Vanessa.”

Everyone turned to the elderly woman.

Teresa looked directly at the fiancée.

“Because I saw you trying to sell it to a private jeweler three days ago.”
