Chapter 10 - The Blackmail Vault

The heavy steel door of the deep vault swung open with a slow, grinding screech.

The air inside was freezing, smelling of stale concrete and old copper. A single, harsh halogen bulb swung from the ceiling, casting swinging shadows across the small, windowless room.

Julian Rossi sat strapped to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the floor.

His face was a swollen, bloody mess from where Teresa’s rosary had broken his nose, and his breathing was shallow, his ribs clearly bruised from the fight in the storm drain.

But his eyes were open, and they were filled with venom.

Luca stepped into the room.

He didn’t bring any guards with him. He didn’t bring a weapon. He just carried the black leather briefcase he had pulled from the storm drain.

I stood in the doorway, watching. Luca had insisted I come back to the mansion with him while his top men guarded Isabella at the hospital. He said he needed someone he trusted to witness what was about to happen.

Luca pulled up a metal folding chair and sat down directly in front of his cousin.

He opened the briefcase and pulled out the photograph of Isabella and the federal prosecutor.

He tossed it onto Julian’s lap.

“I know everything, Julian,” Luca said quietly. “I know about the tape from the alley ten years ago. I know you gave it to Richard Vance. I know Isabella sold herself to the feds to keep me out of prison.”

Julian stared at the photo, then let out a wet, rattling laugh.

“So the bitch finally talked,” Julian sneered, spitting a glob of blood onto the concrete floor. “How sweet. A tragic romance right to the end.”

Julian leaned forward against his restraints, his eyes burning with triumphant malice.

“It doesn’t matter that you know, Luca. You’re done. If you kill me, Vance releases the tape, and you spend the rest of your life in Florence ADX. If you don’t kill me, I walk, and I take the legitimate businesses with me. Checkmate, little cousin.”

Luca didn’t flinch. He didn’t yell.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, modern smartphone. He tapped the screen a few times, then held it up so Julian could see it.

It was a live feed of the hospital room. Isabella was sleeping peacefully, Daniel curled up in a chair beside her, while four heavily armed guards stood watch.

“My family is safe,” Luca said softly. “You have nothing to hold over my head anymore, Julian.”

“I have the tape!” Julian shouted, thrashing against the zip-ties. “Vance will ruin you!”

“Vance is a federal prosecutor,” Luca corrected smoothly. “He operates on leverage. He only wants the tape if it leads him to the syndicate ledger. But Isabella doesn’t have the ledger anymore. I do.”

Julian paused, his eyes narrowing.

“You’re bluffing. You don’t even know where she hid it.”

Answer one.

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, wooden knight chess piece I had found on the floor of the master suite.

“She hid it inside this,” Luca said, tossing the wooden horse onto Julian’s lap next to the photo. “Daniel’s favorite toy. She hollowed out the base and slipped a micro-SD card inside before she left eighteen months ago. She knew Daniel would keep it safe, and she knew I would never throw it away.”

Julian stared at the wooden knight, realization dawning in his swollen eyes.

“I already destroyed the drive, Julian,” Luca lied effortlessly, his voice dripping with icy confidence. “Vance has nothing. No ledger. No witness. And without Isabella’s testimony, your ten-year-old security tape is legally inadmissible fruit of a poisoned tree.”

Julian’s face went pale. The arrogant smirk finally melted away, replaced by genuine, suffocating panic.

“You’re lying,” Julian whispered, desperately trying to convince himself. “Vance will still come for you. He hates you.”

“Vance hates losing,” Luca corrected. “And when I call him in ten minutes to explain that his star witness is no longer cooperating, and that his informant was coerced under threat of violence by you… Vance is going to need a new scapegoat to save his career.”

Luca leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, staring directly into Julian’s terrified eyes.

“I’m going to hand you over to the feds, Julian. I’m going to give Vance all the evidence of your embezzlement. The fraud. The wire transfers. I’m going to let him lock you in a federal cage for the rest of your miserable life.”

Julian began to shake, pulling violently at the zip-ties, his bravado entirely shattered.

“No! You can’t! The family council won’t allow it! You can’t turn blood over to the feds!”

“You stopped being blood the moment you threatened my son,” Luca said coldly.

He stood up, kicking the metal chair aside.

“Enjoy the silence, Julian. It’s the last quiet you’re going to get for thirty years.”

Luca turned and walked toward the vault door.

I stepped aside to let him pass, my heart pounding at the sheer, ruthless efficiency of how he had dismantled his cousin’s entire life.

But as Luca reached the doorway, Julian let out a desperate, animalistic scream.

“Wait!”

Luca stopped. He didn’t turn around.

“Wait, Luca! Please!” Julian sobbed, the tough-guy facade completely broken. “I’ll give you whatever you want! Just don’t give me to Vance!”

Luca slowly turned his head.

“You have nothing I want, Julian.”

“I have the real tape!” Julian cried out, tears of panic streaming down his bruised face. “The original security footage! Vance only has a digital copy! I kept the master hard drive to make sure Vance couldn’t double-cross me!”

Open two.

Luca turned fully around, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

“Where is it?”

Julian swallowed hard, hyperventilating.

“If I tell you… you let me walk. You let me leave the country. You give me a plane ticket and a million in cash, and you never see me again.”

Luca stared at him for a long, agonizing moment.

Then, Luca nodded.

“Deal.”

Julian slumped in his chair, relief washing over him.

“It’s in Vanessa’s apartment,” Julian confessed, his voice shaking. “In a safety deposit box hidden behind the bathroom mirror. She doesn’t even know it’s there. I planted it the night you proposed to her.”

Luca looked at me.

“Hannah. Go tell the guards to prep my car. We’re going to Vanessa’s apartment.”

I turned to run up the stairs, but before I could take a step, a massive explosion rocked the mansion.

The entire sub-basement shook, dust showering down from the concrete ceiling.

The alarms instantly began blaring, a deafening shriek that pierced the eardrums.

Luca drew his weapon, spinning toward the stairs.

“Boss!” a guard yelled, running down the steps, his face covered in soot. “We’re under attack! Someone just blew the front gates!”

Luca grabbed the guard’s collar. “Who? Rival family?”

The guard shook his head, his eyes wide with absolute terror.

“No, Boss. It’s the Feds. It’s Richard Vance. He’s raiding the mansion.”
