Chapter 7 - The Labor And The Breach

“The baby is coming!” Olivia sobbed, collapsing onto her knees on the cold concrete floor of the safe room.
Another agonizing contraction ripped through her body, causing her to cry out in sheer, blinding pain. The stress, the terror, the physical exertion of the last hour had pushed her body past its breaking point. Abigail was coming two months early, right in the middle of a mafia war.
Edward struggled to stand from the cot. His legs were weak, trembling violently, but the sheer adrenaline of the moment forced his muscles to obey. He shuffled across the room and dropped painfully to his knees beside her.
“Breathe, Olivia. Look at me, child,” Edward commanded gently, his voice carrying the calm, steady authority of a man who had survived decades of crisis. He grabbed a clean towel from the emergency medical kit on the shelf and placed it under her. “You must breathe.”
“It’s too early, Mr. Edward!” Olivia panicked, tears streaming down her face as she gripped his frail hands tight enough to bruise. “She’s not ready! We don't have a doctor!”
“You don't need a doctor right now, you need to be strong,” Edward said, his eyes fierce and unwavering. “I have delivered two of my own children when the world was against us. You can do this. You are stronger than you know.”
Above them, the heavy, muffled thuds of explosions and gunfire echoed through the ceiling. The mansion was being torn apart.
On the security monitors, the situation in the grand foyer had escalated into a bloodbath. Vincent Lucas’s men were pouring through the shattered front doors. Gabriel and his guards were holding the line behind the marble pillars, but they were heavily outnumbered.
Suddenly, the screen displaying the master study—the room right above the bunker—flickered.
Three men dressed in tactical gear kicked the study doors open. They weren't shooting. They were searching.
And leading them was Marcus.
“He knows about the safe room,” Edward whispered, his blood running cold as he watched the monitor.
On the screen, Marcus walked directly to the stone fireplace. He didn't hesitate. He reached under the mantle and pressed the hidden mechanism. The heavy bookcase swung open, revealing the dark staircase leading down to them.
“They’re coming!” Olivia cried, another contraction tearing through her, leaving her gasping for air.
Edward’s eyes darkened. He let go of Olivia’s hand and forced himself to his feet. He limped over to the heavy steel vault door of the safe room and threw the massive internal locking bolt into place with a heavy, metallic CLANG.
He then walked to a small, locked metal cabinet on the wall. He punched in a four-digit code. The cabinet clicked open, revealing two loaded handguns and a tactical shotgun.
Edward pulled the shotgun from the cabinet. He checked the chamber, his hands moving with practiced, lethal muscle memory.
“Mr. Edward, what are you doing?” Olivia gasped, clutching her stomach.
“Protecting my family,” Edward stated, standing firmly in front of the heavy steel door, aiming the barrel directly at the center of the metal.
A moment later, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone staircase outside the door.
“Open the door, Olivia!” Marcus’s voice shouted through the thick steel, muffled but clear. “I know you’re in there! Give me the brass key, and I’ll let you and the baby live!”
“You’re a liar!” Olivia screamed back, pain and fury warring in her voice. “You used me! You were going to let me die here!”
“Liv, be reasonable!” Marcus yelled, pounding his fist against the steel. “Lucas is going to slaughter Gabriel upstairs! You have no protection! Hand the key under the door gap, and I swear I’ll walk away!”
“She’s not giving you anything, you pathetic coward,” Edward’s raspy, gravelly voice echoed through the steel door.
Silence fell on the other side of the door.
“Edward?” Marcus’s voice wavered, genuine shock bleeding through. “You can speak?”
“I can speak. And I can aim,” Edward said coldly. “Walk away, boy. Or I’ll blow you in half the second this door opens.”
Marcus laughed nervously. “You’re an eighty-year-old cripple, Edward! You can't even stand!”
“Try me.”
“Blow the hinges!” Marcus ordered his men outside.
“They’re setting charges!” Edward warned, backing away from the door. “Olivia, cover your ears!”
Olivia curled into a tight ball on the floor, pressing her hands desperately over her ears as another brutal contraction hit her.
A deafening BOOM shook the entire safe room. The heavy steel door groaned, the hinges warping under the force of the explosive, but the internal locking bolt held. Smoke poured through the cracks, filling the small room with the acrid smell of sulfur.
“Again!” Marcus shouted from the stairs.
They were trapped. Gabriel was fighting for his life upstairs, oblivious to the fact that his father and Olivia were being hunted below.
Suddenly, the security monitor displaying the study flashed brightly.
Gabriel burst into the room. He was covered in dust, his suit jacket torn, holding a submachine gun. He had seen the men breach the study on his tactical feed.
On the monitor, Gabriel didn't hesitate. He opened fire down the hidden staircase.
The sound of gunfire roared from the other side of the steel door. Men screamed. Bodies tumbled down the stone steps, slamming heavily against the metal outside.
“Gabriel!” Olivia cried out, recognizing the distinct sound of his voice shouting commands through the steel.
“Dad! Olivia! Are you hurt?!” Gabriel yelled, banging his fist against the outside of the door.
“We are safe!” Edward shouted back, lowering the shotgun slightly. “But you cannot open the door, Gabriel! The hinges are warped from the blast! The locking bolt is jammed!”
“Stand back!” Gabriel ordered. “I’m cutting through!”
The loud, piercing whine of a plasma torch ignited outside the door. Sparks began flying through the cracks as Gabriel’s men started cutting the heavy steel locking mechanism away.
But inside the room, Olivia let out a blood-curdling scream.
“It’s time!” Olivia sobbed, falling back onto the towel, completely unable to fight her body any longer. “She’s coming right now!”
Edward dropped the shotgun. He fell to his knees beside her, offering his hands.
“Push, Olivia!” Edward commanded, his voice filled with urgent, desperate strength. “You have to push!”
Olivia squeezed her eyes shut, gripping the old man’s hands with everything she had, and pushed with a guttural, agonizing cry that echoed over the deafening sound of the cutting torch.
Sparks flew. Steel groaned.
And then, a tiny, piercing wail shattered the chaos in the room.
Olivia collapsed back onto the floor, panting, completely exhausted.
Edward looked down. Tears of pure, overwhelming joy flooded his old eyes. He gently lifted the tiny, squalling infant, wrapping her quickly in a clean medical blanket from the kit.
“She is beautiful, Olivia,” Edward wept, gently placing the swaddled baby onto Olivia’s chest. “She is perfect.”
Olivia looked down at her daughter. Abigail. She was tiny, fragile, and absolutely perfect. The terror of the siege vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, fierce wave of maternal love.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door sparked one last time and violently gave way, crashing outward onto the stone steps.
Gabriel rushed into the safe room, his gun raised, his chest heaving.
But when he saw the scene on the floor, he froze.
Olivia was lying on the concrete, exhausted and crying, clutching a tiny, wailing baby to her chest. And his father, the ruthless Mafia Don who had been paralyzed for four years, was kneeling beside them, weeping with joy.
Gabriel slowly lowered his weapon. The adrenaline left his body, replaced by a profound, awe-striking reverence.
He walked over and dropped to his knees beside Olivia. He looked at the tiny baby, then at Olivia’s beautiful, exhausted face.
“You did it,” Gabriel whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. He reached out and gently brushed a damp curl away from her forehead. “You’re incredible.”
“Is it over?” Olivia breathed, leaning into his touch.
Gabriel’s expression hardened just slightly. He stood up, looking back at the shattered doorway.
“Marcus is dead,” Gabriel said coldly. “My men handled him on the stairs. But Vincent Lucas is still in the grand foyer. And he’s holding my men hostage.”

Gabriel reached down and picked up the heavy brass key from the floor where it had fallen.
“He wants the key,” Gabriel said, his dark eyes turning lethal. “I’m going to give it to him.”
