Chapter 8 - The Deal And The Deception

“Gabriel, no!” Olivia cried, clutching little Abigail tighter to her chest. “If you give him the key, he’ll have the ledger! He’ll destroy your family!”

Gabriel looked down at her, his expression a mask of hardened resolve, but his eyes were entirely focused on the safety of the woman and child on the floor.

“The ledger doesn't matter anymore, Olivia,” Gabriel said softly, crouching down one last time to look her in the eyes. “The only thing that matters is getting you and this baby out of this house alive. Lucas will execute my men and burn this estate to the ground if I don't hand it over.”

“Son,” Edward warned, his raspy voice filled with desperate pride. “You cannot surrender to that animal.”

“I’m not surrendering, Dad,” Gabriel said, standing up, a dark, calculating glint flashing in his eyes. “I’m negotiating.”

Gabriel turned and walked out of the safe room, stepping over the wreckage of the blown steel door and the lifeless bodies of Marcus’s men on the stairs.

Olivia watched him leave, her heart hammering frantically in her chest. She looked down at Abigail, the tiny, fragile life she had just brought into the world amidst gunfire and explosives. She promised herself, in that exact moment, that if they survived this night, she would never let anyone make her feel helpless again.

Upstairs, the grand foyer of the Rinaldi estate was a war zone.

The crystal chandeliers were shattered, covering the Italian marble floors in millions of glittering shards. The priceless paintings were riddled with bullet holes.

Standing in the center of the foyer was Vincent Lucas. He was a tall, imposing man in his late fifties, wearing a pristine white suit that somehow remained untouched by the violence around him. Flanking him were twenty heavily armed men, their rifles trained on the surviving Rinaldi guards who were forced to their knees, hands behind their heads.

“Gabriel!” Lucas called out smoothly as Gabriel descended the grand staircase alone, his hands empty and raised in a gesture of parley. “I was beginning to think you’d died in the basement like a rat.”

Gabriel stopped at the bottom of the stairs. He didn't look at the guns. He looked directly into Lucas’s eyes.

“You destroyed my home, Vincent,” Gabriel stated, his voice carrying the chilling authority of the Boss.

“You forced my hand,” Lucas sighed dramatically. “I offered you a peaceful buyout three years ago when your father had his... unfortunate medical incident. You refused. I had to pay Caldwell to keep the old man quiet while I looked for the key. But you just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?”

“Marcus is dead,” Gabriel said bluntly. “I shot him on the stairs.”

Lucas’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered. “A shame. He was a useful idiot. But he served his purpose. He distracted you long enough for me to take the house.”

Lucas extended a gloved hand. “The brass key, Gabriel. Hand it over, and I will let you and your surviving men walk out the back door. You have my word as a gentleman.”

Gabriel reached into his suit pocket and pulled out the heavy brass key. It gleamed under the emergency lighting of the foyer.

“This key opens Sal’s private vault at Liberty Trust,” Gabriel said, holding it up. “It contains the Romano Ledger. The names of every corrupt official on our payroll. If you take this, you take the city.”

“I’m aware,” Lucas smirked. “Toss it.”

Gabriel tossed the heavy brass key. It clattered across the marble floor, sliding to a stop directly at Lucas’s polished shoes.

Lucas smiled triumphantly. He bent down and picked up the key, holding it up to the light as if it were a holy relic.

“Finally,” Lucas breathed. He looked at Gabriel, his smile turning cruel. “You know, Gabriel, you really are a disappointment to your father’s legacy. Surrendering the family’s greatest weapon just to save a few guards and a pregnant maid?”

Lucas raised his hand, signaling his men to execute the kneeling Rinaldi guards.

“Kill them all,” Lucas ordered.

But Gabriel didn't flinch. He didn't panic. He just smiled.

“I didn't surrender the family’s greatest weapon, Vincent,” Gabriel said softly. “I just handed you a piece of brass.”

Lucas frowned, looking down at the key.

Suddenly, the deafening wail of police sirens pierced the night air. Red and blue lights flooded through the shattered front doors, blinding the men in the foyer. Dozens of heavily armored SWAT vehicles smashed through the remaining iron gates, surrounding the estate entirely.

Lucas’s men panicked, lowering their weapons and looking wildly toward the exits.

“What is this?!” Lucas roared, spinning toward Gabriel. “You called the Feds?! You broke omertà?!”

“I didn't call the Feds,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a lethal, satisfied register. “I called Liberty Trust Bank.”

Lucas stared at him in confusion.

“When Marcus’s mother confessed to paralyzing my father this morning,” Gabriel explained, taking a slow step forward, “I knew you were behind it. I knew you were looking for the Romano Ledger. So, while my men were locking the gates, I made a phone call to the bank manager. I authorized the immediate transfer of the vault’s contents.”

Gabriel pointed at the brass key in Lucas’s hand.

“That key doesn't open the vault anymore, Vincent,” Gabriel said coldly. “Because the vault is empty. I had the ledger delivered directly to the FBI field office in Manhattan two hours ago. Along with a sworn affidavit detailing your involvement in my uncle’s murder.”

The color drained entirely from Vincent Lucas’s face. The pristine white suit suddenly looked like a shroud.

“You handed the ledger to the Feds?” Lucas gasped in sheer disbelief. “You gave them the names of our own corrupt politicians?! You’ll destroy your own family to take me down?!”

“My family is in the basement,” Gabriel stated fiercely. “And they are safe. I don't care about the politicians. I don't care about the shipping routes. I am cleaning the Rinaldi name, and I’m starting by sending you to federal prison for the rest of your pathetic life.”

“Kill him!” Lucas screamed, raising his own weapon.

But it was too late.

The FBI tactical teams breached the foyer from every entrance, throwing flashbang grenades that exploded with blinding light and deafening noise.

Gabriel dove behind a marble pillar as the SWAT team swarmed the room, screaming for everyone to drop their weapons. Lucas’s men, realizing the war was utterly lost, threw their guns to the floor and surrendered.

Vincent Lucas tried to run, but two federal agents tackled him to the marble, violently clicking handcuffs around his wrists.

The siege was over. The Rinaldi empire was dismantled, and the Lucas syndicate was destroyed.

Gabriel stood up from behind the pillar, dusting the plaster off his torn suit. He looked at the federal agent in charge, who gave him a brief, respectful nod—acknowledging the deal they had struck over the phone hours ago. Total immunity for the Rinaldi family in exchange for the ledger and Vincent Lucas.

Gabriel didn't wait around for the arrests. He turned and sprinted back through the ruined mansion, his heart hammering with desperate anticipation.

He ran down the stone steps into the safe room.

The paramedics had already arrived through the secure tunnels, treating Olivia and wrapping little Abigail in a warm thermal blanket. Edward was sitting on the cot, holding Olivia’s hand, looking exhausted but incredibly peaceful.

Gabriel walked into the room. He looked at Olivia, his eyes completely overwhelmed with emotion.

Olivia looked up at him, a tired, radiant smile spreading across her beautiful face.

“You kept your promise,” Olivia whispered, tears of joy filling her eyes.

May you like

Gabriel dropped to his knees beside the stretcher. He didn't care about the blood, the dirt, or the chaos upstairs. He gently cupped Olivia’s face in his large, calloused hands, and pressed his forehead against hers.

“I will always keep my promises to you,” Gabriel swore, his voice breaking. He looked down at the tiny baby girl sleeping peacefully in Olivia’s arms. “You are safe now. You are finally safe.”
