Chapter 7 - The Secret Daughter

Alessandro unfolded the yellowed paper, his eyes scanning the faded ink through the dim, smoky light of the basement.
He read Emma’s name. He read her mother's name, Margaret Dawson.
And then he saw the line for the father.
Thomas Carbone.
Alessandro froze. The blaring fire alarms and the crackle of flames seemed to fade into a distant hum. He looked up from the paper, his dark eyes locking onto Emma.
"You..." Alessandro breathed, the word catching in his throat. "My father is your father?"
Emma nodded, hugging herself tightly. "I didn't know. I swear to you, Alessandro. I thought my father died before I was born. My mother never told me. I just needed a job to pay for my baby."
Alessandro stared at her. The pregnant maid he had dismissed as just another staff member was his half-sister.
The realization hit him like a physical blow. The reason his father had fought so hard to communicate, the reason Thomas had hidden her birth certificate beneath the floorboards—he knew exactly who she was the moment she walked into his room.
"He knew," Alessandro whispered, a profound sense of awe cutting through his shock. "He was trapped in that wheelchair for four years, and then you walked in. His daughter."
He looked at Emma’s soot-stained face, at her swollen belly. She hadn't just been a maid to Thomas. She had been his salvation.
"We have to go," Emma coughed violently, the smoke finally becoming too thick to breathe.
Alessandro snapped out of his shock. He grabbed the ledger and the locket, shoving them into his jacket pocket.
"The garage," Alessandro ordered, grabbing her hand. "Julian went for the cars. We're getting out of here."
They sprinted down the corridor, leaving the burning boiler room behind. They pushed through the heavy fire doors into the sprawling underground parking garage.
The garage was quiet. The smoke hadn't reached here yet.
But the silence was deceptive.
As they ran toward Alessandro’s black SUV, the blinding high-beams of a massive armored Mercedes SUV suddenly flicked on at the far end of the garage.
The engine roared.
"Get down!" Alessandro yelled, shoving Emma behind a concrete pillar just as the Mercedes accelerated violently toward them.
The armored vehicle clipped the pillar, showering them in concrete dust, before screeching to a halt, blocking the exit ramp.
The driver’s side door opened, and Julian Carbone stepped out.
He was holding a submachine gun.
"I have to admit, Alessandro," Julian echoed through the empty garage, his voice dripping with venom. "You are incredibly hard to kill. But this is where the Carbone line ends."
Alessandro pulled Emma tighter against the pillar. He only had the discarded rifle, and it only had a few rounds left.
"You killed my mother," Alessandro shouted back, his voice vibrating with pure, lethal hatred.
Julian laughed, a dry, cruel sound. "Your mother was a liability. She wanted Thomas to go legitimate. She was going to ruin the empire I helped build. I did what was necessary for the family."
"You did it for yourself!" Alessandro fired back.
"And I’m going to do it again," Julian sneered, raising the weapon. "The old man burns upstairs. You die down here. And I take Manhattan tomorrow."
Julian opened fire.
The bullets chewed through the concrete pillar, sending sharp fragments flying. Emma screamed, covering her head, curling her body tightly around her unborn child.
Alessandro returned fire with the rifle, forcing Julian to duck behind the armored door of his Mercedes.
"Click."
Alessandro’s rifle went empty.
He cursed, throwing the useless weapon aside. They were pinned down. Julian had superior firepower, armor, and the only exit.
Julian laughed from behind the car door. "Out of bullets, nephew? Say hello to your mother for me."
Julian stepped out from behind the door, raising the submachine gun to deliver the final burst.
Suddenly, a deafening roar echoed through the garage.
It wasn't a gunshot. It was the sound of a massive, supercharged engine.
From the dark corner of the garage, a sleek, vintage 1969 Mustang Mach 1—the car Thomas Carbone used to drive before his stroke—barreled out of the shadows.
It didn't slow down. It accelerated with terrifying speed, aimed directly at Julian.
Julian’s eyes widened in horror. He raised his gun to fire at the windshield, but he was too late.
The Mustang slammed violently into the side of the armored Mercedes, crushing Julian between the heavy steel door and the frame of his own car.
The impact echoed like a bomb.
The Mustang stalled, smoke pouring from its crushed hood.
Julian slumped to the concrete floor, his weapon clattering away, completely incapacitated.
Alessandro stared in shock.
The driver’s door of the Mustang slowly groaned open.
And stepping out, leaning heavily on a cane, his silver hair perfectly out of place, was Marco Carbone. Thomas's oldest, most loyal enforcer.

And sitting in the passenger seat, his eyes blazing with the fierce, unyielding pride of a mafia don, was Thomas Carbone.
He had the little brass bell resting on his lap.
