Chapter 10 - The Brass Bell

The heavy steel vault door ground open thirty minutes later, revealing a squad of federal agents and NYPD officers flanking Marco Carbone.
Camilla didn't fight as they placed her in handcuffs. She walked out of the vault with her head held high, clinging to a shattered pride that no one respected anymore. Her empire of lies had collapsed in a single afternoon.
Emma stood by the mahogany desk, feeling the heavy exhaustion of the day finally catch up to her. Her swollen ankles throbbed, and she rested a protective hand on her belly, leaning heavily against the wood.
Alessandro finished speaking with the lead federal agent, handing over the ledgers and the confession Thomas had hidden in the hollowed Bible. He walked over to Emma, his expression softer than she had ever seen it.
"The paramedics are waiting upstairs," Alessandro said gently. "They want to check on you and the baby, just to be safe."
Emma nodded tiredly. "I'm okay. Just... tired."
"You did incredible today, Emma," Alessandro said, his dark eyes filled with genuine admiration. "You saved my father. You saved me. You stood up to Camilla."
He paused, a faint smile touching his lips. "You're definitely a Carbone."
Hearing him say it made Emma’s heart swell. She had grown up without siblings, without a father, believing she was entirely alone in the world. Now, standing in the ruined nerve center of a mafia empire, she had found a family.
A family that was deeply flawed, dangerous, and broken, but fiercely protective.
"Come on," Alessandro said, offering his arm. "Let's get out of this basement."
They took the private elevator up to the penthouse suite of the skyscraper. It was a sprawling, luxurious space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering Manhattan skyline.
Thomas was already there, resting comfortably in a plush leather armchair by the window. The paramedics had checked his vitals and declared him remarkably stable for a man who had survived a fire, a car crash, and a vault lockdown in a single afternoon.
Emma walked over and sat on the edge of the sofa beside his chair.
Thomas looked at her, his eyes warm and crinkling at the corners. He slowly reached into the pocket of his cardigan and pulled out the little brass bell.
He placed it gently on the coffee table between them.
He didn't need it to scream for help anymore. He didn't need it to prove he was alive.
He looked at Emma, then at the bell, and raised one trembling finger.
He pressed it once.
Ding.
Thank you.
Emma smiled, tears pricking her eyes. "You're welcome, Dad."
Saying the word felt strange, heavy, and beautiful all at once. Thomas’s eyes widened slightly, and a profound, peaceful smile spread across his weathered face.
Alessandro walked into the room, holding two glasses of water. He handed one to Emma and sat down on the opposite sofa.
"Julian is in federal custody," Alessandro announced quietly. "He'll spend the rest of his life in a supermax prison, right alongside Camilla. The family... what's left of it... is restructuring. I'm taking us completely legitimate. No more shadows. No more violence."
He looked at his father. "It’s what Mom wanted."
Thomas nodded slowly, a look of deep relief washing over him. The war was finally over.
"And what about you, Emma?" Alessandro asked, turning to his new half-sister. "You can't go back to being a housekeeper. Not ever again."
Emma looked down at her hands. "I don't know. I don't have anywhere else to go. The apartment is gone. The baby is coming soon."
"You belong here," Alessandro said firmly. "With us. You're family, Emma. The penthouse has five bedrooms. You pick one. I'm setting up a trust fund for you and my new niece."
Emma’s breath hitched. "Alessandro, you don't have to do that."
"I do," Alessandro insisted, leaning forward. "My father spent twenty-six years watching you from afar, protecting you the only way he knew how—by staying away. He missed your whole life. We aren't going to miss another second."
Thomas reached out and gently patted Emma’s hand, confirming his son’s words.
Overwhelmed, Emma wiped a tear from her cheek. For the first time in her life, she didn't have to worry about rent, or hospital bills, or where her baby would sleep. She was safe.
"Okay," Emma whispered, a genuine smile breaking across her face. "I'll stay."
The next few weeks passed in a whirlwind of healing and transition.
The Carbone estate in Connecticut was being rebuilt, but the family remained in the Manhattan penthouse. Thomas began intensive physical and speech therapy, the very treatments Julian had denied him for four years.
With proper medical care and the motivation of his newly reunited family, Thomas’s progress was slow but miraculous. He regained more movement in his right arm, and the doctors were optimistic that he might eventually speak again.
Emma spent her days decorating a beautiful nursery overlooking Central Park, filled with soft pinks and greens. She no longer scrubbed floors or carried heavy laundry baskets. She spent her afternoons reading to Thomas, not out of pity, but out of love.
But true peace in the Carbone family was never entirely simple.
One evening, exactly two months after the fire, Emma was sitting in the living room, knitting a small blanket, when the private elevator chimed.
Alessandro walked in. His face was pale, and his jaw was set in a tight, grim line. He was holding a thick, manila envelope.
"Alessandro?" Emma asked, setting her knitting aside. "What's wrong?"
He didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the coffee table and dropped the envelope onto the glass. It hit with a heavy thud.
"The feds raided Julian’s private offshore safety deposit boxes this morning," Alessandro said, his voice hollow. "They found a ledger Julian kept hidden from Camilla."
Emma’s stomach tightened. "What does it say?"
Alessandro looked at her, his dark eyes filled with a terrifying sorrow.
"Julian didn't act alone when he ordered the hit on my mother twenty years ago," Alessandro whispered. "He had a partner inside the family. Someone who helped him plant the bomb."
May you like
He pointed to the envelope. "The name of the man who built the bomb is in there, Emma."
Emma stared at the manila envelope, the air suddenly turning ice-cold in the warm penthouse.
