Chapter 12 - A SEAT AT THE HEAD OF THE TABLE

Six Months Later.

The Philadelphia Santoro Estate was unrecognizable from the night of the engagement dinner.

The heavy, oppressive darkness that used to cling to the mansion was gone. The heavy velvet curtains were pulled back, allowing the bright autumn sunlight to flood the grand foyer.

The armed guards in dark suits had been replaced by a legitimate, discreet security firm.

I stood in the massive kitchen, humming quietly as I sliced fresh strawberries.

I wasn’t wearing a maid’s uniform.

I wore a soft cashmere sweater and fitted jeans.

My left arm was completely healed, leaving only a faint, faded scar near my wrist.

“Mom! Watch this!”

I turned around.

Leo was sitting at the marble kitchen island.

Sitting next to him, helping him build an incredibly complex Lego spaceship, was Julian.

Julian looked healthy. The darkness under his eyes had vanished. He was officially managing the legitimate logistics division of Santoro Freight.

He and Leo had formed an unexpected, tight bond over the last six months. They were like brothers.

“That looks amazing, buddy,” I smiled, setting a bowl of strawberries between them.

Julian grabbed one and threw it into the air, catching it in his mouth.

Leo giggled, trying to do the same, and the strawberry bounced off his nose onto the floor.

Mrs. Walsh walked into the kitchen, carrying a stack of fresh mail.

She swatted Julian’s shoulder lightly with an envelope.

“No throwing food in my kitchen, Mr. Julian. You know better.”

“Sorry, Mrs. Walsh,” Julian grinned, entirely unrepentant.

I wiped my hands on a towel and walked out into the main hallway.

The sounds of construction echoed from the east wing. Marco was having the old cellar converted into a massive indoor playroom for Leo.

I walked into Marco’s private study.

The door was open.

Marco was sitting behind his mahogany desk, signing a stack of legal documents.

He wore a crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He looked powerful, but relaxed. The heavy burden of a criminal empire was no longer crushing his shoulders.

He looked up as I walked in, and a warm, genuine smile transformed his face.

“Hey.”

“Hey yourself,” I said, walking around the desk and leaning against his chair.

“Productive morning?”

“Very,” Marco said, capping his expensive pen.

“The final transfer went through. The last of the old 'unregulated' businesses have been sold off or dissolved. Santoro Holdings is one hundred percent legitimate. The feds have officially closed their investigation.”

I exhaled a deep breath of relief.

“It’s over.”

“It’s over,” Marco agreed.

He reached out and pulled me onto his lap.

I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck.

“You know, Mrs. Walsh is right outside,” I teased.

“Mrs. Walsh works for me,” Marco smiled, his hands resting gently on my waist.

“Actually, she works for you now. I formally promoted you to estate manager.”

I rolled my eyes. “I don’t want a title, Marco.”

“Good,” he said, his voice dropping to a softer, more serious tone.

“Because I have a different title in mind for you.”

My breath hitched.

I looked into his dark eyes. There were no secrets left between us. The ghosts of Elena and David had been laid to rest. Lorenzo and Marcus were serving life sentences in federal prison.

Marco reached into his desk drawer.

He didn’t pull out a key, or a gun, or a file.

He pulled out a small, navy-blue velvet box.

He opened it.

Inside sat a breathtaking, elegant diamond ring. It wasn’t gaudy or ostentatious like the one Sabrina had worn. It was antique, beautiful, and completely unique.

“I don’t want you to just manage this house, Tessa,” Marco whispered, his eyes never leaving mine.

“I want you to own it with me. I want to build a life where Leo never has to worry about his safety, and where you never have to carry the weight of the world by yourself.”

Tears welled in my eyes.

“Marco...”

“Marry me,” he said simply.

“Take a seat at the head of the table.”

I looked at the ring, then at the man who had torn down his own empire to protect my son.

I didn’t hesitate.

“Yes,” I whispered, pressing my forehead against his. “Yes.”

Marco slipped the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

He kissed me, a deep, lingering promise of a future without fear.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the kitchen, followed by Julian’s panicked voice.

“Mrs. Walsh! It was Leo’s fault, I swear!”

“Julian Santoro, you clean that up this instant!” Mrs. Walsh scolded.

Marco pulled back, laughing softly against my lips.

“It’s going to be a loud house.”

May you like

I smiled, looking at the beautiful ring on my finger.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
