Chapter 7 - THE EMPIRE FALLS

“Don’t do it, Dante!” Carmine yelled, trying to stand up.

One of Victor’s men violently shoved Carmine back into his chair with the butt of a pistol.

The old man gasped, blood trickling down his chin.

Dante didn’t flinch.

He uncapped the heavy fountain pen.

He looked at Victor Thorne.

“If I sign this, you leave my family alone. Forever.”

“You have my word,” Victor smiled, adjusting his silk tie.

Dante looked down at the document.

The Caruso empire. The blood money. The legacy of violence that had cost him his brother and almost cost him his nephew.

It was poison.

And he was finally ready to let it go.

Dante pressed the pen to the paper.

He signed his name in bold, fluid strokes.

He threw the pen onto the table.

“It’s yours. Now get out of my house.”

Victor picked up the deed, inspecting the signature with profound satisfaction.

He folded it neatly and slid it into his breast pocket.

“A wise decision, Dante. You always were smarter than your father.”

Victor turned to his men.

“We’re leaving.”

He looked at Camille, who was standing frozen near the wall.

“Come along, Camille. You still have uses.”

Camille scrambled forward, eager to escape the wrath of the men she had just ruined.

As Victor and his armed guards backed toward the foyer, the heavy oak doors suddenly swung open.

Standing in the doorway was a little boy.

Five years old. Dark hair. Holding a small stuffed bear.

Leo.

Behind him stood three heavily armed Chicago Police SWAT officers.

Victor froze.

From behind the SWAT officers, a man in a sharp gray suit stepped into the dining room.

He held up a gold FBI badge.

“Victor Thorne. You’re under arrest for racketeering, extortion, and the murder of Daniel Caruso.”

Victor’s eyes darted around the room. His men lowered their weapons instantly, realizing they were completely outgunned by the tactical team flooding the foyer.

“You set me up,” Victor hissed, staring at Dante.

Dante stood up slowly.

He walked over to the table and picked up the silver money clip his father had thrown earlier.

He held it up.

“My brother was wearing a wire the night he died, Victor. But he didn’t give it to the feds. He mailed the recordings to me. I’ve spent the last six years building a federal case against you.”

Victor’s arrogant mask shattered.

“The deed...”

“Is worthless,” Dante said coldly. “You can’t seize assets that have already been surrendered to the federal government. I handed over the empire this morning. You just signed a confession to extortion.”

FBI agents rushed the room, slamming Victor against the wall and cuffing his hands.

Camille screamed as an officer grabbed her arms, dragging her toward the door.

“Dante, please! I didn’t know! I’m sorry!”

Dante didn’t even look at her.

He turned his back as she was pulled out of the mansion.

Then, Dante turned to his father.

Carmine sat in his chair, defeated, bleeding, and entirely broken.

“You gave it all away,” Carmine whispered.

“I bought our freedom,” Dante corrected.

He looked at the FBI agent. “He’s all yours.”

Agents pulled Carmine to his feet. The old boss didn’t fight. He just walked out, the ghost of an empire trailing behind him.

The dining room was suddenly quiet.

The remaining guests had been ushered out by the police.

Only Dante, Marco, Sarah, Leo, and I remained.

Sarah scrambled out from under the serving cart and ran across the room.

“Leo!”

She dropped to her knees, pulling her son into a fierce, desperate embrace.

The little boy hugged her back, burying his face in her neck.

Dante walked over to them.

He knelt down in his expensive suit, getting eye level with the nephew he had never known.

Leo looked up at the tall, intimidating man.

Dante reached out, his hand trembling slightly, and gently touched the boy’s cheek.

“You’re safe now, Leo,” Dante said softly, his voice thick with emotion.

He looked at Sarah.

May you like

“You’re both safe. You’re family. And no one will ever hurt you again.”
