Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE LOCKET

The silence in the dining room was suffocating.
Luca stared at the gold locket in my trembling hands, the color draining from his face. Five years ago, I had slipped on the icy marble steps of our estate. That was the story we had told the doctors. That was the story we had told the family.
But as I looked at the locket, a wave of sheer terror washed over me.
“Open it,” Nonna Gabriella commanded, her voice cutting through the tension.
My fingers fumbled with the tiny clasp. The hinge was stiff, rusted with time and neglect. When it finally snapped open, a tiny, folded piece of photo paper fell into my palm.
I unfolded it.
It wasn't a baby picture. It was a grainy security camera still, stamped with a date and time from five years ago.
It showed the top of the staircase. It showed me falling.
And it showed Vanessa standing at the top of the stairs, her arm outstretched.
She hadn't just been a guest that night. She had pushed me.
“No,” Luca breathed, stepping back as he looked over my shoulder at the photograph. The mafia boss, a man who had faced down rival syndicates without flinching, looked completely broken. “No, Emma... you said you slipped.”
“I didn't remember!” I sobbed, the repressed trauma crashing into me like a physical blow. “I hit my head. The doctors said it was amnesia from the concussion. I truly thought I slipped.”
Nonna Gabriella swayed, clutching the edge of the mahogany table for support. “You murdered my great-grandchild.”
Vanessa didn't look panicked. In fact, she looked vindicated.
“It was an accident,” Vanessa said coldly. “I meant to scare her. To show her she didn't belong in this world. But she fell. And when I found the locket she dropped in the driveway, I kept it. A little insurance policy.”
“Insurance?” Luca’s voice was a lethal whisper. He moved toward her, his hands curling into fists. “You killed my child, and you thought you could stand beside me in a family photograph?”
Vanessa stood her ground. “Your father promised me to you before he died, Luca! Emma stole my place. I was just taking it back. And you were more than happy to let me in last Thursday night.”
The reminder struck me like a knife.
“You slept with her?” I asked Luca, my voice breaking. “After everything we built?”
Luca stopped. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, frantic need for me to understand. “Emma, I didn't sleep with her. I swear on my life.”
Vanessa laughed out loud. “Oh, really? Then why was I in your private study at two in the morning while your wife was upstairs? Why did your grandmother see me leaving with my hair down and my coat unbuttoned?”
I looked at Nonna Gabriella. She nodded slowly, her expression grim.
“He was covering for someone,” a new voice said.
Everyone turned.
My younger brother, Leo, stood in the doorway. He was twenty-two, still in college, and supposed to be entirely kept out of the family business.

But he was holding a heavy, blood-stained winter coat.
“Luca wasn't sleeping with Vanessa,” Leo said, his voice shaking as he dropped the coat onto the immaculate rug. “He was making a deal with her to keep me out of prison.”
