Chapter 5 - THE TIDE TURNS

Vanessa stared at the pearls in my hand, her confidence shattering like fragile glass.
“You... you switched them?” she stammered.
“Did you really think I wouldn't notice you sneaking into my grandmother’s private quarters?” I asked, my voice steady, though my heart was hammering against my ribs. “I may have stepped out of the photograph tonight, Vanessa, but I never stopped watching over this house.”
Nonna Gabriella let out a breath she seemed to have been holding for decades. She walked toward me, her eyes shining with tears, and took the pearls. She didn't put them on. Instead, she pressed them firmly into my hand.
“They belong to you now, Emma,” Gabriella said softly. “You are the protector of this family.”
Luca watched me, a profound look of awe and deep regret crossing his face.
Vanessa backed toward the front door, realizing she had lost her leverage. Her blackmail material was in Luca’s pocket, her stolen trophy was in my hand, and twenty-five members of the mafia family were staring at her with lethal intent.
“This isn't over,” Vanessa hissed, grabbing her coat. “My family will go to war over this, Luca. You’ve insulted us.”
“There will be no war,” Luca said calmly. He pulled out his phone. “Because your uncle just called me an hour ago. He reviewed the security footage of your cousin’s fight with Leo. Your cousin pulled the knife first. It was self-defense. Your uncle agreed to drop the matter, provided I paid a heavy tax to his territory.”
Vanessa froze. “My uncle made a deal without me?”
“You're a liability, Vanessa,” Luca said coldly. “You blackmailed a Don. You caused the death of an unborn child. Your uncle disowned you twenty minutes ago to save his own skin.”
Vanessa looked around the room, realizing she was entirely, utterly alone. She turned and ran out the front door, the heavy oak slamming shut behind her.
The silence that followed was heavy, filled with years of unspoken secrets and fresh wounds.
Rebecca was weeping softly, holding Mia. Leo was staring at his shoes, ashamed.
Luca slowly walked toward me. He stopped a few feet away, as if he didn't feel worthy to touch me.
“Emma,” he whispered. “I am so sorry. I should have trusted you. I should have told you about Leo. I thought I was protecting you, but I only broke your heart.”
I looked at the man I had loved for eight years. The man who had taken the weight of the world on his shoulders to save my brother. But the pain of being publicly humiliated, of believing he had betrayed our marriage, couldn't vanish instantly.
“You made me feel like I was nothing, Luca,” I said softly.
“You are everything,” he pleaded, tears finally spilling from his dark eyes. He dropped to his knees right there in the dining room, in front of his grandmother, his soldiers, and my family. He took my hand and pressed it to his forehead. “Please, Emma. Tell me how to fix this. Tell me how to earn you back.”
I looked down at him, my heart aching.
Nonna Gabriella gently touched my shoulder. “Healing takes time, mia cara. But a man who falls to his knees for his wife is a man who knows her true worth.”
I squeezed Luca’s hand. “It’s going to take time, Luca. A lot of time. No more secrets. Never again.”
He looked up at me, his eyes filled with fierce devotion. “Never again. I swear it on my life.”
I nodded slowly, pulling him to his feet. We had survived the darkest night of our marriage, and though the road ahead was long, we were finally walking it together.
I turned to the photographer, who was standing frozen in the corner, holding his camera.
“You can set up the shot now,” I said softly.
The photographer blinked. “Yes, ma'am. Where should I position everyone?”
Luca put his arm firmly around my waist, pulling me to the absolute center of the room, right beneath the crystal chandelier.
May you like
“Right here,” Luca said, his voice echoing with absolute certainty. “My wife stands in the center. Because without her, there is no family.”
