THE WIFE WHO BOUGHT A GRAVE / Chapter 7 / 11

Chapter 8 - THE KING IN CHAINS

Rocco didn't look like a defeated man. He looked like a cornered lion.

He was handcuffed in the front, his expensive suit torn, blood dripping from a cut above his eye. But his grip on the heavy revolver—which he had clearly taken from a downed guard—was entirely steady.

"Rocco," Elena gasped, her elegant facade cracking for the first time. "You... the FBI took you to the holding facility."

"The agents you bought took me," Rocco growled, stepping slowly into the dining room. "But you forgot one thing, Elena. I built this city before you ever wrote a check. They got me as far as the loading dock before my men intercepted the convoy."

Answer one: Rocco wasn't finished. Silas had assumed Rocco was defeated, but Rocco's loyalty among his ground-level soldiers was stronger than Elena's money.

The remaining tactical guard swung his rifle toward Rocco.

Before he could pull the trigger, Marco fired twice. The guard collapsed, dead before he hit the floor.

Elena screamed, backing away from the table, her white trench coat now spattered with blood.

Rocco walked up to the table. He looked at the ashes of the marriage certificate. Then he looked at Elena.

"You burned it," Rocco said quietly.

"You're a fool, Rocco," Elena spat, trying to regain her composure. "Without me, your political protection is gone. The DA will tear your empire to shreds. You need me!"

"I never needed you," Rocco said, raising the revolver and pointing it directly at her chest. "I tolerated you. Because you made the business run smooth. But you threatened my son. You threatened Rosa."

Open two: If Rocco is defending Rosa now, why did he order Silas to kill her earlier?

"Wait," I said, stepping forward, my voice echoing in the tense room. "Rocco. If you're protecting Rosa... why did Marco find Elena's burner phone in your office? Why did Silas say you ordered the hit?"

Rocco frowned, glancing at me without lowering his gun. "I didn't order Silas to do anything. I sent him to secure the perimeter."

Marco stepped up beside me. "Silas confessed on the phone, Dad. He said you gave the order."

Elena began to laugh. A high, cold, hysterical sound.

"Oh, you stupid boys," Elena mocked, looking between Rocco and Marco. "Silas wasn't working for me. And he wasn't working for you, Rocco."

She pointed a manicured finger at the microfiche resting on the table.

"Silas works for the man whose name is on those accounts," Elena said. "My brother. The man who actually controls the money. Silas planted my burner phone in Rocco's office to frame me, so you two would tear each other apart while my brother liquidated the trust."

My stomach plummeted. Silas was playing everyone.

"It doesn't matter," Rocco said, cocking the hammer of the revolver. "Your brother is next. But you die right now."

"No!"

The scream came from the front entrance of the restaurant.

We all turned.

Standing in the doorway, supported by my mother, was Rosa. She had refused to stay in the car.

"Rosa," Rocco breathed. His hands, which hadn't shaken while holding a gun on his wife, suddenly trembled.

Rosa walked slowly into the dining room, ignoring the bodies, ignoring the blood. She walked straight up to Rocco. She looked at the old, brutal man he had become.

"Do not kill her, Rocco," Rosa said, her voice filled with a quiet, undeniable authority.

"She took thirty years from us, Rosa," Rocco pleaded, tears welling in his hard eyes. "She took my boy."

"And if you shoot her," Rosa said softly, touching Rocco's handcuffed wrists, "you spend the rest of your life in a cage. I did not hide in the dark for thirty years just to watch the father of my child die in a prison cell."

Rocco stared at her, the fight completely draining from his body. Slowly, he lowered the gun.

"Take the microfiche, Marco," Rosa ordered her son. "Give it to the DA. Let the law take her."

Marco moved to the table to grab the microfiche.

But as his hand reached out, Elena made her final, desperate move.

She lunged across the table, not for the microfiche, but for a steak knife left behind from the ruined dinner service. With terrifying speed, she slashed the blade directly toward Rosa's throat.

Rocco roared, throwing his body in front of Rosa.

The blade sank deep into Rocco’s shoulder. He grunted, falling backward, taking Rosa to the floor with him.

Marco didn't hesitate. He raised his gun and fired a single shot.

Elena DeLuca collapsed onto the glass-covered floor, her pristine white coat blooming with a rapidly spreading red stain. She stared at the ceiling, her eyes wide, and then stopped moving entirely.

The restaurant was dead silent.

Marco dropped his gun, rushing to his father's side. "Dad! Dad, look at me."

Rocco was bleeding heavily, but he was conscious. He looked past Marco, his eyes finding Rosa, who was clutching his bleeding shoulder, weeping.

"I'm sorry, Rosa," Rocco whispered, his voice weak. "I'm so sorry."

"Shh," Rosa cried, pressing her scarred hand against his wound. "You are forgiven, you stubborn old man. You are forgiven."

I stood beside my mother, holding her hand, watching a fractured, broken family finally stitch themselves back together on the floor of a ruined restaurant.
