Chapter 6 - THE GHOSTS COME HOME

Men in tactical gear flooded the foyer, sweeping into the ballroom with rifles raised.
But they weren't wearing Moretti colors.
They were wearing federal windbreakers. FBI.
Celeste stumbled backward, hitting the glass window.
A tall man in a dark overcoat walked in behind the federal agents. He looked at Marco, then at Frank.
"Good evening, Frank," the federal agent said. "The audio feed was crystal clear. We have the confession on the Carlo homicide, the forgery, and the wire fraud."
Marco stared at his father. "You went to the feds?"
"I made a deal," Frank said, placing a heavy hand on Marco’s shoulder. "I gave them the Moretti syndicate. Everything. The offshore accounts, the port routes, the safe deposit boxes. In exchange, they wipe the slate clean for you, Marco. Full immunity."
Marco looked devastated. "You gave up our secrets to save me?"
"I gave up a war," Frank corrected gently. "A war that killed my wife. A war that killed your best friend. A war that chased my daughter away for seven years. I'm ending it tonight."
Outside, the Moretti men who had driven up the driveway were already in handcuffs, surrounded by federal tactical teams. It had been a trap. Frank had lured them all to the estate under the guise of the engagement dinner.
Two agents moved toward Celeste.
She fought them, kicking and screaming as they locked the handcuffs around her wrists.
"You're nothing!" Celeste screamed at Marco as they dragged her past him. "You're weak!"
Marco didn't even look at her. He reached out and gently plucked the gold mockingbird pin from her fingers before she could take it with her.
"Take the doctor, too," the lead agent ordered.
Dr. Harris didn't fight. He just hung his head and let them walk him out.
The ballroom suddenly felt massive. The guests were gone. The threat was gone.
It was just Marco, Frank, Elena, Leo, and me.
Marco stood in the center of the room, looking at the mockingbird pin in his hand. He looked like a man who had been carrying a mountain on his back for twenty years and had just realized he could set it down.
He turned to his sister.
Elena stepped out from behind the bar.
Marco walked slowly toward her. He stopped two feet away.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then, Marco dropped to his knees.
He didn't kneel to Elena. He kneeled in front of the six-year-old boy.
"Hello, Leo," Marco said softly, his voice thick with tears.
Leo looked at him cautiously. "Are you the bad man Mommy ran away from?"
Marco closed his eyes. A single tear escaped. "I was. But I promise you, I'm never going to be a bad man again."
Marco looked up at Elena. "I'm so sorry. I should have trusted Carlo. I should have trusted you."
Elena knelt down beside him. She wrapped her arms around her brother’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder.
"We're home, Marco," she whispered. "We're finally home."
From across the room, Frank watched his children embrace. He reached out and took my hand. His grip was incredibly strong.
"You did good, Natalie," Frank said. "You brought me downstairs."
I smiled, wiping my own tears. "I think you would have found your way down anyway, Mr. DeLuca."
Suddenly, Marco stood up. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the micro-SD card Elena had brought him. The footage from Boston.
"Wait," Marco said, looking at the tiny plastic square. "If Celeste just confessed to everything... then what is actually on this video card?"
Elena wiped her eyes and looked at the card.
May you like
She offered a small, mysterious smile.
"That," Elena said, "is a message from Carlo. For you."
