Chapter 8 - The End Of The Debt

The sound of Luca’s gun was precise. One shot.

Dominic froze. The cruel, arrogant twist of his mouth went slack. He looked down at his chest, where a dark stain was rapidly spreading across his ruined wool coat.

He dropped the gun. It hit the wet pavement with a heavy clatter.

Then Dominic’s knees buckled, and he collapsed onto the driveway. He didn’t move again.

The remaining guards, seeing their boss dead on the gravel, immediately dropped their weapons and raised their hands. Marco and the security team swarmed them, pushing them to the ground and securing the perimeter.

The silence that followed was absolute.

I stayed crouched behind the shattered planter, my breath coming in ragged, painful gasps.

Luca didn’t look at Dominic’s body. He holstered his weapon, walked straight to the third SUV, and knelt in the rain.

Maria was sobbing, rocking the little boy in her arms.

Luca reached out. His hands, which had just taken a life with brutal efficiency, were trembling as he gently touched the little boy’s curly hair.

“Leo,” Luca whispered.

The little boy looked up. He had dark eyes. Luca’s eyes. Sofia’s eyes.

Leo reached out a small, hesitant hand and touched Luca’s wet face. Luca closed his eyes, a single tear mixing with the rain, and pulled his nephew into his arms.

I watched them, the tight knot of terror in my chest finally beginning to loosen.

Then I remembered.

I stood up, my legs shaking, and walked over to Dominic’s body. I didn’t look at his face. I knelt down and reached into the deep pocket of his coat.

My fingers brushed against smooth, worn leather.

I pulled it out.

The green ledger. My father’s insurance policy. It was damp from the rain, but intact. I held it tightly against my chest, feeling a sudden, overwhelming wave of grief for the father who had carried this burden for so long.

“Emma.”

I turned. Vanessa was sitting on the gravel, clutching her side. Her red silk dress was ruined, soaked with mud and water. She looked exhausted, broken, but incredibly lucid.

I walked over to her and offered my hand.

She looked at it for a moment, then let me pull her to her feet.

“You saved my life,” I said softly.

Vanessa wiped a streak of mud from her face. “You saved Luca’s. We’re even, maid.”

Despite everything, a small, tired smile touched my lips. “It’s Emma.”

Vanessa nodded slowly. “Emma.”

Luca walked over to us, carrying Leo in his arms. He looked at Vanessa.

“Why?” Luca asked. “Why did you jump him?”

Vanessa looked at Luca, her eyes full of a complicated, painful truth. “Because I loved you, Luca. But I knew you never loved me. Not really. You were marrying me to secure the alliance with my family. And I was marrying you because I thought I could control you.”

She looked down at the muddy ground. “I tampered with Dominic’s car today because he threatened to kill you. But I cut the brake line on your car tonight because I wanted to trap you at the house. I wanted you hurt just enough that you’d need me to take care of you.”

She looked back up, her eyes clear. “I was toxic for you, Luca. And you were toxic for me. We’re done.”

Luca looked at her for a long time. Then he nodded. “Marco will have a car take you to your family’s compound. Safely.”

Vanessa turned and walked away, her ruined red dress trailing behind her in the rain.

Luca turned to me. He looked at the green ledger clutched in my arms.

“It’s over, Emma,” he said softly. “The debt is paid. Dominic is gone. Your family is safe.”

He shifted Leo in his arms. The little boy had rested his head on Luca’s shoulder and closed his eyes.

“Come inside,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a warm, gentle register I had never heard before. “You’re freezing.”

I looked at the imposing marble mansion. An hour ago, it had been a prison. Now, somehow, it felt like something else.

May you like

I nodded, and we walked through the shattered front doors together.
