Chapter 7 - The Bullet And The Promise

Luca didn't go back through the tunnel. He kicked the metal grate straight up from below.

The heavy iron flew into the air with a deafening crash, landing inches from Marcus’s feet.

Marcus jumped back, momentarily distracted.

Luca lunged up through the opening like a predator, grabbing the edge of the concrete and hauling his massive frame onto the warehouse floor in one fluid motion.

“Luca!” Vanessa screamed, aiming her shaking gun at him.

“Drop it, Marcus!” Luca roared, aiming his pistol directly at his former head of security.

Marcus recovered quickly. He grabbed Teresa’s chair and pulled her in front of him, pressing the barrel of his gun to the old woman’s temple.

“Put the gun down, Boss,” Marcus sneered. “Or your aunt’s brains paint the floor.”

Teresa didn’t flinch. “Shoot him, Luca! Don’t worry about me!”

“Shut up, old woman,” Marcus barked. He looked at Luca. “Where is the watch?”

I was still in the tunnel, hidden in the shadows beneath their feet, clutching the heavy gold watch against my chest. My heart was beating so loud I was sure they could hear it.

“Grab Teresa,” Luca had told me.

I had to move.

“I don’t have the watch,” Luca lied, stepping to the left, drawing Marcus and Vanessa’s attention away from the open grate in the floor. “I left it at the house.”

“You’re lying!” Vanessa shrieked. “I told you to bring it!”

“Why do you even want it, Marcus?” Luca asked, keeping his voice dangerously calm. “Vanessa’s father killed mine. I understand why she wants the evidence gone. But what’s your stake in this?”

Marcus laughed. It was a cold, ugly sound.

“You really think this stupid girl orchestrated a thirty-year con?” Marcus asked, nodding toward Vanessa. “Her father was a thug. A hired gun. He pulled the trigger, yes. But he didn’t order the hit.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed. “Who did?”

“My father did,” Marcus said proudly. “Your old man was getting weak. He wanted to take the family business legitimate. My father wasn’t going to let that happen. He ordered the hit, and he paid Vanessa’s trashy dad with that gold watch.”

Vanessa stared at Marcus in shock. “You… you used me?”

“Of course I used you,” Marcus laughed. “You were the perfect pawn. A pretty face to distract the young boss while I robbed him blind from the inside.”

While Marcus was gloating, I silently climbed up the edge of the grate hole. I crawled on my stomach, staying completely flat behind the wooden crates stacked near Teresa’s chair.

“So now what?” Luca asked, stalling for time. “You kill us both and take over?”

“Exactly,” Marcus said. He pushed Teresa away and raised his gun toward Luca.

I didn’t think. I acted.

I lunged from behind the crates and slammed my shoulder into the back of Marcus’s knees.

It wasn’t a strong hit, but it was completely unexpected.

Marcus’s legs buckled. He stumbled forward with a shout of surprise.

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the massive warehouse.

I screamed and squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the burning pain.

But the pain never came.

I opened my eyes.

Marcus was on the ground, clutching his shoulder, blood seeping through his dark suit jacket.

Luca stood above him, his gun still raised, smoke curling from the barrel.

He had shot Marcus the second the man stumbled.

Vanessa shrieked and dropped her gun, throwing her hands in the air, backing away toward the door.

“Don’t move,” Luca commanded, turning his weapon toward her.

Vanessa froze, sobbing hysterically.

I scrambled to my feet and rushed to Teresa. I desperately untied the thick ropes binding her wrists.

“Emma,” Teresa breathed, her hands shaking as she touched my face. “You brave, brave girl.”

“Are you hurt?” I asked, tears finally spilling down my cheeks.

“I’m perfectly fine,” she said, though she looked exhausted.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second.

Luca looked at me, lowering his gun slightly. “I told you to stay in the tunnel.”

“I don’t take orders well,” I said, wiping my face.

Luca smiled. It was the first real, genuine smile I had ever seen on his face.

“Thank God for that,” he said.

The warehouse doors burst open, and heavily armed police officers flooded the room. Teresa had managed to send an SOS text from her smartwatch to the police chief before Vanessa had taken her phone.

Officers roughly handcuffed a screaming Vanessa and a groaning Marcus.

As they dragged Vanessa past me, she stopped and glared at me with pure hatred.

“You think you won?” she spat. “You’re just a maid! You’re nothing!”

Before I could respond, Luca stepped forward.

“She is the woman who saved my family,” Luca said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “And if you ever speak to her again, I’ll make sure you never see daylight.”

Vanessa went pale. The officers pulled her away.

Luca walked over to me. The warehouse was chaotic with police radios and flashing red and blue lights, but right then, it felt like it was just the two of us.

He reached out and gently brushed a smudge of dirt from my cheek.

“Where is Leo?” he asked softly.

“Safe in the car,” I replied.

Luca nodded. Then, he looked down at my hand. I was still clutching the gold pocket watch.

He gently took it from my fingers.

“My father’s legacy was violence and secrets,” Luca said quietly. “But your father… your father risked everything to hide the truth and protect a child.”

He handed the watch back to me.

“Keep it,” Luca said.

“Luca, no, this is your family’s—”

“My family is changing,” Luca interrupted. He looked at Teresa, who was smiling warmly at us from her chair. Then he looked back at me.

“Come on,” he said, offering his hand. “Let’s go pick up our boy.”

I looked at his outstretched hand.

Then, from the pocket of my apron, I felt the heavy silver of my mother’s bracelet.

May you like

I placed my hand in his.
