Chapter 9 - The Traitor in the Ranks

The rain washed over the photograph in Luca’s hand, but the license plate was unmistakable.

Gino.

The man currently sitting in the SUV parked outside the clinic. The man who had driven them here.

Luca tucked the photo into his pocket, his face hardening.

The nightmare wasn’t over. But for tonight, the bleeding stopped.

Luca carried Martha down the stairs. Sophie walked beside him, holding Leo’s hand.

When they reached the lobby, police sirens were wailing in the distance.

Luca bypassed the front doors, leading them out the side exit into the alley. He wasn’t about to get into Gino’s SUV.

He made a call to a trusted loyalist. Within ten minutes, a sleek armored town car pulled into the alley, driven by a man Luca had known since childhood.

They drove to a secure penthouse Luca owned downtown, a place no one in his family knew about.

It was over.

The truth was out.

Vanessa was arrested the next morning by federal agents tipped off by Luca’s lawyers. She would face charges for extortion, kidnapping, and conspiracy. The bonds in Leo’s coat were surrendered to the authorities, closing Romanov’s hunt. Arthur Bellini was handed over to the police, singing like a canary for a plea deal.

Dmitri Romanov, furious but pragmatic, cut his losses and vanished back into the underworld, realizing Luca Moretti was not a man to cross.

Inside the warm, sunlit penthouse, the nightmare finally faded.

Martha was settled into a luxury medical bed in the master suite, attended by a private, top-tier physician Luca had hired. For the first time in years, she looked rested. She looked safe.

In the living room, Leo was sitting on a plush rug, building a massive tower out of wooden blocks. He was wearing clean clothes and eating a slice of chocolate cake.

Sophie stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the Chicago skyline. She wasn’t wearing a maid’s uniform anymore. She wore a soft cream sweater and jeans Luca had ordered for her.

Her bandaged arm was resting in a proper sling.

Luca walked up beside her, handing her a mug of tea.

“How is she?” he asked quietly.

“Sleeping,” Sophie smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that made Luca’s chest tighten. “The doctor said with proper therapy, she might walk again with a cane.”

“She’ll get the best therapy in the country. I’ve already paid for the next five years.”

Sophie looked at him, her eyes shining. “Luca... you didn’t have to do that.”

“I wanted to.”

He looked down at Leo, who was happily humming as he stacked blocks.

“He’s not Michael’s son,” Luca said softly. “But he’s a good kid. I’ve spoken to my lawyers. I’m adopting him. He’ll never see a clinic or a cartel ever again. He’ll be a Moretti.”

Sophie gasped, tears of joy spilling over her cheeks. “You’re giving him a family.”

“We both are,” Luca corrected gently.

He reached out, his fingers lightly touching her cheek.

“You saved my life, Sophie. You saved my mother. You saved my nephew.” Luca’s dark eyes locked onto hers. “You don’t have any debts anymore. You’re free. But I’m hoping you won’t leave.”

Sophie leaned into his touch.

“I’m not going anywhere,” she whispered.

They stood together in the sunlight, the trauma of the past twenty-four hours melting away into the promise of a new life. Dignity restored. A family forged in fire.

A happy ending.

Until Leo suddenly stood up.

“Mr. Luca?” the boy asked, walking over with a piece of paper in his hand. “I found this in the pocket of the blue coat. The one Mommy made me wear.”

Luca smiled, kneeling down to the boy’s level. “What is it, buddy?”

Leo handed him a folded piece of heavy parchment.

“Mommy said if she died, I had to give this to the police.”

Luca unfolded the paper.

It wasn’t a drawing. It was a bank transfer receipt from nine years ago.

A payment of one million dollars.

The sender was Vanessa Bellini.

The recipient account name made Luca’s heart stop beating.

It was Eleanor Moretti.

His own mother.

Luca stared at the paper, the world tilting beneath his feet.

His mother hadn’t been a victim of Arthur’s poison. She had paid Vanessa a million dollars nine years ago.

“Luca?” Sophie asked, seeing his face turn ashen. “What’s wrong?”

Luca looked up.

“My mother,” he whispered. “She paid Vanessa to ruin Michael’s wedding.”
