Chapter 5 - THE UNCLE WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Samuel Mercer lived in Bedford.

Not Switzerland.

Not Zurich.

Not anywhere he had claimed for five years.

A ten-acre property under a trust named Rosemont Agricultural Holdings.

No Mercer name.

No obvious connection.

Marco found it by tracking the old Mercedes through toll cameras.

Luke stared at the map.

“Five years.”

Victoria sat nearby.

“She knew?”

Luke asked.

“Who?”

“Did Mom know Samuel was here?”

Victoria shook her head.

“I thought he left after your father died.”

“Why?”

“He said he was tired of the family.”

Luke laughed bitterly.

“Apparently Mercer men only disappear when they’re hiding something.”

Elena remained hospitalized.

Luke refused to leave without telling her.

She did not ask him to stay.

That hurt.

But she did say:

“Don’t go alone.”

He almost smiled.

“I never do.”

“Marco counts as alone with better tailoring.”

Marco, from the doorway:

“I heard that.”

Luke looked at Elena.

“I’ll come back.”

She stared.

“That isn’t a promise you’ve earned yet.”

Luke nodded.

“Fair.”

Then:

“I’ll try.”

That was better.

Bedford.

7:13 a.m.

Marco drove.

Police came separately.

Detective Ortiz insisted.

Luke hated it.

Accepted it.

Samuel’s house looked peaceful.

White siding.

Horse fence.

No horses.

Daniel’s SUV sat behind the detached garage.

They had him.

Ortiz knocked first.

No answer.

Second knock.

Then Samuel opened the door.

Seventy-one.

Silver hair.

Sweater.

The same composed eyes Luke remembered from boardrooms.

“Luke.”

No surprise.

That told him enough.

“You knew I was coming.”

Samuel looked past him at police.

“I assumed.”

“Where is Daniel?”

“Inside.”

Ortiz stepped forward.

“Mr. Mercer, we need to speak with both of you.”

Samuel smiled faintly.

“Of course.”

Inside, Daniel sat at the kitchen table.

Coffee untouched.

He looked exhausted.

Luke stopped.

Brothers.

Same dark hair, though Daniel’s had grayed.

Same father’s jaw.

Different eyes.

Daniel looked up.

“Luke.”

“You destroyed her.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I knew that would be first.”

“It should be last.”

Ortiz moved between them slightly.

Luke noticed.

Resented.

Needed.

Daniel said:

“I didn’t mean for Elena to collapse.”

Luke laughed.

“That’s your defense?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Samuel poured coffee.

Luke stared.

“You’re very calm.”

“I’ve spent thirty years around Mercers.”

“Then you should know when to be afraid.”

Elena’s voice echoed in his head.

Don’t become that man.

Luke stepped back.

“Forget it.”

Samuel raised an eyebrow.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“You used to sound like your father.”

Luke stared.

“And you used to pretend you hated him.”

Samuel’s smile disappeared.

Detective Ortiz took control.

Questions.

Daniel admitted contacting Elena.

Denied sabotaging housing directly.

Then evidence appeared.

Emails.

Corporate instructions.

Account requests.

He changed wording.

“I authorized risk management.”

“For a pregnant woman?”

“I didn’t know she was pregnant until recently.”

Luke asked:

“When?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Six weeks ago.”

Luke’s jaw tightened.

“Before she wrote the letter.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Mother.”

Victoria had lied?

Luke stared.

“My mother told you?”

Daniel nodded.

“She called me after Elena visited.”

Luke felt cold.

Victoria had said she did not tell Daniel.

“Why?”

Samuel answered.

“Because Victoria was trying to keep the family intact.”

Luke looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel sat.

“Your mother thought Daniel could be persuaded to stop if he knew Elena was pregnant.”

Luke nearly laughed.

“Apparently not.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I did stop some things.”

“What?”

“I told people not to touch her physically.”

Luke went completely still.

“Who was going to?”

Daniel said nothing.

Luke stepped forward.

Ortiz blocked him.

“Answer.”

Samuel did.

“Private security.”

“Whose?”

“Mine.”

Luke stared at his uncle.

Samuel did not blink.

“You were watching Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“The ledger.”

“And Martin Hale.”

“Yes.”

Luke’s voice became cold.

“Where is Martin?”

Samuel looked toward Daniel.

Daniel looked down.

Luke’s stomach dropped.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Samuel answered:

“Here.”

Silence.

Luke stared.

Samuel nodded toward a hallway.

“Guest house.”

Luke moved.

Ortiz stopped him.

“Wait.”

Police checked first.

Martin Hale was alive.

Thin.

Terrified.

But not restrained.

Not exactly.

He had been staying there voluntarily under Samuel’s “protection.”

Which sounded generous until Luke learned why.

Samuel had convinced Martin that Daniel would kill him if he left.

Daniel had convinced Samuel that Martin would expose their father.

Everyone had been holding everyone else hostage with fear.

Martin sat in the living room twenty minutes later.

Hands shaking.

He looked at Luke.

“You look like Edward.”

Luke’s father.

“I’m trying not to.”

Martin almost smiled.

“Good.”

“What happened?”

Martin looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

Then Martin began.

Edward Mercer had built offshore vehicles decades ago.

Some legal.

Some not.

Samuel structured them.

Martin tracked them.

Daniel learned.

Then after Edward’s death, Daniel moved charitable assets through those structures.

At first small.

Then millions.

“Why?”

Luke asked.

Daniel finally answered.

“Because Mercer Holdings was overleveraged.”

Luke stared.

“What?”

Samuel closed his eyes.

There it was.

Not pure greed.

Something messier.

In 2019, Daniel had made enormous acquisitions.

Then interest rates shifted.

Several projects underperformed.

The company faced covenant breaches.

If lenders discovered, confidence could collapse.

Daniel moved foundation assets temporarily.

At least that was the original story.

“Temporary?”

Luke asked.

Daniel nodded.

“It was supposed to be.”

“How much?”

“Ten million.”

“And now?”

Martin whispered:

“Over one hundred twenty.”

Luke stared.

Victoria’s $84 million account.

Foundation assets.

Art transfers.

Private holdings.

Everything mixed.

“You stole charity money to save the company.”

Daniel snapped:

“I moved capital.”

Martin laughed weakly.

“You always called theft something with better tailoring.”

Luke almost smiled.

Samuel continued.

“When Daniel could not replace it quickly, he created more transactions.”

“Ponzi logic.”

Martin nodded.

“Basically.”

Luke looked at Daniel.

“And Elena discovered it.”

“Yes.”

“So you destroyed her job.”

“I needed her quiet.”

“Housing.”

“Yes.”

“Insurance.”

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.”

“Blocked my calls.”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Luke whispered:

“You told her I didn’t want our child.”

Daniel’s face broke.

“I panicked.”

Luke laughed.

“Everyone in this family uses that word like panic signs documents.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I thought if she came back to you, you’d open the ledger.”

“I would have.”

“I know.”

“So you made her believe I abandoned her.”

“Yes.”

Luke looked away before rage took over.

Then:

“Why the threat that made me divorce her?”

Daniel froze.

Samuel looked at him.

Martin stared.

Luke’s pulse changed.

“You know what I’m talking about.”

Daniel said nothing.

Luke stepped closer.

“KEEP HER CLOSE AND SHE DIES WITH YOU.”

Samuel went pale.

Daniel whispered:

“I didn’t write that.”

Luke stared.

“Who did?”

No one answered.

Then Samuel closed his eyes.

Luke turned.

“Uncle.”

Samuel looked older suddenly.

“I did.”

Everything stopped.

Luke stared at him.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To scare you.”

“Into divorcing her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel told me Elena had seen the ledger.”

Daniel snapped:

“I didn’t tell you to threaten her life.”

Samuel turned.

“You told me Luke would never let her go.”

Luke felt sick.

“So you weaponized the one thing I couldn’t risk.”

“Yes.”

“You made me break her heart.”

“Yes.”

Samuel looked ashamed.

“I thought if you separated, she would stop asking questions.”

“She asked more.”

“I know.”

“You drove her directly into this.”

Samuel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Luke wanted to hit him.

Instead he looked at Ortiz.

“Arrest somebody before I become nostalgic.”

Ortiz almost smiled.

“Working on it.”

Daniel stood.

“I’ll cooperate.”

Samuel looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I’m done.”

Luke laughed bitterly.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“After Elena nearly died.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at his brother.

“I thought I could contain it.”

Luke shook his head.

“You contained people.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“I’ll give everything.”

“Accounts?”

“Yes.”

“Messages?”

“Yes.”

“Passwords?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward Martin.

Then Samuel.

Then Luke.

“Because I don’t know who I became.”

Luke answered quietly.

“You became Dad.”

Daniel flinched.

That was worse than any threat.

Then Marco’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?”

Luke demanded.

Marco looked toward the door.

“Hospital.”

Luke’s chest stopped.

“Elena?”

“She’s awake.”

Relief.

Then Marco continued.

“But the baby’s heart rate dropped.”

Luke was already moving.

May you like

Everything else could wait.

For the first time in years, Luke Mercer knew exactly what mattered more than the family business.
