Chapter 12 - The Family Heirloom

The Sicilian sun dipped low over the horizon, painting the stone courtyard in shades of gold and amber. Lorenzo sat on the wooden bench beside his mother, listening as she explained the decades of silence.
"Your father was a monster, Lorenzo," Sofia said softly, holding his hand. "When I realized what he intended to mold you into, I tried to take you and run. He caught me. He told me if I ever came near you again, he would kill us both. I fled to the monastery, praying every day that the darkness wouldn't consume you."
"It almost did," Lorenzo admitted, looking across the garden.
There, Emily was teaching Clara how to weave flower crowns from the fallen olive branches. Clara was laughing, her bright voice echoing off the ancient stone walls.
"But it didn't," Sofia smiled, squeezing his hand. "Because of them."
Lorenzo stood up and walked over to where Emily and Clara were sitting on the grass. Clara jumped up and proudly placed a slightly lopsided flower crown on Lorenzo’s head.
"You look like a king, Daddy!" she giggled.
"And you look like a princess," Lorenzo smiled, kissing her nose. He turned to Emily, who was looking up at him with eyes full of overwhelming love.
"I never thought I'd have a family," Emily said softly. "I thought I'd just be the girl in the background, keeping Clara safe."
Lorenzo reached down and gently pulled Emily to her feet. He traced the silver bracelet on her wrist. "You were never in the background, Emily. You were the foundation holding my entire world up. I just couldn't see it until the walls fell."
He reached into his pocket. He didn't pull out a velvet box this time. He pulled out a simple, elegant gold band. No massive diamonds. No mafia flash. Just a pure, unbreakable circle.
Emily gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
"I don't have an empire anymore," Lorenzo said quietly, getting down on one knee in the soft grass of the monastery garden. "I don't have mansions or armies. I just have a house by the sea, a dog that chews up my shoes, and a daughter who needs her mother."
Clara gasped, clapping her hands over her mouth in a perfect mirror of Emily's shock.
"Emily Carter," Lorenzo said, his voice steady and full of absolute certainty. "Will you do me the honor of being my wife, and Clara's mother, for the rest of our lives?"
Tears spilled freely down Emily's cheeks. She didn't hesitate. She didn't look back at the past, the trauma, or the scars they both carried. She looked at the man who had given up everything to protect them.

"Yes," Emily cried, dropping to her knees and throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Lorenzo. Always yes."
Clara cheered, tackling them both into a messy, laughing hug on the grass. From the bench, Sofia watched her son, her heart finally at peace. The Moretti name was no longer a symbol of fear or violence. It was finally, simply, a family.
