Chapter 10 - The Silver Bracelet

Six months later.
The coastal town of Monterey, California, was a world away from the dark, blood-soaked streets of Lorenzo’s past. Here, the air smelled of salt and pine, and the only loud noises came from the crashing waves against the cliffs below their new, modest home.
Lorenzo stood on the wooden deck, wearing a simple gray sweater and jeans, watching Clara run along the beach with a golden retriever puppy they had adopted a week ago. There were no armed guards. No high concrete walls. Just the open horizon.
The back door slid open, and Emily stepped out, carrying two mugs of coffee. She wore a comfortable knitted cardigan, her hair tied back in a messy bun. She looked radiant, entirely free from the heavy black uniform and the constant fear that had plagued her for two years.
"She's going to exhaust that puppy," Emily laughed, handing Lorenzo a mug.
Lorenzo smiled, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close. "Or the puppy will exhaust her. Either way, she sleeps through the night now."
Emily rested her head against his shoulder. They had transitioned from a life of survival into a genuine, quiet romance. It hadn't been rushed. It had grown naturally from mutual respect, shared trauma, and a fierce, undeniable love for the little girl running on the beach.
"Mail came," Emily said, taking a sip of her coffee. "Mostly bills. But there was a package forwarded from the old estate's P.O. Box. The lawyers finally finished clearing out the last of the safety deposit boxes."
Lorenzo frowned slightly. He had thought all ties to his old life were severed. "What was it?"
Emily reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver box. It looked incredibly old, with faded Italian engravings on the lid. "It was addressed to you. But the return address was a monastery in Sicily."
Lorenzo took the box, his curiosity piqued. He opened it carefully. Inside, resting on a bed of faded red velvet, was a delicate silver bracelet. It was crafted with intricate vines and small, uncut emeralds. Attached to it was a small, handwritten note on heavy parchment.
"What is it?" Emily asked, leaning in.
Lorenzo read the note, his breath catching in his throat. He handed the paper to Emily.
The note was written in Italian, but the English translation beneath it was clear:Lorenzo, my beautiful boy. If you are reading this, I am long gone. I left this bracelet with the sisters when I fled to America. Give it to the woman who saves your heart, for she will be the mother your child needs. — Your Mother, Sofia.
"Your mother?" Emily whispered, looking at the delicate jewelry. "I thought you told me she died when you were a baby in a fire?"
"She did," Lorenzo said, his voice trembling slightly. "At least, that's what my father told me. He said she died in a house fire before he brought me into the family business."

He picked up the silver bracelet. The craftsmanship was unmistakable. It wasn't mafia gold. It was old-world artisan work.
"If she left this with a monastery..." Lorenzo looked at Emily, a new mystery dawning in his eyes. "Emily, my father lied to me. My mother didn't die in a fire. She ran away."
