Chapter 5 - The Ticket to Nowhere

The name printed on the ticket was Clara Moretti.
Lorenzo stared at the crisp piece of paper in his hands, the letters blurring as a wave of cold dread washed over him. A one-way ticket to Montreal. Dated for tomorrow. He looked at the departure time: 8:00 AM. While he would have been finalizing the wedding preparations, Isabella had planned to put his seven-year-old daughter on a train out of the country.
"Where did she drop this, Clara?" Lorenzo asked, struggling to keep his voice steady. He didn't want to frighten her again tonight.
Clara pointed a small finger toward the hallway. "In the foyer, when she was talking to a scary man in a gray coat. She told him, 'Make sure the boarding school knows she has no returning guardians.'"
Emily gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "A boarding school? She was going to send Clara away?"
"No," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous rumble. "The Vescaris don't use boarding schools. Montreal is where they run their foster operations for leverage. They were going to use my daughter as a hostage to ensure my complete loyalty after the wedding."
He pulled Clara into his chest, holding her so tightly she squeaked. He buried his face in her hair, the smell of strawberry shampoo grounding him. He had almost let it happen. He had invited the devil into his home, allowed her to wear his ring, and stood by while she berated the only person who actually loved his child.
"Daddy, you're squishing me," Clara mumbled against his suit jacket.
Lorenzo loosened his grip but didn't let go. He looked up at Emily. "You knew she was dangerous. You knew the Vescaris killed my wife. Why didn't you come to me sooner? Why wait two years?"
Emily looked down at her hands, still clutching the white apron. "Because you were allied with them, Mr. Moretti. When I saw the news that you were merging your territories with the Vescari family, I thought... I thought you knew. I thought you had let it happen for power."
The words hit Lorenzo like a physical blow. Of course she thought that. The entire underworld thought Lorenzo’s alliance with the Vescaris was a cold, calculated move of a ruthless Mafia Boss moving past his wife's tragic accident. They didn't know the merger was the only way he could secretly audit their books to find the leak that caused Elena's death.
"I didn't know," Lorenzo swore quietly. "I would burn this city to the ground before I let anyone hurt my family."
"I know that now," Emily said softly, looking at the way Clara clung to him. "I realized it tonight. When Isabella told Clara to scrub the kiss away, I saw your eyes. You didn't care about the politics or the guests. You only cared about her. That's why I finally spoke up."
Lorenzo stood up, lifting Clara effortlessly into his arms. "You saved her life, Emily. Twice. You tried to save Elena, and you stayed to save Clara. I owe you a debt I can never repay."
Emily shook her head gently. "You don't owe me anything. I just wanted Clara to be safe. Since Isabella is gone, I... I should probably pack my things too. My cover is blown, and the remaining Vescari loyalists will come looking for me."
"No." Lorenzo’s command was absolute. "You aren't going anywhere. This house is a fortress, and you are under my protection now."
Before Emily could protest, Marco sprinted back into the dining room, his face pale and sweating. "Boss," the security chief panted, checking his sidearm. "We have a massive problem."
"I told you to take them to the warehouse, Marco," Lorenzo snapped.
"We tried. But as we were loading Carlo and Isabella into the vans, three SUVs crashed the front gates. Heavy artillery. They hit us hard. Carlo and Isabella escaped in the chaos."
Lorenzo cursed under his breath. The Vescari family hadn't just sent delegates to a dinner party; they had brought an extraction team, anticipating that their secrets might be exposed.
"Lock down the estate," Lorenzo ordered, his mafia instincts taking over. "Nobody in, nobody out. Move the men to the perimeter. Where did they breach?"
"The East Wing," Marco said, catching his breath. "Boss, they aren't just leaving. They're pushing inside. They're looking for something."
Emily’s eyes widened in sudden panic. She grabbed Lorenzo's sleeve, abandoning all formalities. "The coat! Lorenzo, the gray coat!"
Lorenzo frowned. "What coat?"
May you like
"The man Clara saw Isabella talking to," Emily said rapidly. "When I was cleaning the guest suites yesterday, I found a heavy winter coat lined with architectural blueprints. I didn't understand them, but they had your estate's name on them. They marked a structural weakness beneath the East Wing!"
A massive explosion suddenly rocked the mansion, shattering the crystal chandeliers above them. Glass rained down like diamond tears as the floor beneath them violently shuddered.
