Chapter 7 - THE MAN USING RICARDO’S NAME

Matteo Carbone had worked for Moretti family twenty-one years.

That meant everyone called him loyal.

I was beginning to dislike that word.

It seemed to mean:

We stopped checking.

Ricardo did not summon him.

Good.

Instead, outside forensic team reviewed shipping logs.

Dante stayed off system voluntarily.

His cloned credential showed access on nights he was physically elsewhere.

One timestamp placed him in hospital with bitten hand being treated after Il Verano incident.

Impossible.

So Dante cleared.

He looked at me.

“Your kid helped my alibi.”

“Leo is not my kid.”

I corrected.

He nodded.

“Right.”

Then:

“Your tiny employer.”

I laughed.

Evidence:

Carbone continued banned weapons shipments through Red Hook and Newark.

Used legitimate Moretti freight.

Forged Ricardo approvals.

Skimmed millions.

More importantly, he had buyers tied to rival families who believed Ricardo personally authorized deals.

If exposed wrongly, it could start war.

There.

Mafia stakes.

Ricardo sat with maps.

Old instincts returning.

“I can solve this.”

Dante looked at him.

“How?”

Silence.

He knew what he meant.

Grace says:

“You can solve it old way.”

He looked.

“And then Leo grows up learning your version of closed doors.”

That hit.

So they use federal? But mafia boss cooperating is tricky. Could use attorneys, port authorities, independent corporate security, surrender records maybe. He decides legitimate freight operations cooperate with investigators through counsel, while underworld contacts are told shipments unauthorized and suspended. No retaliation.

Carbone responds by contacting Celeste.

She calls Ricardo immediately.

Good sign.

“He wants me to meet him.”

“No.”

She says.

“I already told lawyer.”

Progress.

Carbone tells her he has proof she knowingly financed routes.

False but plausible due foundation transfers.

She panics.

Ricardo says:

“If you did something, tell truth now.”

She admits: She borrowed $430k from Carbone personally to replace Leo's trust money before Elena died. Then used foundation funds to repay him partly. Carbone later demanded access to Moretti logistics vendor lists as "collateral." She gave him copies because afraid Ricardo learn theft.

Thus her wrongdoing enabled his forged network.

She did not know weapons.

Again harm chain.

Ricardo furious.

But no threats.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You would have destroyed me.”

Would he?

Old Ricardo maybe.

He can't deny.

“That fear made you easier for him to use.”

“Yes.”

Then Carbone sends photo of old Elena office, showing he had copied a diary? Maybe he has one page.

Elena knew.

He threatens to release something about Ricardo if blue folder not handed.

What did Elena know? That Ricardo's own father started illegal routes, and Ricardo had promised to close but delayed. Not criminal revelation? He is mafia boss. More emotional: Elena wrote she might leave Ricardo if he didn't get out before Leo started school. Carbone thinks this will destabilize him.

He sends photo of letter:

If Ricardo chooses the organization over Leo one more time, I will take our son and leave.

Ricardo shattered. He didn't know.

Grace says “It doesn't mean she stopped loving you. It means she had a boundary.” Good.

This motivates him to fully exit violent operations.

Carbone expects anger; instead Ricardo releases through lawyers evidence that he ordered closure of routes and cooperates on forged shipments. He sacrifices reputation/profit to remove leverage.

Carbone then tries to flee.

Caught? Maybe he kidnaps no one. Keep nonviolent. At port, customs detain with weapons records? Yes.

But needs drama high. Could have armed standoff? Non-graphic okay. Carbone boards warehouse with men; Ricardo tempted to confront. Instead Dante and law enforcement handle. Ricardo stays with Leo? That is key: chooses son over old-world showdown.

At climactic moment, Carbone sends location challenge: "If you're still Moretti, come alone." Ricardo looks at Leo asleep, chooses not to go. That shows change. Carbone is arrested in sting by authorities.

Strong.

Then chapter 8 post-crisis romance maybe with Grace. Need slow, maybe two years. She should not become replacement mother or rescue. Ricardo asks dinner only after her role independent and Leo stable. Grace declines first perhaps. Later yes. She has grief from Emma. Need expand her own backstory.

Grace's daughter Emma died at five? She said hospital crib, little girl five years trying bury. Let's establish Emma died from leukemia at age 4/5. Her marriage? Maybe Emma's father left during illness or after? Need not overdo. She carries guilt. Leo triggers grief. She works pediatric rehab nonprofit. Therapy perhaps.

Ricardo notices she avoids children's rooms when alarms. She opens up.

One day Leo gets fever, Grace panics more than Ricardo, because Emma memory. She realizes she is not only caregiver; she has unresolved grief. She goes to therapy. Good balance.

Romance emerges after time.

Let's draft chapters 6-9 integrated, ~1100 each. Need final happy ending maybe Grace marries Ricardo, Leo calls her Grace for years, later maybe "Mama Grace" by choice. Need not erase Elena.

Let's write.
