Chapter 6 - THE SILK BANDAGE

Luca collapsed onto the cold concrete floor of the warehouse.
"Luca!" I screamed, abandoning my mother’s side and sliding across the floor to reach him.
His dark suit was instantly soaking up the blood, turning the fabric a terrifying, heavy black. His eyes were open, but his breathing was shallow, a wet, rattling sound echoing in his chest.
Vanessa scrambled backward, pressing her hands against her mouth, staring at the man she had betrayed as he bled out because he refused to let her die.
"Help me!" I yelled at Vanessa, pressing both my hands hard against Luca’s chest wound to stem the bleeding. "Don't just sit there! Help me!"
Vanessa shook her head, paralyzed by shock and guilt. She scrambled to her feet and ran into the darkness, abandoning him a second time.
"Let her go, Claire," my mother said, dropping to her knees beside me. Despite her arthritis, despite her terror, the veteran seamstress moved with absolute, calm precision.
She ripped the heavy silk lining from Luca’s ruined suit jacket.
"Keep the pressure," my mother ordered me. She folded the thick silk into a dense pad. "Move your hands."
I lifted my hands, slick with his blood, and my mother slammed the silk pad directly into the wound, tying it tightly in place with a strip of fabric torn from her own dress.
Answer One: My mother’s steady hands, the same hands that had sewn wedding dresses for forty years, were now sewing together the life of the man she had saved two decades ago.
Luca coughed, his eyes locking onto my mother’s face.
"Maria," he rasped, forcing a weak smile. "You saved me... again."
"Quiet, boy," my mother said sternly, though tears filled her eyes. "I didn't steal three million dollars twenty years ago just to watch you die in a warehouse. Keep your eyes open."
I pulled out my phone, my hands shaking violently. "I'm calling an ambulance."
"No!" Luca grabbed my wrist with surprising strength. "No hospitals. If Viktor finds out I'm alive and vulnerable in a hospital, he will send men to finish the job. And he will kill everyone in the building."
Open Two: How do you save a man with a bullet in his chest without taking him to a hospital?
"Then what do we do?" I cried, panic rising in my throat.
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He dialed a single number and put it on speaker.
"Marco," Luca breathed, his voice weakening rapidly.
"Boss?" the head of security answered, his voice thick with pain from Vanessa’s attack earlier. "Where are you? We have the city locked down."
"Pier 9. Warehouse 4," Luca choked out. "Bring the private doctor. And Marco... bring Evelyn."
I frowned, staring at him. "Evelyn? The seamstress? Why do you need Evelyn?"
Luca’s eyes fluttered shut. "Because... she knows the safehouse."
His hand went limp. The phone clattered to the floor.
"Luca! Stay with me!" I yelled, pressing my hands over my mother’s silk bandage.
Ten agonizing minutes later, Marco burst through the warehouse doors with three heavily armed men and a terrifyingly calm doctor carrying a trauma kit.
They loaded Luca onto a stretcher and rushed him into the back of an armored medical van. My mother and I sat in the corner of the van, huddled together, covered in his blood.
The doctor worked frantically as the van sped through the night. "The bullet missed his heart by a fraction of an inch," the doctor muttered, inserting an IV. "But he’s losing too much blood. He needs a transfusion, immediately. I don't have enough O-negative in the kit."
"I'm O-negative," my mother said instantly, rolling up her sleeve.
The doctor didn't hesitate. He set up the line, connecting the quiet, brave seamstress directly to the dying mafia boss.
The van finally slowed, pulling into a hidden, underground garage beneath an old, grand building in the heart of Chicago.
I looked out the window. It wasn't a mafia fortress or a sterile bunker.
It was Evelyn Caruso’s bridal boutique.
We carried Luca upstairs to a hidden, reinforced apartment above the shop. The doctor set up a makeshift ICU on the bed.
Evelyn was waiting for us. She wasn't surprised to see a bleeding mafia boss carried into her home. She looked at my mother, who was pale from the blood donation, and wrapped her in a fierce, tearful hug.
"I told you he would protect you, Maria," Evelyn wept.
I stood in the doorway, exhausted, confused, and terrified.
"Evelyn," I asked softly. "Why did Luca bring us here? Why is your shop the safehouse?"
Evelyn wiped her eyes, looking at Luca’s unconscious body.
Reversal: Evelyn wasn't just a seamstress who occasionally made dresses for the Moretti family. She was deeply, fundamentally connected to the syndicate's darkest secret.
"Because thirty years ago, Claire," Evelyn sighed, her voice heavy with the weight of decades. "Antonio Moretti didn't just buy a wedding dress from me."
She walked over to a heavy iron safe hidden behind a rack of wedding gowns, spun the dial, and pulled out a stack of birth certificates.
"He bought silence," Evelyn said, handing me the top paper.
I looked down at the birth certificate. The name on the paper wasn't Luca Moretti.
It was Luca Caruso.

"Luca isn't Antonio’s son," Evelyn whispered, tears spilling over her cheeks. "He’s mine."
