Chapter 9 - THE DECOY

Viktor’s smile vanished. The silver-haired Russian boss stepped closer, the barrel of his rifle pointed squarely at my face.

"I admire bravery, Claire," Viktor said, his voice a lethal purr. "But stupidity? That I punish. Give me the key."

Marco tensed, preparing to lunge, but a second Russian guard stepped into the doorway, aiming a shotgun at Marco’s back. We were entirely trapped.

I looked at the heavy iron key in my palm. It was old, intricate, and the only thing standing between Luca’s survival and a mafia slaughter.

Then, I looked at Vanessa.

She was trembling, her expensive clothes torn, her face bruised from Viktor’s cruelty. She had sold everyone out to save herself, and she was still going to die the moment she stopped being useful.

Answer One: The Russians didn't know we were coming for the key. They were tearing the house apart looking for it themselves, and we just happened to do the hard work for them.

"You want the key, Viktor?" I asked, my voice shaking, but my mind racing. "Fine. But you should know... it doesn't open a lockbox."

Viktor frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"My mother didn't leave a lockbox in the vault twenty years ago," I lied, projecting every ounce of confidence I could muster. "She opened it. The money wasn't in it. It was filled with microfiche files. Blackmail. Pictures of you colluding with the FBI."

Viktor’s face went pale. The one thing a mafia boss feared more than death was being labeled a rat.

"That's a lie!" Viktor roared, though doubt flickered in his eyes.

"Antonio hid the files in a safety deposit box at the First National Bank," I continued smoothly, stepping toward him. "This key opens it. Luca already sent the box number to the Commission. If you kill us, the files go public tomorrow morning."

Reversal: I wasn't just stalling. I was using the bluff to shift the power dynamic.

Viktor hesitated, lowering the rifle just a fraction of an inch to look at the key in my hand.

It was the only opening I was going to get.

I didn't throw the key at him. I threw it directly at the massive, floor-to-ceiling mirror behind him.

The heavy iron key struck the glass with a deafening crash.

Viktor flinched, distracted by the shattering mirror.

"Marco, now!" I screamed.

Marco lunged. He didn't go for Viktor; he spun around and tackled the guard with the shotgun, driving him through the closet door and into the hallway.

Viktor recovered instantly, raising his rifle toward me.

But before he could pull the trigger, a figure slammed into him from the side.

It was Vanessa.

Fuelled by sheer, desperate rage, the former socialite drove her high heel directly into Viktor’s knee. The Russian boss howled in pain, the rifle discharging wildly into the ceiling.

"Run, Claire!" Vanessa shrieked, grappling with the much larger man.

I scrambled across the glass-covered floor, scooped up the iron key, and bolted out of the closet. Marco had neutralized the second guard and was waiting in the hallway.

"Go, go, go!" Marco yelled, pushing me toward the stairs.

We didn't look back. We sprinted down the grand staircase and burst out the front doors into the pouring rain.

We dove into the sedan. Marco floored the accelerator, tearing through the estate gates just as Viktor hobbled out the front doors, firing his rifle into the night.

"Are you hit?" Marco yelled over the roaring engine.

"No!" I gasped, clutching the key to my chest. "I have it. I have the key."

"Where does it go?" Marco asked, navigating the slick roads back toward Evelyn’s shop.

"I lied to Viktor," I confessed, wiping the rain and sweat from my face. "It doesn't go to a bank. I don't know what it opens."

Open Two: If the key doesn't open a bank vault, where did Antonio Moretti hide the Russian leverage?

We reached the bridal shop in record time. I sprinted upstairs to the hidden apartment.

Luca was sitting up in bed, looking slightly better after the blood transfusion, but still terribly pale. My mother and Evelyn were standing by his side.

"I got it," I panted, holding up the heavy iron key.

Luca took the key from my hand. He studied the intricate, rusted teeth. He traced a small, faded engraving on the bow of the key.

It was a tiny, stylized crest. Two crossed needles over a spool of thread.

Luca looked up, his eyes wide with disbelief. He looked at Evelyn.

"Mom," Luca whispered. "This isn't a bank key. This is the key to the old iron safe you used to keep in the basement of this shop. The one you told me broke twenty years ago."

Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"Antonio didn't hide the lockbox in a vault," Luca realized, a stunned smile breaking across his face. "He hid it in the one place the Russians would never, ever look. He hid it in a wedding dress shop."
