Chapter 10 - THE IRON SAFE

The realization hung in the air, heavy and profound.
For twenty years, the leverage that could dismantle the entire Russian mafia had been sitting beneath our feet, hidden amidst tulle, lace, and wedding gowns.
"The basement," Evelyn breathed, rushing toward the apartment door. "The old safe is still down there. I never threw it out because it was too heavy to move."
Despite the doctor’s frantic protests, Luca swung his legs over the side of the bed. He was pale, sweating, and heavily bandaged, but the fire in his eyes was undeniable.
"Give me a shirt," Luca grunted, leaning heavily on Marco’s shoulder.
"You can't walk down those stairs," I argued, grabbing his arm. "You'll tear your stitches."
"I have to open it, Claire," Luca said, his voice completely resolute. "This is my father’s final legacy. I have to finish it."
Answer One: The key didn't just unlock a box; it unlocked the final chapter of Antonio Moretti’s reign, allowing Luca to end the war his father started.
We slowly made our way down to the basement of the bridal shop. It smelled of old dust and dried lavender. In the far corner, hidden behind racks of out-of-style inventory from the 1990s, stood a massive, rusted iron safe.
Luca stepped forward, bracing himself against the wall. He inserted the heavy iron key into the lock.
It turned with a loud, metallic clank.
Marco pulled the heavy door open.
Inside the safe sat a single, dark green metal lockbox. It bore the faded insignia of the Romanov cartel.
Luca pulled it out and set it on a dusty worktable. He used a crowbar from a nearby toolbox to snap the flimsy padlock.
He opened the lid.
I held my breath, expecting stacks of cash or microfiche.
Instead, the box was filled with perfectly preserved, legal documents. Deeds.
Luca picked up the top stack. He read the first page, and a slow, victorious smile spread across his face.
"Viktor Romanov doesn't own his empire," Luca laughed softly, the sound full of sheer relief. "He put all the deeds to the Russian properties, casinos, and front businesses into a holding company twenty years ago to avoid federal seizure."
He looked at me, his dark eyes shining.
"My father didn't just steal the deeds. He forged the transfer documents. The holding company isn't owned by the Romanovs anymore."
Reversal: The leverage wasn't blackmail. It was absolute, legal ownership. Antonio Moretti had quietly bought the Russian mafia out from under them.
"Who owns it?" my mother asked, stepping closer.
Luca looked at the signature on the bottom of the deed. His smile softened into something deeply emotional.
"He left it to a trust," Luca whispered. "In the name of Maria Donovan."
My mother staggered back, gripping the edge of the table. "Me? He left the Russian empire to me?"
"You saved his son's life," Luca said gently. "This was his way of ensuring that if the Russians ever came after you, you held the keys to their entire existence."
Open Two: How do a seamstress and a wounded mafia boss use property deeds to stop an army of heavily armed Russians?
Before we could process the magnitude of the discovery, the heavy wooden floorboards above our heads creaked.
Marco instantly raised his weapon, pointing it at the basement ceiling. "Someone broke into the shop upstairs."
"It's Viktor," Luca said quietly. "He tracked the sedan."
Heavy footsteps echoed down the wooden stairs leading to the basement.
Viktor Romanov descended, his silver cane clicking against the steps. He looked bruised, exhausted, and incredibly dangerous. Behind him stood four heavily armed guards.
"A clever trick at the mansion, little maid," Viktor sneered, spotting me. "But you can't outrun me."
He looked at the open lockbox on the table, and his eyes lit up with greedy triumph.
"Ah," Viktor smiled. "My legacy. Hand it over, Luca, and I promise to make your death quick."
Luca didn't raise a gun. He simply picked up the stack of property deeds and held them over a lit candle Evelyn used to melt sealing wax.
"You shoot us, Viktor, and I drop these into the fire," Luca said calmly. "Without these original deeds, the federal government seizes your entire empire for unpaid back taxes within forty-eight hours. You’ll be a king without a kingdom."
Viktor froze. The guards lowered their weapons slightly, unsure of what to do.
"What do you want?" Viktor hissed, his face red with rage.
"I want peace," Luca demanded. "I want you and your men out of Chicago forever. You sign a surrender of territory to the Commission, and I hand over the deeds. If you ever set foot in this city again, I burn them."
Viktor stared at the flames licking the edges of the paper. He looked at his empire, dangling by a thread over a candle in a dusty basement.
"You think you can trust me?" Viktor spat.
"No," Luca said. "But I know you trust your greed."

Viktor ground his teeth. He knew he was beaten. He nodded sharply. "Done."
