Chapter 7 - THE SECOND BETRAYAL AND THE WAREHOUSE

The heavy silence inside the speeding SUV was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic thumping of the windshield wipers against the driving rain.

"The real father?" Elena whispered, the color completely draining from her face. She leaned forward from the backseat, clutching the headrest of my chair. "Luca, what are you talking about? David is the father."

Luca stared out the rain-streaked windshield, his jaw set in a hard, agonizing line. He didn't answer immediately. He looked like a man trying to figure out how to defuse a bomb that was already detonating.

"Mr. Moretti," I said softly, keeping my eyes on the dark road ahead. "You need to tell her."

Luca let out a long, shuddering breath. He turned in the passenger seat to face his sister, his hands still awkwardly zip-tied in front of him.

"Elena, when David approached you seven months ago, I had him investigated," Luca explained, his voice gentle but firm. "I found out he was a Volkov. But I also found out something else."

He paused, the truth clearly painful to speak.

"David was sterile, sweetheart," Luca said softly. "He had a childhood illness that left him unable to have children. It was a closely guarded secret within the Volkov family because Dmitri considered it a weakness."

Elena froze. Her hands instinctively dropped to her swollen stomach.

"No," she stammered, shaking her head in violent denial. "No, that’s impossible. I only slept with David. I loved him!"

"I know you did," Luca said, his eyes filled with profound pity. "But the Volkovs wanted a blood tie to the Moretti empire. They wanted a child they could use as leverage. When David couldn't provide one... Dmitri Volkov didn't cancel the plan. He adapted it."

"Adapted it how?" I asked, my blood running cold at the implications.

"David didn't sleep with you that night, Elena," Luca whispered, the horror of the revelation filling the car. "You told me you went to a party at a club downtown. You said you had a few drinks and woke up in David’s apartment the next morning, not remembering much."

Tears spilled over Elena’s eyelashes as the memory surfaced. "I... I thought I just drank too much."

"You were drugged," Luca said, his voice hardening with lethal fury. "By the man Dmitri actually paid to father the child. A man whose bloodline was just as valuable to them, but who could actually produce an heir."

"Who?" Elena choked out, trembling violently.

Luca looked away, unable to meet her eyes.

"Marco," Luca said.

The SUV swerved slightly as my hands jerked on the steering wheel in sheer shock.

Marco. Luca’s right-hand man. The loyal, scarred head of security who had held the front door of the mansion to buy us time to escape.

"Marco?" Elena gasped, absolute betrayal shattering her voice. "Marco is the father?"

"Marco is a bastard son of the Romano family," Luca explained, his tactical mind laying out the brutal reality of their world. "The Volkovs wanted to tie the Romanos and the Morettis together under a Russian banner. They paid Marco to drug you, sleep with you, and then let David take the credit."

"He raped me," Elena wept, collapsing back into the seat, wrapping her arms around her stomach as if to protect her unborn child from the truth of its conception.

"And when I found out David was a Volkov and paid a hitman to kill him," Luca continued, his voice dropping to a deadly hum, "Marco realized his payday was walking out the door. So Marco intercepted the hitman. He paid him double to keep David alive in secret, using him as an insurance policy."

"Marco sent the ransom note," I realized aloud, the pieces snapping together with terrifying clarity. "He used Vanessa to deliver it to you at the dinner party tonight, knowing it would distract you while he opened the gates for the Volkovs."

"He sold us out," Luca said, his eyes turning black with vengeance. "He let Dmitri into my home, thinking Dmitri would reward him with a seat at the table. But Marco is a fool. Dmitri will kill him the second he realizes Marco betrayed the Volkovs by keeping David alive for a ransom."

"Where is David now?" Elena asked, wiping her tears, a sudden, fierce determination hardening her features. The devastated girl was gone, replaced by a mother fighting for her survival.

"The GPS data on Vanessa’s burner phone," Luca said, holding up the blood-stained device. "The ransom note text was sent from an abandoned shipping warehouse on the South Side. That’s where Marco is keeping him."

"We have to go there," Elena said firmly.

"No," Luca argued immediately. "Hannah is taking you to the safehouse in Wisconsin. I’m going to the warehouse alone. I’ll deal with Marco, and I’ll get David back to Dmitri to end this war."

"Luca, your hands are zip-tied and you don't have a weapon!" I pointed out, glancing at his bound wrists.

"I’ll figure it out," Luca grunted, straining against the thick plastic ties.

"I’m not going to a safehouse," Elena stated, leaning forward, her voice brokering no argument. "Marco violated me. He used my baby as a bargaining chip. I’m not hiding in Wisconsin while he breathes the same air as my daughter."

Luca stared at his little sister, stunned by the sheer ferocity in her eyes. The quiet, cheerful girl who baked cookies for the staff was gone. She was a Moretti, and she wanted blood.

"Hannah," Luca sighed, realizing he couldn't stop her. "Do you have a knife in the glove compartment?"

I popped the compartment open and handed him a small pocketknife. He awkwardly sawed through the zip-ties, rubbing his bruised wrists once he was free.

"Turn the car around," Luca ordered. "We’re going to the South Side."

Twenty minutes later, we pulled into the desolate, rain-slicked industrial district. The towering brick warehouses looked like dark, looming monsters in the night.

I killed the headlights, rolling the armored SUV to a silent stop a block away from the address listed on the GPS.

"Stay in the car, Elena," Luca ordered, opening the passenger door.

"I’m coming with you," she insisted.

"You can barely walk, sweetheart," Luca said gently, pointing to her swollen stomach. "If Marco is in there, there will be gunfire. You stay here. Hannah will stay with you. If I’m not out in ten minutes, drive to the police station. Do not wait for me."

He didn't give her a chance to argue. He slipped out of the car, disappearing into the rainy shadows of the alleyway.

I locked the doors, my heart hammering in my chest. Elena sat in the back, breathing heavily, her hands resting protectively on her stomach.

"He’s going to be okay," I lied softly, trying to comfort her.

Five agonizing minutes passed in silence.

Then, my cell phone buzzed in my pocket.

I jumped, pulling it out quickly. It was a text message from an unknown number.

I opened it, and the blood completely drained from my face.

Turn around, little maid.

I gasped, spinning around in the driver's seat.

Standing directly behind the armored SUV, illuminated by the red glow of the taillights, was Marco.

He was holding an assault rifle, pointing it directly at the back windshield.

But he wasn't alone.

Kneeling on the wet pavement next to him, his face beaten and bloodied, was David Volkov.

Marco raised a hand and tapped his ear, then pointed his rifle at the gas tank of the SUV.

He wanted me to roll down the window.

May you like

I swallowed hard, my hands shaking as I pressed the button, lowering the window just an inch.

"Step out of the car, Hannah," Marco’s voice carried over the rain, cold and lethal. "And bring the pregnant prize with you. Or I blow this truck sky-high right now."
