Chapter 8 - THE EXCHANGE

The gunshot echoed over the crashing waves like a cannon blast.

Vanessa screamed as the bullet shattered her right wrist. The silver handgun spun out of her grip and clattered across the wet concrete.

“Lily, run!” Emma screamed.

The five-year-old didn’t freeze. She bolted. Her bare feet slapped against the freezing pavement as she ran toward her mother.

Emma dropped to her knees, catching the child in her arms. She buried her face in Lily’s neck, sobbing uncontrollably.

Vanessa stumbled backward, clutching her bleeding wrist against Vincent’s oversized wool coat. Her beautiful face was twisted into a mask of pure, ugly rage.

“You’re a dead man, Luca!” Vanessa shrieked over the wind. “The Falcones will burn your city to the ground!”

Luca walked slowly toward her, his gun still raised, aimed squarely at her chest.

“The Falcones are going to have a lot of problems by tomorrow morning,” Luca said coldly.

He kicked Vanessa’s dropped gun off the edge of the pier. It splashed into the black, freezing water below.

Then he looked down at the open briefcase.

“You wanted the Romano ledger, Vanessa. Pick it up.”

Vanessa glared at him, panting heavily. She looked down at the leather book in the case.

“You think I’m stupid?” she hissed. “You think I won’t tell them you set a trap?”

“You won’t tell them anything,” Luca said.

Suddenly, the blinding headlights of three more black SUVs flicked on from the far end of the pier, blocking the only exit.

Doors opened. A dozen heavily armed men, led by Marco, stepped out into the fog.

Vanessa’s face went completely pale.

“I told you no guards!” she screamed, stepping toward the edge of the pier.

“You also told me you loved me,” Luca replied without an ounce of emotion. “We both lie.”

Marco walked up, his men flanking Vanessa in a tight circle.

“Take her,” Luca ordered. “Drop her at the Falcone compound in New York. Leave the dummy ledger with her. When the feds raid them tomorrow, let them know exactly whose fiancée brought the FBI to their doorstep.”

Vanessa fought like a wild animal as Marco’s men grabbed her by the arms.

“He’ll kill me!” Vanessa screamed, terror finally breaking through her arrogant facade. “If I bring them a bugged ledger, the boss will kill me!”

“Then I suggest you run very fast, Vanessa,” Luca said, turning his back on her.

He walked back to where Emma was kneeling on the pavement, wrapping her own coat around Lily’s shivering shoulders.

Emma looked up at Luca. Her face was streaked with tears, but her eyes were shining with a profound, overwhelming gratitude.

Luca holstered his weapon. He knelt down on one knee so he was eye-level with the little girl.

“Are you okay, Lily?” Luca asked gently, his voice softening completely.

Lily looked at the tall, imposing man in the tailored suit. She sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve.

“The lady was mean,” Lily said, her lower lip trembling. “But I stayed quiet like Mommy said.”

Luca smiled softly. “You did a very brave job, Lily. The mean lady is gone now. She’s never coming back.”

Emma pulled Lily tighter against her chest. She looked at Luca, her wounded right hand resting gently on her daughter’s back.

“Thank you,” Emma whispered, her voice cracking. “Luca… thank you.”

Luca reached out and gently touched Emma’s left shoulder.

“Let’s go home,” he said.

They stood up and walked back to the armored Escalade. Marco’s men were already hauling a screaming Vanessa into one of the trailing vehicles.

The drive back to the estate was quiet, but this time, it wasn’t suffocating. It was the quiet of a storm finally breaking.

Lily fell asleep almost instantly in the warm backseat, her head resting on Emma’s lap.

Emma stroked her daughter’s hair, her eyes heavy with exhaustion.

“What happens now?” Emma asked quietly, looking at Luca in the driver’s seat.

Luca met her eyes in the rearview mirror.

“Now, you stop running,” Luca said.

They pulled through the iron gates of the Moretti estate. The house was blazing with light, but it no longer felt like a prison to Emma.

Vincent Moretti was standing on the front steps, waiting for them.

When Luca stopped the car, Vincent walked down the steps.

Emma carefully opened the door, carrying the sleeping Lily in her arms.

Vincent looked at the little girl. The last remaining child of the Romano bloodline. Tears welled up in the old mobster’s eyes.

He took off his coat—the coat Vanessa had stolen—and draped it gently over Lily to keep her warm against the night air.

“I’m sorry, Emmaline,” Vincent whispered, looking at Emma with total sincerity. “I failed your mother. I spent twenty years hiding you instead of protecting you. I’m so sorry.”

Emma looked at the man who had pulled her from the fire. She saw the guilt that had aged him, the heavy burden of a war he hadn’t wanted to fight.

“You saved us,” Emma said softly. “That’s what matters.”
