Chapter 6 - SERENA’S LAST LIE

Serena arrived after sunset.

This time she wasn’t wearing diamonds.

No silk gown.

No photographers.

Just black trousers, a camel coat, and the expression of a woman who finally understood that beauty could not negotiate with evidence.

Two federal agents accompanied her.

Gabriel had surprised everyone.

He hadn’t sent his men.

He had called the authorities.

Again.

I began to realize what that meant.

He wasn’t merely protecting the boys.

He was dismantling the rules he had lived by.

The rules that had destroyed us.

Serena entered the library.

I was already there.

“So dramatic,” she said.

I almost admired her nerve.

Gabriel stood near the fireplace.

Dominic leaned against the wall.

The agents remained outside.

Gabriel placed the recorder on the table.

Serena’s face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

“I don’t know what that is.”

Gabriel pressed play.

Her own voice answered her.

“Which one?”

She closed her eyes.

When it ended, Gabriel looked at her.

“Tell me why.”

She laughed.

It sounded exhausted.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

Serena looked at me.

“This was never about her.”

“Interesting,” I said. “Because you destroyed my marriage, hid my children from their father, and helped someone kidnap my son.”

“I never told Caleb to hurt him.”

I stood.

“Do you actually expect that distinction to save you?”

“No.”

For the first time, Serena looked tired rather than glamorous.

She turned toward Gabriel.

“Vincent found me when I was twenty-four.”

Gabriel said nothing.

“My father had lost everything. Hotels. Houses. Reputation. We were drowning in debt.”

She laughed softly.

“You remember meeting me at that charity auction?”

“Yes.”

“It wasn’t an accident.”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

“Vincent put you there.”

“Yes.”

“What was the plan?”

“To make you trust me.”

“By sleeping with me?”

Her eyes flashed.

“You weren’t difficult to seduce.”

The sentence landed exactly where she intended.

I looked away.

Gabriel didn’t.

“No,” he said.

“I wasn’t.”

Serena seemed disappointed that he wouldn’t defend himself.

She continued.

“Vincent said Claire was convincing you to go legitimate. If you sold the waterfront companies, half his income disappeared.”

“So he wanted her gone.”

“He wanted you angry at her.”

Gabriel’s expression sharpened.

“Angry how?”

Serena smiled.

“Remember the financial report you found in Claire’s desk?”

My stomach dropped.

I remembered.

Gabriel had accused me of secretly meeting with a federal accountant.

It became the ugliest fight of our marriage.

“I never put that file there,” I whispered.

Serena looked at me.

“I did.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“You told him I was cooperating with investigators.”

“I suggested you might be.”

“You forged the emails.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel stepped toward her.

Dominic moved slightly, ready.

But Gabriel stopped himself.

“All those fights.”

Serena shrugged.

“You were already fighting.”

Again, cruelly, she was right.

Manipulation had widened cracks.

It hadn’t created every crack.

“And the night in my office?” Gabriel asked.

Serena’s smile returned.

“You kissed me.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t force you.”

“I know.”

“Claire saw us because Vincent told me she was coming.”

I stared at her.

My blood ran cold.

“You knew I was in the elevator?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel looked as if the floor shifted beneath him.

Serena continued.

“You needed to destroy the marriage completely. If Claire merely suspected, you might reconcile.”

“So you made sure she saw.”

“Yes.”

“And the divorce?”

“That part was you.”

Gabriel flinched.

Serena smiled.

“I didn’t force you to call your attorney.”

“No.”

His voice was flat.

“You didn’t.”

For perhaps the first time, I realized Gabriel understood redemption required owning the part nobody else could carry for him.

Serena could be a villain.

Vincent could manipulate.

But Gabriel had chosen betrayal.

That truth mattered.

“Then Claire got pregnant,” Serena continued.

“Vincent panicked.”

“Because of the trust,” Dominic said.

“Yes.”

“Why not kill me then?” Gabriel asked.

Serena looked almost offended.

“Because I loved you.”

Silence.

She looked at me.

“I know you don’t believe that.”

“I believe you loved what being with him gave you.”

Serena’s mouth hardened.

“Is that really so different?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel answered.

Serena looked at him.

“Yes,” he repeated.

“It is.”

Her eyes filled.

“You would have gone back to her.”

“If I knew she was carrying my children?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

That surprised everyone.

He looked at me.

“I hope I would have.”

Then back to Serena.

“But I was still the man who had just cheated on his wife. Claire might not have taken me back.”

I wouldn’t have.

Not then.

Perhaps not now.

Serena laughed bitterly.

“Exactly. So what difference did it make?”

“Five years.”

Gabriel’s answer was immediate.

“You stole five years from my sons.”

“And Claire?”

“What about her?”

“She stole the same years.”

My head snapped toward her.

Gabriel didn’t answer.

Serena smiled at me.

“There it is.”

She stepped closer.

“The saint.”

“Stop,” Gabriel said.

“No. She wants truth? Give her truth.”

Serena pointed at me.

“She found out she was carrying your children and chose silence.”

My throat tightened.

“She changed their names.”

“She moved.”

“She made sure you never knew.”

“Serena.”

Gabriel’s warning was sharper.

But I lifted my hand.

“She’s right.”

He looked at me.

I forced myself not to look away.

“I chose silence.”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

“I was hurt. I was angry. I was terrified.”

“You had every reason.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I had reasons. That isn’t the same thing.”

Gabriel stared.

“I should have told you.”

It was the first time I had admitted it aloud.

Not to my father.

Not to myself.

“You deserved to know.”

His voice was barely audible.

“Thank you.”

“But.”

I stepped closer.

“You are not going to turn that admission into ownership.”

“I won’t.”

“You don’t suddenly get half their lives.”

“I know.”

“You don’t become Dad because a laboratory says so.”

“I know.”

“You earn it.”

Gabriel’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Serena watched us.

Something inside her seemed to snap.

“You think this becomes a family now?”

Nobody answered.

“You think he changes because three little boys look like him?”

Her voice rose.

“He is Gabriel Cross.”

Then she turned toward me.

“He will ruin them the way his father ruined him.”

Gabriel became still.

That landed.

Serena knew where to cut him.

“You know I’m right,” she whispered.

Gabriel looked toward the doorway.

Noah stood there.

None of us had heard him arrive.

His stuffed dinosaur was tucked under one arm.

“What did Grandpa do?”

Gabriel’s face went pale.

I rushed toward him.

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

Noah looked at Gabriel.

“Did your dad teach you bad stuff?”

No one breathed.

Gabriel lowered himself until they were eye level.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“To believe being feared mattered more than being loved.”

Noah frowned.

“That’s dumb.”

A strangled laugh escaped Dominic.

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Are you gonna teach us that?”

Gabriel looked at my son for a long moment.

Then shook his head.

“No.”

“What are you gonna teach us?”

Gabriel’s voice broke.

“If your mother lets me?”

Noah nodded.

“How to make really terrible pancakes.”

My son smiled.

Serena looked away.

A federal agent appeared at the door.

“We need Ms. Vale.”

Serena straightened.

Gabriel did not stop them.

As they placed her under arrest for conspiracy related to the kidnapping, she looked back.

“Vincent will kill you before Monday.”

Gabriel’s expression didn’t change.

“No.”

He put one hand gently on Noah’s shoulder.

“He won’t.”

The agent led Serena away.

Dominic’s phone rang almost immediately.

He listened.

Then looked at Gabriel.

“Vincent just called an emergency meeting of the Cross board.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed.

Dominic continued.

“He’s invoking the incapacity clause.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

Gabriel looked at me.

“It means while I was trying to save my family, Vincent decided to steal my empire.”
