Chapter 8 - THE GUN IN THE SHADOWS

I stared at Luca in absolute shock, my arms still supporting a bleeding Daniel.
"Luca?" I gasped. "How are you here? You were arrested!"
Luca didn't look like a man who had just spent the night in a federal holding cell. He wore a sharp black suit, his dark hair immaculate, but his eyes were filled with a terrifying, contained violence.
He holstered his weapon and walked quickly toward us.
"The arrest was a charade," Luca said, taking Daniel from my arms and handing him off to two medics who immediately appeared from behind the SUVs.
"A charade?" I repeated, my mind struggling to keep up.
"I knew the police captain was on Vanessa's payroll," Luca explained, his voice grim. "I let them arrest me so I could get inside the precinct. Once I was in, my loyal captains surrounded the building. We gave the corrupt officers a choice: step down, or start a war they couldn't win."
He looked at me, a flash of profound relief crossing his face.
"The charges were dropped an hour ago. Elias called me on a secure line and told me you were in the house. I came back to pull you out."
He reached out and gently gripped my shoulders, checking me for injuries.
"Are you hurt, Olivia?"
"I'm fine," I promised, my hands trembling as I held up the red leather book. "Luca. I found it. Michael's ledger."
Luca took the book from my hands. He didn't open it. He just stared at the red leather, the weight of his brother's sacrifice settling heavily on his shoulders.
"Thank you," Luca whispered.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the delivery bay slammed open.
Vanessa stepped out, her silver pistol raised.
She expected to find me and a wounded Daniel.
Instead, she found the mafia boss she thought was rotting in a cell, surrounded by a dozen heavily armed loyalists.
Vanessa froze. The color drained completely from her face.
Every single gun in the delivery bay was raised and pointed directly at her chest.
Luca turned slowly to face his fiancé.
He didn't draw his weapon. He didn't need to. The sheer, radiating power of the Don was enough to paralyze her.
"Hello, Vanessa," Luca said softly.
Vanessa lowered her gun, realizing she had walked into an unwinnable situation. But the Russian agent didn't beg. She stood tall, a cruel, mocking smile playing on her lips.
"You think this is over, Luca?" Vanessa sneered. "You think having a little book saves you?"
"It destroys you," Luca countered. "The FBI already has copies of the offshore accounts Elias intercepted. Your Russian handlers are being raided as we speak. You have nothing."
Vanessa laughed. It was a cold, hollow sound.
"I don't need the Russians," Vanessa said, looking directly at me. "Because I have the key to Antonio's billions."
Luca frowned, stepping slightly in front of me. "What are you talking about?"
"Ask the maid," Vanessa taunted. "Ask her what she found in the back of the ledger."
Luca looked back at me.
My heart pounded. I reached into my apron pocket and pulled out the faded photograph of my mother and Antonio Moretti.
I handed it to Luca.
Luca looked at the picture. His brow furrowed in confusion, and then, as the realization hit him, his eyes widened in absolute shock.
He looked from the photograph to my face, tracing the similarities he had never noticed before.
"You're my sister," Luca breathed, the words barely audible.
"Half-sister," Vanessa corrected maliciously. "And the only person whose DNA can unlock the blind trust Antonio set up. If you kill me, Luca, my dead-man's switch activates. The Russians will hunt Olivia to the ends of the earth to get that money."
Vanessa raised her chin, victorious.
"So, here is the deal," she said. "You let me walk out of here. You let me take the girl. And I leave you your miserable little Chicago territory."
Luca didn't say a word.
He just stared at the woman who had murdered his brother, infiltrated his home, and threatened his newfound sister.
Then, Luca began to laugh.
It wasn't a happy laugh. It was dark, rich, and utterly terrifying.
Vanessa's smile faltered. "What's so funny?"
"You spent two years trying to steal an empire," Luca said, shaking his head in pity. "You murdered my brother over a secret trust fund."
Luca reached into his inner jacket pocket.
He pulled out a heavy, ornate gold key.
"Did you really think my father would leave billions of dollars locked behind a DNA sequence without leaving me a manual override?" Luca asked mockingly.
Vanessa went pale.
"The night my father died," Luca continued, stepping toward her, "he gave me this key. He told me he had set up a blind trust for a daughter he couldn't protect in public. But he gave me the power to drain the accounts if the family was ever threatened."
Luca stopped a few feet away from her.
"I emptied those accounts three years ago, Vanessa. The money is gone. Donated to charities and legitimate investments. There is no Russian payout."
Vanessa stared at the gold key, her entire world collapsing around her.
She had murdered for nothing.
With a shriek of pure, unadulterated rage, Vanessa raised her pistol and aimed it directly at my head.
"Then she dies anyway!" Vanessa screamed.
BANG.
The gunshot was deafening.
I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the impact.
But I didn't fall.
I opened my eyes.
Vanessa dropped her gun, clutching her chest. Blood blossomed across her pristine white coat.
She stumbled backward, falling to her knees, and then collapsed onto the concrete floor.
I looked at Luca. He hadn't drawn his weapon.
I looked past him.
Standing in the shadows of the delivery tunnel, holding a smoking sniper rifle, was Elias Thorne.
The man who had faked his death two years ago walked slowly into the light.
He looked at Vanessa's lifeless body, then at Luca.

"The debt is paid, my boy," Elias said softly.
