Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH IN THE BLACK LEATHER LEDGER

The echo of the gunshot faded into the cool morning air.

I stood paralyzed, staring at Vanessa’s lifeless body on the concrete floor. The woman who had terrorized me, who had ordered my brother’s kidnapping, who had murdered Michael Moretti... was finally gone.

Luca didn’t look at her. He turned to Elias Thorne.

The mafia boss walked across the delivery bay and pulled the older man into a fierce, desperate embrace.

"I thought I lost you, old friend," Luca whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"I couldn't leave you to fight the Russians alone," Elias replied, patting Luca's back.

Elias pulled away and looked at me. His hardened eyes softened with genuine respect.

"You did beautifully, Olivia," Elias said. "You saved this family."

Luca turned back to me. The terrifying aura of the Don was gone, replaced by a profound, overwhelming tenderness.

He walked over and gently took the photograph of my mother from my trembling hand.

"My father loved your mother very much," Luca said softly. "I remember him sneaking away on weekends when I was a child. He always came back happier. I never knew why."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes. "He never claimed me. We lived in poverty."

"He couldn't claim you, Olivia," Luca explained, his voice breaking. "In our world, weakness is exploited. If his enemies knew he had a secret daughter, they would have used you as leverage. He kept you a secret to keep you alive."

Luca gently wiped a tear from my cheek.

"And Michael found out," Luca continued, the tragedy finally making sense. "Michael found the ledger. He found the truth about you. He was going to bring you into the family, to protect you properly. But Vanessa found out first."

My heart ached for a brother I had never met. Michael had died trying to protect a sister he didn't even know.

"You don't have to hide anymore, Olivia," Luca promised, his dark eyes fierce with loyalty. "You are a Moretti. This house is your home. You will never want for anything ever again."

The heavy, oppressive weight I had carried my entire life—the overdue bills, the constant fear, the desperation—finally lifted from my shoulders.

I threw my arms around Luca's neck, sobbing quietly into his suit jacket.

For the first time in my life, I had a family. A fiercely protective, powerful brother who would burn the world down to keep me safe.

Three weeks later.

The Moretti estate had transformed. The dark, brooding atmosphere was gone, replaced by light and warmth. The heavy curtains were thrown open.

I was no longer wearing a maid's uniform. I wore a simple, elegant silk dress, standing in the grand foyer.

My brother, Sam, walked through the front doors, looking healthier than he had in months. The medical bills from his motorcycle accident had been paid in full by Luca, and Sam had accepted a job managing the estate's massive fleet of cars.

"Hey, sis," Sam grinned, pulling me into a hug. "Leo is outside demanding you come play soccer."

I laughed. "Tell him I'll be out in five minutes."

Sam headed out to the gardens.

I walked into Luca's private study.

Luca was sitting behind his mahogany desk, going over legitimate business contracts. With Vanessa's Russian contacts exposed, Luca had spent the last three weeks aggressively dismantling the syndicate's illegal operations, moving the family entirely into real estate and philanthropy.

"You're working too hard," I smiled, stepping into the room.

Luca looked up, a bright, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face.

"Just finishing the last of the transfers," Luca said, setting his pen down. "How does it feel to be a billionaire heiress, Olivia?"

I rolled my eyes playfully. "It feels terrifying. I still look for the price tags on groceries."

Luca chuckled, standing up and walking around the desk.

"You'll get used to it," he promised, pulling me into a warm hug.

He kissed the top of my head, a protective, brotherly gesture that filled my heart with peace.

"Actually," Luca said, pulling back slightly. "There's something I need to give you. Elias dropped it off this morning before he left for Europe."

Luca walked over to the safe behind his desk. He opened it and pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden box.

He handed it to me.

"What is it?" I asked, admiring the craftsmanship.

"Elias said it belonged to our father. He held onto it after the crash, waiting for the right time to give it to me. But he said it isn't for me. It's for you."

I frowned, tracing the wood grain.

I carefully unlatched the brass clasp and opened the lid.

Resting on a bed of black velvet was a breathtaking, vintage diamond engagement ring. The band was gold, intricately woven with tiny emeralds.

My breath caught in my throat.

"It's beautiful," I whispered. "But why would our father leave an engagement ring for me?"

Luca reached into the box and pulled out a small, folded piece of parchment tucked beneath the velvet.

He handed it to me.

"Read it," Luca said softly.

I unfolded the aged paper. The handwriting was elegant, written by a man who knew he was running out of time.

My dearest Olivia,

If you are reading this, I am gone, and the truth of your bloodline has finally been revealed.

I am sorry I could not be a father to you in the light. I lived in a world of shadows, and I kept you out of it to keep you pure.

This ring belonged to your grandmother. I always dreamed of giving it to the man who would one day ask for your hand. But since I cannot be there, I leave it to you.

But there is a condition attached to this ring, my sweet girl.

Forty years ago, to secure the safety of our family in Chicago, I made a pact with the Falcone family of Sicily. A blood pact.

The debt must be paid.
