Chapter 12 - THE NEW BEGINNING

Six months later.
The spring air blowing off Lake Michigan was warm and sweet.
The Moretti estate gardens were in full bloom, bursting with vibrant colors. The string quartet played softly on the terrace, and the champagne flowed freely.
But this time, there were no syndicate bosses disguised as guests. There were no bombs hidden in coats.
It was just family, close friends, and the loyal staff who had stood by us through the darkest night of our lives.
I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in the master bedroom, smoothing down the intricate lace of my white wedding dress.
I wasn't a housekeeper anymore. I was Claire Moretti.
There was a soft knock on the door.
Daniel, the security chief, stepped into the room. He looked incredibly sharp in his tailored tuxedo. Since the night of the attack, Daniel had become like an older brother to me.
“You look beautiful, Claire,” Daniel smiled warmly. “Are you ready?”
“I’m ready,” I beamed, picking up my bouquet of white roses.
Daniel offered me his arm, and we walked down the grand marble staircase together.
The guests stood as I entered the garden. But my eyes were fixed solely on the end of the aisle.
Luca stood there, looking devastatingly handsome in his black tuxedo. The dangerous, closed-off mafia boss I had met nearly a year ago was gone. In his place was a man who looked completely at peace, his eyes shining with pure, absolute love as he watched me walk toward him.
Standing right beside him, acting as the Best Man, was Mateo.
The little boy gave me a huge, toothy grin as I reached the altar.
Daniel handed me off to Luca.
Luca took my hands in his, his thumbs gently stroking my knuckles.
“You are my light, Claire,” Luca whispered so only I could hear.
We exchanged our vows under the warm Chicago sun, promising to protect each other, to trust each other, and to build a future free of the shadows of the past.
When the priest finally said the words, Luca pulled me into a kiss that made the entire world melt away. The guests cheered, and Mateo threw a handful of flower petals directly into the air with a shout of joy.
Later that evening, as the reception hummed around us, Luca pulled me away from the dance floor and out onto the quiet balcony overlooking the lake.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
“I have something for you,” Luca said softly.
“Luca, you’ve already given me everything,” I laughed, touching my wedding band.
“Open it,” he insisted, a gentle smile on his face.
I took the box and opened the lid.
Inside was a delicate, vintage silver locket. It was stunningly beautiful, with intricate floral engravings.
“It belonged to my mother,” Luca explained, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s the oldest Moretti family heirloom. It’s supposed to be passed down to the woman who holds the heart of the family.”
He took the locket from the box and carefully clasped it around my neck. The cool silver rested perfectly against my collarbone.
I looked up at him, tears of overwhelming happiness filling my eyes.
“Thank you,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“No, Claire,” Luca murmured, kissing my forehead. “Thank you. For staying.”
We stood on the balcony, watching the stars reflect over the dark water of the lake.
I had started my life in this house carrying a silver tray and wearing a black apron, terrified of making a mistake.

Now, I was wearing the family heirloom, holding the hand of the man I loved, with a son who adored me sleeping peacefully inside.
The past was finally closed. The future was ours.
