Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

“Get away from her!” Luca’s voice thundered over the sound of the freezing river water splashing against the canal banks.
Behind Luca, four more Moretti vehicles skidded to a halt. Daniel and twenty heavily armed, fiercely loyal guards poured out, instantly surrounding Salvatore’s men.
Answer one: Luca had found the half of the drawing in his pocket. He had tracked the landmarks and orchestrated the ambush perfectly.
Salvatore’s soldiers realized they were outgunned and outmaneuvered. They dropped their shovels and raised their hands in surrender.
Don Salvatore stared at Luca, his face pale with fury.
“You broke the truce, Luca,” Salvatore spat.
“I didn't break anything,” Luca said calmly, racking the shotgun. “Claire made a deal with you. You left the estate. The deal was concluded. What happens now is self-defense.”
Luca walked directly up to Salvatore.
“The Chicago syndicate council is finished,” Luca declared. “You are retiring tonight, Salvatore. You will hand over your territories to my legitimate shipping company, and you will leave the state. If you ever come back, I will finish what we started tonight.”
Salvatore looked at the shotgun pointed at his chest. He looked at his surrendered men.
The old boss nodded once, bitterly accepting his defeat.
Vanessa, realizing she was completely abandoned, panicked. She lunged toward me, trying to grab me as a hostage.
But I wasn't the scared housekeeper anymore.
As Vanessa lunged, I sidestepped, grabbing her arm and twisting it sharply behind her back, driving her face-first into the hood of the armored truck.
“You’re finished, Vanessa,” I whispered into her ear.
Daniel jogged over, clicking a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Vanessa’s wrists.
“Take them away,” Luca ordered.
The police sirens wailed in the distance, coordinated by Daniel to clean up the syndicate mess safely.
As the authorities arrived to take Salvatore and Vanessa into custody, the chaotic night finally settled into a peaceful, freezing quiet.
Luca dropped his shotgun on the hood of the truck. He walked over to me. His expensive suit was ruined, his face was bruised, but he looked like the most beautiful man I had ever seen.
Without a word, Luca wrapped his arms around me, pulling me flush against his chest. I buried my face in his neck, breathing in the scent of cedar and gunpowder.
“You almost gave me a heart attack, Claire Bennett,” Luca murmured, resting his chin on my head.
“I knew you’d find the paper,” I smiled against his collar.
“Let’s go home,” Luca said softly.
When we returned to the estate, the sun was just beginning to rise over Lake Michigan. The guests were gone. The damage was being cleaned.
I walked into the sunroom.
Mateo was asleep on the sofa, covered with a thick blanket.
I sat gently on the edge of the cushion, brushing his dark hair from his forehead. The little boy stirred, opening his brown eyes.
“Claire?” Mateo whispered sleepily.
“I’m here, sweetheart,” I said. “The bad people are gone. You’re safe now.”
Mateo smiled, reaching out to hold my hand, and instantly fell back asleep.
Luca leaned against the doorframe, watching us. The heavy, guarded look he usually wore was completely gone.
He walked over and sat beside me on the sofa.
“So,” Luca said quietly, looking at my ruined apron. “I need a new household manager. My last one tried to blow up my house.”
I laughed, a genuine, relieved sound. “Are you offering me a promotion, Mr. Moretti?”
“I’m offering you whatever you want, Claire,” Luca said, his eyes turning deeply serious. “You saved my son. You saved my life. You don't ever have to work again if you don't want to. But I want you to stay. Here. With us.”
I looked at the sleeping boy, and then at the man who had risked everything to protect me.
“I’d like to stay,” I whispered.
May you like
Luca leaned in, his lips meeting mine in a soft, perfect kiss that tasted like a new beginning.
