Chapter 10 - THE HEIRLOOM COAT

Two weeks later.
The mansion was finally repaired. The shattered glass had been swept away, and the sub-basement vault was functioning normally again.
I was officially the Estate Manager now, trading my black uniform for tailored blouses. But more importantly, I was part of the family. Mateo followed me around like a shadow, and Luca and I shared quiet, perfect evenings together after the staff went home.
One afternoon, I was organizing the third-floor cedar closets, taking inventory of the winter clothing to donate to charity.
I pulled out a heavy, beautiful cashmere coat. It was a woman’s coat, smelling faintly of lavender.
“That belonged to Elena,” Luca’s voice said softly from the doorway.
I turned around. Luca was standing there, a bittersweet smile on his face.
Elena was his late wife. She had died of a sudden illness five years ago when Mateo was just three.
“I’m sorry,” I said, moving to put the coat back. “I shouldn't have touched it.”
“It’s okay, Claire,” Luca said, walking into the room. “She would have wanted it donated. She was the kindest person I ever knew.”
I ran my hand over the soft cashmere. As I did, I felt something stiff inside the inner lining of the pocket.
I reached inside and pulled out a sealed, cream-colored envelope.
It was identical to the envelope Vanessa had tried to make me deliver to the basement on the night of the party.
Answer one: Vanessa hadn't created the envelope or the instructions herself. She had found something Elena left behind and repurposed it for her own heist.
“Luca,” I handed him the envelope. “This has your name on it.”
Luca stared at the handwriting. “It’s Elena’s handwriting.”
Open two: What did Elena write five years ago that Vanessa thought was valuable enough to steal?
Luca broke the seal. He pulled out a single sheet of stationary.
He read it in silence. As he read, his eyes filled with tears, a rare display of raw emotion for the former syndicate boss.
He handed the letter to me.

My dearest Luca, the letter read. If you are reading this, the doctors were right, and I am gone. Please do not close your heart. I know the dark world you operate in, but you are a good man. Mateo needs a mother who will fight for him. I am leaving my personal jewelry collection in the sub-basement vault for whoever is brave enough to love you both next.
