Chapter 12 - THE FAMILY WE CHOOSE

“Emily, stop,” Luca said firmly, turning me around.
“Luca, I have to go, she’s packing boxes on the sidewalk—”
“Emily, look at me,” he commanded softly.
I looked up, tears of frustration in my eyes.
“You are not going to a sidewalk,” Luca said. He pulled out his phone and dialed his head of security. “Marco. Take the black SUV to Emily’s mother’s apartment. Help her pack everything. Then bring her here.”
I gasped. “Luca, no. You don’t have to do that.”
“I’m doing it,” Luca said, hanging up the phone. He looked at me with an intensity that left me breathless. “Your mother is not sleeping in a motel. She’s staying in the east guest wing. And she can stay there for as long as she wants.”
“I can’t accept that,” I argued, though my heart was swelling. “You’ve done too much for me already.”
“You gave me my son back,” Luca said fiercely. “You gave me my life back. A guest room is nothing, Emily.”
Just then, Noah ran into the foyer, his backpack slung over one shoulder.
“Where is everyone going?” the little boy asked, looking between us.
Luca knelt down. “Emily’s mom is coming to stay with us for a little while, buddy. Is that okay with you?”
Noah’s eyes lit up. “Can she make those Italian cookies Emily makes?”
I laughed, a wet, tearful sound. “She makes them way better than I do, Noah.”
Noah ran over and hugged my legs tightly. “I’m glad you’re not leaving, Emily. I want you to stay forever.”
I looked down at the little boy, my heart breaking open with pure love. I stroked his hair, realizing that this child felt like a piece of my own soul.
I looked up at Luca.
He was watching me, his expression open, vulnerable, and completely unguarded.
“Stay forever,” Luca echoed softly, his eyes locking onto mine.
He stood up, walking slowly toward me until there was barely an inch between us.
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out Claire’s silver rosary.
He gently took my hand and pressed the rosary into my palm, curling my fingers around it.
“Claire wanted the woman who came after her to feel like she belonged,” Luca whispered, his thumb brushing my cheek. “You belong here, Emily. With us.”
Tears streamed down my face, but they weren't tears of sadness or fear. They were tears of profound, overwhelming joy.
I looked at the rosary, then at Noah smiling up at me, and finally at Luca.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I whispered.
Luca smiled, a real, radiant smile that reached his eyes.
He leaned down and pressed his lips softly against mine. It wasn’t rushed. It was a promise. A gentle, deeply emotional vow that the darkness was finally gone, and the sunlight was here to stay.
I kissed him back, holding onto his waist, feeling the solid, steady beating of his heart against my chest.
A year ago, I walked into this mansion as a broken, terrified maid.
Today, I stood in the sunlight, holding the hand of the man I loved, and the little boy who called me family.

We had survived the storm.
And our beautiful life was just beginning.
