Chapter 9 - THE DAWN OF TRUTH

The silence in the cedar closet was completely overwhelming.
I collapsed onto the floor, clutching the letter to my chest, sobbing uncontrollably.
For four years, I had carried the shame of being expelled. I had worked double shifts, scrubbing floors and serving rich people, believing I was a failure. My mother had taken second jobs to help me survive.
And all this time, it was a lie.
Vanessa had destroyed my life just to clear her path to Luca.
But Claire had reached through time to bring me back.
Luca dropped to his knees on the floor beside me.
He didn’t say a word. He just wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into a tight, grounding embrace.
For the first time since I stepped foot in this mansion, I wasn’t the maid. I was a human being who had been deeply wronged, being held by a man who finally understood exactly what I had sacrificed.
“She ruined you,” Luca whispered against my hair, his voice thick with guilt and sorrow. “She brought you into my house as a servant, knowing she had destroyed your dreams. And I let her treat you like dirt.”
“You didn’t know,” I cried against his shoulder.
“I should have known,” Luca said fiercely, pulling back to look me in the eyes. “I should have seen the way you cared for Noah. The way you protected him tonight. You have more courage in your heart than anyone I have ever met, Emily.”
Noah crawled off the ottoman and hugged my waist.
“Don’t cry, Emily,” the little boy sniffled. “You’re my favorite person.”
I laughed through my tears, hugging him back tightly.
Downstairs, the front doors burst open. The sound of heavy boots and police radios echoed up the grand staircase.
Luca stood up. He offered me his hand and helped me to my feet.
“Come with me,” Luca said.
We walked out of the bedroom and stood at the top of the grand staircase.
In the foyer below, four police officers were slapping handcuffs on Vanessa Bellini.
She looked up and saw us.
“Luca!” she screamed, struggling against the officers. “You can’t do this! I own you! I’m going to ruin you!”
Luca looked down at her with absolute disgust.
“You own nothing,” Luca said clearly, his voice echoing through the massive house. “You are a thief, a fraud, and a murderer. You will rot in a cell for what you did to my wife. And you will never speak my son’s name again.”
The officers dragged Vanessa out the front door.
The heavy doors slammed shut behind her.
The nightmare was finally over.
Luca turned to me.
He gently reached out and unpinned the small white lace apron from my black uniform.
He let it fall to the floor.
“You are no longer an employee in this house, Emily Carter,” Luca said softly.
I looked up at him, my heart skipping a beat. “Sir?”
“My lawyers will file a massive lawsuit against the hospital for your wrongful termination by tomorrow morning,” Luca promised, his eyes burning with determination. “Your student debt will be wiped out. Your nursing license will be restored. You will never have to serve another table for the rest of your life.”
Tears welled in my eyes again. “I don’t know what to say.”
Noah grabbed my hand. “Does this mean you’re leaving?” he asked, his voice filled with sudden panic.
I looked down at the little boy. I thought about leaving this house, leaving Noah, leaving Luca.
The thought physically hurt.
Luca knelt down next to Noah. “Emily doesn’t have to work here anymore, buddy. But if she wants to stay... she can stay as family.”
May you like
Luca looked up at me, his eyes softening into something warm and hopeful.
“Will you stay, Emily?” he asked. “Not as a maid. But as part of our lives?”
