Chapter 2 - THE MAN AT THE TABLE

The crystal chandeliers above the dining table seemed to hum in the dead silence of the room.
Forty guests stared at the man sitting immediately to Luca’s right.
Julian Rossi.
Thirty-six years old. Luca’s oldest friend. His most trusted advisor. The man who had managed the Moretti family’s legitimate businesses for the past decade.
Julian’s face had drained of all color. His wine glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the edge of the mahogany table. Dark red liquid spilled across the white tablecloth like blood.
The little girl, still holding her cheap silver bracelet, didn't seem to notice the tension.
“Daddy!” she cried again, taking a step toward him. “You didn't tell us you were having a party!”
Julian didn't move. He stared at the child as if she were a ghost.
Vanessa’s hands began to shake violently. She took a step toward her daughter, her voice a frantic, desperate whisper.
“Lily, stop. Stop talking right now.”
But Luca Moretti had already turned.
He didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. But the sheer, terrifying stillness of his posture made the nearest guests push their chairs back from the table.
“Julian,” Luca said quietly.
Julian swallowed hard, keeping his eyes fixed on the spilled wine. “Luca. I can explain.”
“Can you?”
“It’s a misunderstanding.”
Helen, the elderly woman standing beside me, gripped my arm so tightly I could feel her fingernails through my uniform sleeve.
“A misunderstanding?” Helen’s voice trembled with sudden, maternal rage. “You came to our apartment every Sunday for a year. You brought groceries. You paid my rent. You told this child you were going to adopt her once you and Vanessa were married.”
The guests gasped.
Luca took one slow step toward his best friend.
“You told them your name was Luca Moretti?”
Julian finally looked up. His eyes darted toward Vanessa, silently pleading for help.
But Vanessa was backing away, her perfectly manicured hands covering her mouth.
“I did it to protect you, Luca,” Julian said, his voice cracking. “Vanessa asked me to.”
Luca stopped. “Protect me from what?”
Vanessa let out a strangled sob. “Julian, shut up!”
“From her past!” Julian shouted, standing up so quickly his chair tipped backward and crashed to the floor. “You’re the head of the Moretti family, Luca! You couldn't be seen marrying a woman with a hidden child and a mother living in poverty! It would ruin your reputation!”
Luca’s expression didn't change. “So you pretended to be me.”
“I kept them quiet!” Julian pleaded. “I paid them off using your name so they would think you were taking care of them. I was buying time until Vanessa and I could figure out how to send them away permanently.”
“Send us away?” Helen whispered, her hand flying to her chest.
Lily looked at her grandmother, her bottom lip trembling. “Grandma? Why is Daddy yelling?”
I couldn't stand it anymore. I stepped in front of the little girl, shielding her from the terrifying men in the room. “It’s okay, Lily,” I whispered, gently touching her shoulder. “Don't look at them.”
Luca looked at me shielding the child, and something shifted in his dark eyes. A profound, devastating realization.
He turned back to Julian.
“You didn't do this to protect my reputation, Julian,” Luca said softly. “You did it because you’re sleeping with my fiancée.”
The room erupted into shocked murmurs.
Vanessa screamed. “Luca, no! That’s a lie!”
But Julian didn't deny it. He stared at Luca, his chest heaving.
“When did it start?” Luca asked, his voice still terrifyingly calm.
“Two years ago,” Julian confessed, the fight draining out of him. “Before you even met her.”
Luca nodded slowly. He looked at Vanessa, who was sobbing hysterically, the red silk of her gown suddenly looking cheap and theatrical.
“So the engagement,” Luca said, “was a setup.”
“We needed the money,” Julian whispered. “You know the syndicate is bleeding, Luca. The old bosses are demanding their cuts. I owe them millions. Vanessa was supposed to marry you, secure the accounts, and then we were going to leave.”
Vanessa lunged forward, grabbing Luca’s arm. “He forced me! Luca, I swear on my life, Julian threatened to hurt Lily if I didn't go along with it! He’s a monster!”
Julian laughed. A bitter, ugly sound.
“I threatened her?” Julian reached into the breast pocket of his tailored suit.
Instantly, the three security guards standing by the doors drew their weapons, aiming them directly at Julian’s head.
“Stand down,” Luca ordered without looking at them.
Julian pulled his hand out of his pocket.
He wasn't holding a weapon.
He was holding a small, worn photograph.
He tossed it onto the dining table. It landed perfectly beside the little girl's cheap silver bracelet.
“Tell him what you really threatened her with, Vanessa,” Julian sneered. “Tell him why you needed my help to get inside his house.”
Luca looked down at the photograph.
I was standing close enough to see it.
It was a picture of a rusted, heavy iron key.
But it wasn't the key that made my blood run cold. It was the background of the photograph.
The key was resting on a hospital bed.
And lying in that bed, covered in white sheets, was Luca’s first wife, Caroline, taken just hours before she died in a mysterious car crash three years ago.
Luca picked up the photograph. His hands, which hadn't trembled all night, suddenly shook.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Where did you get this?”
Vanessa backed away, her eyes wide with absolute terror.
“I… I found it,” she stammered.
“Where?” Luca’s voice finally broke, a roar of sheer agony echoing off the crystal chandeliers. “Where did you get a picture of my dead wife’s safe key?!”
Before Vanessa could answer, Helen stepped forward.
The elderly woman’s face was pale, but her voice was steady.
“She didn't find it, Mr. Moretti,” Helen said quietly.
Luca turned to her.
Helen reached into her faded handbag.
“She took that picture in my living room.”
Helen pulled her hand out of her purse.
And resting in her wrinkled palm was the exact rusted iron key from the photograph.
