Chapter 12 - THE NEW BEGINNING

The mansion was swarming with federal agents.
Paramedics treated Luca’s minor cuts and burns in the back of an ambulance parked on the ruined lawn. I sat beside him, my hand securely locked in his, refusing to let go for even a second.
Vincenzo Romano walked over to us, accompanied by the lead FBI agent. The old Don looked at Luca with a profound, staggering respect.
“You held them off,” Vincenzo said, his gruff voice softening. “You kept my daughter safe.”
“I promised I would,” Luca replied, wincing slightly as a paramedic bandaged his forearm.
The FBI agent nodded. “The Pakhan was arrested in New York twenty minutes ago based on the wiretaps we secured from this sting. The Bratva is finished in Chicago, Mr. Moretti. Your slate is officially wiped clean.”
Luca let out a deep breath, the invisible weight of a decade of secrets finally lifting from his shoulders. He looked at me, a soft, weary smile touching his lips.
“It’s over,” he whispered.
“It really is,” I smiled back, resting my head against his uninjured shoulder.
“Daddy!”
We both turned as Lily ran out the front doors, bypassing the yellow crime scene tape. Helen was right behind her, chatting animatedly with an FBI agent who was offering to make her a cup of tea.
Lily launched herself into Luca’s good arm, burying her face in his chest. “You’re okay! Grandma hit the bad man with a candlestick!”
Luca laughed, a bright, genuine sound that I had never heard before tonight. “I heard. Your grandmother is a very brave woman.”
He looked over Lily’s head, his eyes meeting mine. “And so are you.”
Three months later.
The late summer breeze rolled off Lake Michigan, carrying the smell of fresh rain and blooming hydrangeas.
I stood in the master bedroom of the newly renovated Moretti estate, looking at myself in the floor-length mirror.
I was wearing a simple, elegant white silk wedding gown.
My mother, finally free from hiding, stood behind me, gently fastening a delicate pearl necklace around my throat.
“You look beautiful, Hannah,” my mother whispered, wiping a tear from her eye.
“Thank you, Mom,” I smiled, turning to hug her.
There was a soft knock on the door.
Helen peeked her head in. She was wearing a gorgeous navy blue dress, looking every bit the proud matriarch.
“It’s time, sweetheart,” Helen beamed. “The guests are seated.”
I took a deep breath, smoothing the front of my dress.
I walked out of the bedroom and down the grand staircase.
The foyer had been completely repaired, the scars of the gunfight erased and replaced with towering arrangements of white lilies and roses.
Vincenzo stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking dashing in a tailored tuxedo. He offered me his arm.
“Ready, little bird?” my father asked, his blue eyes shining with pride.
“Ready,” I said, looping my arm through his.
The heavy oak doors opened, leading out to the massive back gardens where the ceremony was being held.
As we walked down the white runner, I looked at the crowd. There were no syndicate bosses. No armed guards. Just family, legitimate business partners, and the doctors and nurses who were helping us build the new charity hospital.
And standing at the end of the aisle, waiting for me under an archway of white flowers, was Luca.
He looked breathtaking in a classic black tuxedo. The darkness that had haunted his eyes for so long was completely gone.
Standing beside him as his "Best Man" was a beaming, twelve-year-old Lily, holding a small velvet pillow with two gold rings.
When Luca saw me, his breath caught. A single tear escaped his eye, tracking down his cheek.
My father walked me down the aisle and gently placed my hand in Luca’s.
“Take care of her, son,” Vincenzo whispered.
“With my life,” Luca promised.
The ceremony was short, sweet, and filled with laughter. When the officiant finally pronounced us husband and wife, Luca didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms and kissed me, dipping me slightly as the crowd erupted into cheers.
Later that evening, after the cake was cut and the band was playing a slow jazz tune, Luca led me away from the crowded dance floor to a quiet balcony overlooking the gardens.
The night was perfectly clear, the stars shining brightly over Chicago.
Luca stood behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. I leaned back into his solid warmth.
“Are you happy, Mrs. Moretti?” Luca murmured, kissing my neck.
I smiled, looking down at the gold wedding band on my finger.
I thought about the journey that had brought me here. A maid trying to pay her mother’s rent. A daughter discovering a hidden legacy. A woman fighting to survive a war she didn't start.
I had walked into this house looking for a paycheck.
I was staying as the heart of a family that had finally found its light.
“I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be,” I whispered.
Luca turned me around in his arms, his dark eyes filled with endless, unwavering devotion.
“And I am never letting you go,” he promised.
May you like
He kissed me again under the starlight, and for the first time in my life, I knew the shadows would never return.
