Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH UNVEILED

The pocket watch slipped from my fingers, hitting the concrete floor with a sharp clink.
“You saved me?” I whispered, my mind struggling to process the revelation.
Luca nodded, his dark eyes pleading for me to believe him. “I saw you playing in the courtyard of your family’s estate when we were teenagers. When my father gave the order to wipe the Romanos out, I couldn't let you die. I forged the alliance with the Bratva. They smuggled you and your mother out of Chicago in the trunk of a car the night the war started.”
Tears spilled hot down my cheeks.
My mother had told me a mysterious benefactor had helped us escape. She never knew who it was. She thought it was one of my father’s loyal captains.
It was Luca. He had carried the weight of that treason against his own family for a decade, just to keep a rival girl alive.
“I never knew what happened to you,” Luca continued, his voice thick with emotion. “Not until you walked into my house a year ago applying for a job. When I saw your name on the application, I nearly stopped breathing. I hired you to keep you close. To protect you.”
I covered my mouth with both hands, letting out a broken sob. Every act of kindness, every moment he stepped in to shield me from Vanessa’s cruelty—he hadn't just been a decent man. He had been my guardian angel for ten years.
“Touching reunion,” Nikolai coughed from the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder. “But it doesn't change the facts, Luca. You cut off our money. The Pakhan is furious. And he is not a patient man.”
Luca turned back to the Russian, his face hardening instantly. “I told your boss the deal was done. I paid my debt ten times over.”
“The Bratva decides when a debt is paid,” Nikolai sneered, spitting blood onto the concrete. “And the Pakhan decided to collect. Did you think I came here alone?”
Suddenly, the wail of a security alarm echoed through the massive house above us.
Red emergency lights began flashing in the basement stairwell.
“Perimeter breach,” an automated voice announced over the intercom. “Multiple hostiles detected.”
Luca cursed in Italian. He grabbed his shotgun from the floor and tossed me a small handgun from his ankle holster.
“Do you know how to use this?” Luca asked, pulling me toward the stairs.
I gripped the cold metal. “I learn fast.”
“Stay behind me.”
We raced up the splintered stairs to the main floor.
The grand foyer was chaos. Helen was clutching Lily in the center of the living room, her face pale with terror. Outside the massive arched windows, three black SUVs had crashed through the front gates. Dozens of heavily armed men in black tactical gear were pouring onto the lawn, taking cover behind the marble fountains.
The Bratva had come to wage war.
“Helen!” Luca yelled over the blaring alarm. “Take Lily to the panic room! Now!”
“Daddy, I’m scared!” Lily cried, burying her face in Helen’s shoulder.
“I’ve got you, baby,” Helen said, scooping the twelve-year-old up with surprising strength and running toward the library.
The massive oak front doors suddenly shuddered under a heavy impact.
BOOM.
They were using a battering ram.
Luca grabbed a heavy mahogany side table and shoved it against the doors, barricading them. He turned to me, his chest heaving.
“Hannah, go with them,” Luca ordered, pushing me toward the hallway.
“No!” I shouted, planting my feet. “I’m not leaving you to fight them alone!”
“There are thirty men out there, Hannah! They’re not here to talk! They’re here to burn this house to the ground!”
BOOM. The wood of the front doors began to splinter.
“Then we fight!” I yelled back, raising the handgun. “You saved my life ten years ago, Luca! I am not letting you die today!”
Luca stared at me, the fierce, undeniable love in his eyes shining through the panic. He grabbed my face in both hands and kissed me hard, a desperate, breathless promise.
“If we survive this,” Luca swore against my lips, “I am marrying you tomorrow.”
“Deal,” I whispered.
The front doors finally gave way, exploding inward in a shower of wood splinters and broken hinges.
Three Bratva soldiers rushed into the foyer, assault rifles raised.
Luca didn't flinch. He stepped out from cover and fired his shotgun, sending the first two men crashing to the marble floor.
I raised my handgun, my hands shaking, and fired at the third man. The bullet caught him in the leg. He went down with a scream.
“Move!” Luca yelled, grabbing my hand and pulling me behind the sweeping grand staircase.
Bullets chewed through the drywall, shattering vases and destroying the beautiful crystal chandeliers above us. The noise was deafening. Glass rained down like deadly snow.
“We can't hold them off forever!” I shouted over the gunfire. “We need help!”
Luca pulled his cell phone from his pocket. The screen was cracked, but he hit a single speed-dial button.
He held it to his ear.
“Vincenzo,” Luca yelled into the phone. “They’re here. We need the cavalry.”
I stared at him in shock. “You called my father? He’s in federal custody!”
Luca offered a grim smile. “Not anymore. I made a deal with the FBI yesterday. Full immunity for your father, in exchange for drawing the Bratva out of hiding.”
Suddenly, a massive explosion shook the ground outside.
The gunfire in the foyer abruptly stopped.
I peeked around the edge of the staircase.
Through the shattered front doors, I saw the sky outside light up with flashing red and blue lights. Dozens of armored FBI SWAT vehicles had just surrounded the Bratva SUVs.
And standing at the front of the tactical line, holding a megaphone, was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark suit.
My father.
“Drop your weapons!” Vincenzo Romano’s voice boomed over the megaphone. “You are completely surrounded!”
The Bratva soldiers looked at each other in panic. They realized they had walked directly into a trap.
One by one, the men outside dropped their rifles and raised their hands.
The siege was over almost as quickly as it had begun.
Luca slumped against the wall, sliding down to the floor, completely exhausted. He dropped the shotgun and let out a long, shuddering breath.
I dropped to my knees beside him, throwing my arms around his neck.
“You did it,” I cried, kissing his soot-covered cheek. “You actually did it.”
“We did it,” Luca corrected, pulling me onto his lap and holding me tightly.
But as the FBI swarmed the house to secure the perimeter, a lone figure stepped through the ruined front doors.
It was Nikolai. He had crawled up from the basement. He held his silenced pistol, his face twisted in pure, hateful agony.
He aimed the gun directly at the back of Luca’s head.
“For the Pakhan,” Nikolai wheezed.
I saw the glint of the metal over Luca’s shoulder.
I didn't have time to scream. I didn't have time to raise my gun.
But I didn't need to.
A sharp, metallic whack echoed in the foyer.
Nikolai’s eyes rolled into the back of his head, and he collapsed onto the marble floor.
Standing behind him, holding a heavy, antique bronze candlestick, was Helen Bellini.
